Would you shorten Gillian? And how would you shorten it?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering if you would shorten the name [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]:
(A) In conversation, to [name_f]Jill[/name_f]
(B) In writing to [name_f]Jill[/name_f]
(C) In writing to [name_u]Gill[/name_u] (which I don’t like)
(D) Not at all
And if so, how frequently?
I like [name_f]Jill[/name_f] as a nickname, but not written [name_u]Gill[/name_u], which I fear could be the case with [name_f]Gillian[/name_f], so I just wanted your input on this. Thank you!

I have known one [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] who always went by the full name & one [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] who went by either the full name or [name_f]Gigi[/name_f].

I know a few Gillians, one I’m not sure if it’s ever shortened, and the other is shortened to “Jill” in conversation but I’m not sure if/how it’s shortened on paper ever. When she writes her name she writes “Gillian”, but friends/family could shortened it over text for example and I wouldn’t know

Thank you!

I would shorten [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] to [name_f]Jill[/name_f] frequently in both conversation and writing. I’m fond of nicknames but dislike [name_u]Gill[/name_u] as it could be mistaken for the fish gills pronunciation. [name_u]Nick[/name_u] names don’t have to be spelled exactly like the full name (Catherine to [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_u]Michael[/name_u] to [name_m]Mike[/name_m], etc.) so [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] nn [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is totally fine.

I’ve known several girls named [name_f]Jillian[/name_f], three of whom have been [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. The one who wasn’t I never called [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. If I was a close family member or friend, then I’d likely call her [name_u]Gill[/name_u] (in writing, but spoken the same as Jill), unless she had another nickname or one she preferred.

I knew one [name_f]Gillian[/name_f], but she never shortened it, in writing or in conversation.

If the name was spelled [name_f]Gillian[/name_f], I’d probably spell the nickname Gill/Gilly :person_shrugging: pronounced the same, but it would make more sense to me to spell it that way. I do like [name_f]Jill[/name_f] better though

Yes. I would shorten it and [name_u]Gilly[/name_u] / [name_f]Jilly[/name_f] comes intuitive for me.

I know about five Gills, all short for [name_f]Gillian[/name_f], all pn the same as [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. Gilly/Jilly is also nice and I love that you get the option of [name_m]Gee[/name_m] or [name_f]Gigi[/name_f] with [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]!

Nicknames are often not written down, so I think [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] nn [name_f]Jill[/name_f] (any spelling) is fine!

I know a [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] who is shorted to [name_u]Gill[/name_u]. If people are going to shorten the name, in writing they will shorten it to its appropriate short form dependent on spelling ie [name_f]Jill[/name_f] short for [name_f]Jillian[/name_f] and [name_u]Gill[/name_u] short for [name_f]Gillian[/name_f]. It’s completely counter-intuitive imo to switch to a different initial letter for the shortened form and I can’t see it ever happening.
