We live in NC and keep running into little girls named [name]Carolina[/name]. I like the name [name]Carolina[/name], but I would not use it specifically b.c we live here. So I wondered what other folks thought about this. Would you name your daughter [name]Dakota[/name] if you lived in ND? Or [name]Paris[/name] if you lived in [name]Paris[/name]?
I moved around a lot when I was little. The first place I remember living is a fairly common boy’s name, and after leaving all I wanted to do was go back. It’s a place that has a lot of meaning to me, for various reasons, and I have considered using it as a name. I probably won’t, but it has crossed my mind.
I have met a few girls named [name]Brooklyn[/name] in [name]Brooklyn[/name]! Now I live in [name]Jersey[/name] and I haven’t met one of those yet…but I’m sure they’re out there! I like some place names with special meaning to me, but mostly place names work for me cause they stir up a feeling of nostalgia. I wouldn’t use the place that I live cause I have no nostalgia for where I currently am…at least not yet.
I have heard children called the names of streets so near where they live as well, which is odd to me. I also recently realized that a boy I know named [name]Lincoln[/name] goes to a school by that name! I also recently heard of someone I know having a niece named [name]Albany[/name].
I named my daughter [name]Louisianna[/name], an old name with family and dear friend references but of course almost a wonderful state’s name and a [name]Randy[/name] [name]Newman[/name] song I [name]LOVE[/name] about that state! so yes! I think with other writers that the place name should have meaning for you, but that said there are some beautiful ones ~ try this poem for a few!
“I have fallen in love with American names, the sharp names that never get fat.” - [name]Stephen[/name] [name]Vincent[/name] [name]Benet[/name]
Nope, never. Generally, I just don’t think that this trend of place names haven’t reached Denmark (yet). Some acquaintances of mine had an [name]India[/name] a couple of years ago, but I think that’s the only place name that has managed to somewhat break through here. Besides, Danish place names would never work (Middlefart, anyone?) I live on Amager which is an island within our capital, Copenhagen, and I don’t think that either Copenhagen (little Copie? Haggie? [name]Penny[/name]?) or Amager would do well on tiny humans.
The city I was raised in is pronounced exactly like the name [name]Nina[/name]. I think it’s pretty, but I’m not sure if I would use it.
[name]Alabama[/name] is a very, very guilty pleasure. I (and my son/daughter) would have to be the Shooter [name]Jennings[/name] type to pull it off though.
Nope, would never do it, but I never lived in a pretty sounding state ([name]Missouri[/name], Wisconsin, Minnesota)
Also, I’m not a fan of place names, I do come close though since I love the name [name]Caroline[/name] ([name]Carolina[/name]) and like the name [name]Georgina[/name] ([name]Georgia[/name])
As for cities, it really depends, I don’t like using names of major cities, but there are cities named [name]Victoria[/name] and [name]Eugene[/name] (and so on), which I think are totally fine, as long as I don’t live there!
Not the city or state I lived in, though the risk is they you or they move to that place at a later date…
I guess it depends. I like the name Stockton, but I don’t live there. I’m not too partial to place names.
No, and I would hesitate to use even a city in my state that I don’t live in which is unfortunate because I really like the name [name]Everett[/name]. [name]Pierce[/name] is another casualty for me…not a city but the county I live in.
Generally, no. But I was born in the city [name]Olympia[/name], and my mom and grandmother were both raised there, and I’ve considered using [name]Olympia[/name] as a middle name for a girl since it has such special meaning. But that’s only as a middle name, and I’d only use it if I wasn’t living in the same state.
I considered the names [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Callie[/name] or [name]Calla[/name] for our 2nd daughter. In a way, it was to honor the fact that my SO and I are from long lines of native Californians. Mine being long-time Angelenos and his family having resided in San [name]Francisco[/name] for the better part of a century.
In the end they just weren’t the right fit. But i’m all about honoring family in any creative way possible, and that includes the places where they come from, or have lived for a long time.
I unfortunately decided that I couldn’t. Goodbye, sweet [name]Virginia[/name], from my list.
Nope. Absolutely not.
I suppose I can make some concessions for people who live in towns that are named for a person and is a common first name. For example, if it’s been your dream since childhood to name your child [name]Virginia[/name] after your dear grandmother, and you just happen to live in the state of [name]Virginia[/name] when you have a daughter—well, then I could excuse it.
But honestly, it’s rather low class to me to name your kid [name]Dallas[/name] or something just because you live in and like the city of [name]Dallas[/name]. People need to get out more.
I have lived in many places that are “name friendly”: [name]Rome[/name], [name]Atlanta[/name], [name]Savannah[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Carolina[/name], [name]Georgia[/name], [name]Dallas[/name], [name]Austin[/name], Beaumont, [name]Katy[/name], [name]Aberdeen[/name], [name]Paris[/name], [name]London[/name], [name]Houston[/name] (I move around… A LOT)… and while all of the places sound nice as names, I don’t think that I would name a child a place name that I thought that he or she would be living in, on purpose. However, I have thought about using several of the above names as middle or second middle names for sentimental reasons. I actually think it would be funny to say, "I am [name]Savannah[/name], from [name]Savannah[/name]… " So I wouldn’t necessarily not do it either. [name]Just[/name] go with what you like. There is no guarantee [name]Carolina[/name] will always be in [name]Carolina[/name]…
Interesting question. I live in Adelaide and, no, I wouldn’t name my baby girl Adelaide, even though I think it’s a lovely name. However, my original home state is Victoria, which I would use! I think place names are okay, but not really if you live in that particular place (although I have a cousin named Alyce Victoria and she lives in Victoria). One of my favourite names is Elizabeth, but we live near a town named Elizabeth, which is not a very (how shall I say) socially viable town. My husband says no way to the name Elizabeth because, for him, it’s too associated with the town!
I briefly considered [name]Tennessee[/name] for a future little boy because my SO was born there. He nixed that idea. There are some names on my list that also happen to be place names, but we aren’t associated with those places.
Haha, no, lol. Neither Liverpool nor Merseyside could ever be considered people names.
You don’t think? Hmm…
I’ve lived in so many different places. Most of them are big no’s because the names aren’t nice on people ([name]London[/name], [name]Kensington[/name], Islington, Shoreditch, Stabekk, [name]Lyon[/name], Marseille, [name]Milano[/name], [name]Oxford[/name]), or because they’re a tad tacky ([name]Paris[/name], [name]Chelsea[/name]), or just not my style ([name]Angel[/name]). [name]Primrose[/name] and [name]Florence[/name] are nice though, but I probably wouldn’t use them on my children.
