Would it be strange to *seriously* name a baby after a video game/movie character?

The name is [name_m]Lukas[/name_m], so I don’t think it would be tied to this particular thing, per say.

  • Unusual, to say the least…
  • Not weird at all
  • Not something I would personally do but I don’t see why not

I wouldn’t do it, if you only liked the name because of a character.
Characters we love come and go. There have been times where I loved a name because I was currently very obsessed with a character, and then years later while I still think the name is nice, I’m over that character so I don’t care much about the game/show.
It’s different when the game/show introduces you to the name, and you start loving the name because you now see it in a different light, and not because of your attachment to the character. For example, I’ve had [name_m]Angus[/name_m] in my UC for 3-4 years, because I really liked a character called [name_m]Angus[/name_m]. I still like the character but I don’t care about him much. However, the character changed the image of the name, and made me rediscover it aside of the character’s personality and role in the game.

if you only like the name because of the video game/movie, I’d say no. but that may be a little hypocritical, considering I have many a book character name in my UC. another point to consider is how tightly it’s tied to the video game or movie. [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] is pretty common, so I don’t think it should be a problem if you did use it.

Taking inspiration from a video game/movie is totally fine!! As other people have posted, [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] is a fairly common name (I know a few) so it wouldn’t stand out as video-gamey at all!

I don’t think it’s strange. Lots of people are inspired by the names in books, movies, TV, games, music etc. Think of how popular [name_f]Bella[/name_f] became after Twilight came out.

Lukas is already a fairly common name which makes it doubly fine in my book.

I think it would depend on how unique the name is. [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] I wouldn’t assume was after a character, and seems fine. But something like [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] would stand out more.

Also, I would do lots of research on the author/creator/character before naming a child after them, because I wouldn’t want to name my child something and later discover the creator/character/author wasn’t a great person.

So long as you love the name beyond the character, I don’t think it’s weird. [name_m]Lukas[/name_m] is common enough that I don’t think it’s too tied to one character

It’s not weird at all, and people do it all the time. However, I would aim more towards characters whose “arcs” have ended just in case of anything problematic that might happen. We all know how the [name_f]Daenerys[/name_f] situation turned out in the end…

Its definitely not weird.
I only think it might be weird if the name is extremely unique and everyone knows that name by association from a famous character, etc.

That being said, my partner and I have a girl name picked based off of a TV show. He suggested it years ago, and although I wasn’t into the name right away, I really do like it. The name was specifically made for the TV show, therefore a modern invention name, but we’re going to use a more formal full name, and use the characters name as a nn.

People do it all the time, and considering the name in question, it wouldn’t be strange at all.

My son’s middle name is [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m]. We got the idea from a character on [name_f]Star[/name_f] Gate [name_u]Atlantis[/name_u] - he’s not technically named after this character, but the show made us love the name and we have no regrets.
