Would you spell it Tali or Tally?

Hi, everyone. I’m actually making this topic about myself. My nickname has always been Tally since I was a little girl (my name was just too common and I never really liked using it so I just decided to make up a nickname and today I’d rather be called Tally/Tali than Thais which is my birth name), but now that I’m moving to an English speaking country, I was told by someone that the Tally spelling might not be my best option to use and I don’t know how true that is in general.

I thought a place where people discuss names should be the best place to ask, would you think Tally is weird if you came across it or wouldn’t even think twice? I’m fond of the Tali spelling too and also use it sometimes but I’d like to know for sure.

TIA

i think i’d naturally spell it Tali if i heard it said aloud. but honestly, either spelling would be fine. if you went with Tally, you could always say “spelled like Sally with a T” and people would get it

I wouldn’t think twice of it, but I like the look of [name_u]Tali[/name_u] better

I wouldn’t think either is weird, if I heard them. However I do say them differently. [name_u]Tali[/name_u] as Tah-lee (with a long a) and [name_u]Tally[/name_u] as Ta-lee (with a short a).

Agreeing with the Brits here that I’d pronounce [name_u]Tally[/name_u] and [name_u]Tali[/name_u] differently. Maybe you could try out both spellings when you get to know a few people in your new location. Would they be pronounced differently, would one spelling be viewed as preferable to the other due to some kind of cultural association?
If you’re comfortable saying where you are moving to, there may be some Berries who live there that could help.

I really wouldn’t think twice if I saw [name_u]Tally[/name_u], but I like [name_u]Tali[/name_u] more. Instinctively I would pronounce them differently (Tally like the word, and [name_u]Tali[/name_u] as tar-lee) but this is easily corrected if needs be.

Thank you! I hadn’t thought about that, they’re both said the same where I’m from and sometimes I forget how different things can sound in other languages lol I’m moving to [name_f]Canada[/name_f] if it helps at all. Thank you very much!

I’m in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]. I don’t think it matters but [name_u]Tali[/name_u] is more common here.

I definitely don’t think [name_u]Tally[/name_u] is weird, nor would I if I just heard it somewhere randomly! I’ve always thought it’d be a cute nickname! I like the [name_u]Tally[/name_u] and [name_u]Tallie[/name_u] spellings best, but [name_u]Tali[/name_u] is cute too! :two_hearts:

I would say [name_u]Tali[/name_u] would probably make more sense in [name_f]English[/name_f]. [name_u]Tally[/name_u] would be pronounced like the phrase “tally the votes”, while [name_u]Tali[/name_u] would be pronounced more like it normally is as a nickname for Talita (not that Talita is a common name here, but as an example).

Are you Brazilian? I only know Brazilians with the name [name_f]Thais[/name_f]!

Thank you!

Thank you!!

More like the name [name_f]Talia[/name_f], would you say? Thank you very much!

And yes, I am!! It’s funny to think it’s not a Portuguese name at all and yet there are so many Brazilians with it. I used to go to school with NINE others in the same class as me lol

I wonder how you’d say [name_f]Talli[/name_f]? More like [name_u]Tali[/name_u] or [name_u]Tally[/name_u]? I never considered the different pronunciations so now I’m curious.

[name_u]Tali[/name_u] was my first instinct, but I don’t think it really matters. I would go with whatever you love!

[name_u]Tali[/name_u]

Depends on the pronunciation- if it rhymes with [name_f]Sally[/name_f], my preferred spelling would be [name_u]Tallie[/name_u] (or Tally). If it rhymes with [name_f]Molly[/name_f], I think [name_u]Tali[/name_u] would be more intuitive.
