Hey berries! I have recently fallen in love with the name [name]Hypatia[/name] (for historical reasons–mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, AMAZING WOMAN)…however, what do you think the reception of the name would be? Would people have difficulty pronouncing [name]Hypatia[/name] (hi-PAY-sha)? What do you think of [name]Hypatia[/name]? Middle name suggestions? Thanks!
I would pronounce it hi-PAY-sha. I have never heard this name on an “actual” person, but I do like it.
Dude, yes, [name]Hypatia[/name]! I love [name]Hypatia[/name]! I also once met a [name]Hypatia[/name] (played tennis against her in high school - I don’t remember the names of, like, any other opponents, but I remember hers), and my reception of the name was incredibly enthusiastic (though privately enthusiastic).
It’s possible that people who are reading the name may have to be told how to pronounce it, though it does seem reasonably intuitive to me? I think I’m too biased to make a fair assessment, though. People would probably need it spelled for them also, but as someone who’s always needed to spell their name for others, I don’t really find it that much of an inconvenience, and I feel the name [name]Hypatia[/name] is worth any trouble on that front.
Right now my combo is [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]. Some other ideas (I seem to like it with shorter names):
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Wren[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Opal[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Lark[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]June[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Dawn[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Eve[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Sage[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Estelle[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Naomi[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Noemi[/name]
[name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Olive[/name]
I’ve never heard this name before, but its really cute and interesting. I think some people might not be able to pronounce it, sadly, but I think if you look at it closely for a sec they could get the pronunciation. Good luck!!
I am happy to see your “enthusiastic” response ! Ouu I love [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Violet[/name]!!! And [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Eve[/name] and [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Ruth[/name]! Thanks! And even in your signature [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] would be stunning!
I’ve never heard of the name before but before I saw the pronunciation I had a go and I did pronounce is right first time. But I think other people may have difficulty pronouncing it.
Thanks for your reply, I am starting to think this could be a usable name, so far you can all pronounce it and even then I have had so many people pronounce my name wrong… and it has never been a big deal to me. And what about nicknames? Would Pacie work ? I think that would be a cute nickname
The pronunciation seemly fairly intuitive to me, I don’t think it would be too much of a problem for most people. I’d be excited to meet a little [name]Hypatia[/name]! It has a great namesake. Maybe Hyp (prn like hype) for a nickname? Hyper? [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Violet[/name] is gorgeous.
I think for the most part people will be able to get the pronunciation! Some won’t, but it’s not any different than any other name, really. I’m not really a fan of the way [name]Hypatia[/name] sounds, but I think it would be such a fun name to hear! [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Violet[/name] gets my vote
I’ll be the odd person out and say I struggled to pronounce this one. I have never heard the name before (or of the historical figure), but it doesn’t seem any more complicated than other names uncommon in the English language. For me using this name would depend a lot on your last name. I have a first and last name where I have to spell both [name]EVERY[/name]. SINGLE. TIME. and it drives me absolutely crazy. So if you have a difficult or complicated last name I’d skip this one or find an easy to spell nickname just in case she felt like she wanted it.
My first thought was hip-pat-tia but on examining it I would think hip-pay-sha
I think [name]Hypatia[/name] is lovely. It was on my list for a long time when I first got into the whole name thing. I think [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Hypatia[/name] [name]Lily[/name] were both on my list.
