Writers' Quick Poll Thread

I have a fairly important secondary character (one of the main characters’ childhood best friend/older brother figure) who completely vanished almost ten years ago. Do I need to figure out what happened to him? Should the characters figure out what happened to him? I need help.

  • I need to know what happened but the characters shouldn’t figure it out
  • I need to know what happened and the characters should figure it out
  • I don’t need to know what happened

[name_m]Austin[/name_m] totally fits this vibe. I think it goes with more a quiet personality.

One of my characters was named [name_f]Destiny[/name_f]. I switched between [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] and [name_f]Hope[/name_f] for a while, finally landing on [name_f]Hope[/name_f]. While I love the nicknames for [name_f]Destiny[/name_f], (Des, D) it simply didn’t fit the character. To me it gives off more clunky, vintage vibes. This did not fit my quiet, empathetic character. Is it possible you could give us more of a description on her? <3

I would only reveal so much–bit by bit. It also depends on the MC. If they had such a special connection that his backstory would kind of takeaway from the whole average-high school feel, then I wouldn’t reveal his past. I think this is so cool that you’re doing this with your siblings! I really hope this helps!

Oh the disappearance is a different story, sorry I should have mentioned that! This is definitely not average high school, this is angsty frost mage gets arrested a lot and falls in love with a badass noblewoman with a sword. Thank you so much for your help with the other story too! I like the nickname Des a lot–I might could get behind that if my sibling’s really set on it, which is super helpful for both my own snobby peace of mind and our sibling relations in general lol.

How would you spell Annabelle/Annabel? This is for a hard-core, no nonsense overprotective girl.

That makes so much more sense

Honestly, that’s the only reason I stuck with [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] for a little haha. I think the nickname is super cute!!

If a girl named Annie interview four boys who are named Danny (ENTP), Jon (ESFP), Lawrence (INTP) and Gordon (ENFJ), and she is spend the entire day with each of them and learning a lot more and new about them, all three of them did a good job with her and they give her a good time and they acted like what she have in mind but except for one, who has acted completely different than what he perceived to be, he’s going to turn this interview around to test her abilities as an interviewer to see if she can handle it while turning the questions on her to get learn something about her, He’s intelligent and likes to have real conversations instead of phony ones and is also nobody’s dummy or fool, he gives her advice about how things are more than what they are and they are layers to them not believing what they initially assumed to be, she apologized for how she’s come off in the interview and he accepted her apology and he told her why he act he did is because to give her a boost and so after all that, they have lots of fun and it turns out they have a lot in common, she says goodbye to him and he gives a big bear hug and says to her that she was his favorite interviewer and he will never forget about her to she makes her feel proud, the two become friends and still keep in contact with each other, as she was saying goodbye to all of them she felt brand new and learned something new about the boys and new ones also, she can never that one member make a big impression/impact and still is till this very day, who would that be?

  • I do, but only on rare occasion.
  • I don’t, but I’m open to the possibility.

How to make a poll?
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you have to be a member or something?

When you open a reply box, you can see a little gear icon in the far-right corner at the top of the screen. When you click on that, it’ll present you with four options: insert table, hide details, build poll, and blur spoiler. Obviously, you’ll want to click the “build poll” option, and then you’ll be presented with multiple buttons that’ll let you adjust your poll to your liking.

In case my explanation is confusing, here’s a step-by-step visual instruction posted to the Nameberry guidelines:

I don’t believe you have to be a member in order to build polls, but then again, it was quite a while ago when I was brand new to Nameberry and my memory has faded a bit.

I have hereditary magic in my story, but the main character has magic and her older twin sister doesn’t. How should I make this work?

  • The magic only goes to the second daughter
  • The older sister does have magic, but so minor she doesn’t notice
  • Other option (@ me if you think of one)

I need a name for my villainess in a story. She is a cruel and sadistic woman, (allegedly) immortal, and seeks out people with elemental powers to serve as spies/assassins/agents on her behalf. She torments and brainwashes them into serving her and is not willing to let them go free, so she is furious when my MC escapes from her.

What should her name be?
  • Syntyche
  • Athanasia
  • Amaranta
  • Meliora
  • Leta
  • Velia

I’ve two Native American characters of mixed Sioux, Cherokee and Quapaw descent living in 21st century Arkansas. They are brother and sister, named Dakota (in honor of his mother’s heritage) and Maya. See, their mother, Robin, is a South Dakota native of Sioux descent and their father, Ned, is of majority Cherokee and Quapaw descent, with an emphasis on Cherokee. I have a bit of a rule when naming characters, and that is for their name to reflect their ancestry. Unfortunately, I cannot find a Cherokee surname suitable for this family, who are currently surnamed Redhorse. The vast majority of authentic native surnames I’ve researched are of Navajo origin, which is not an ancestry I intend on giving them. I’m aware that the majority of Natives bear European surnames as a result of colonization, and I’m not opposed to using one for them if I feel it fits. Problem is, aside from Walker, I can’t find an European surname I like for them, and I don’t want to give up the search for Cherokee surnames either. What should I do?

For the record, I’m primarily looking for surnames that gel well with Dakota, as he’s the member of this family with the most importance.

  • Just stick with the surname Redhorse.
  • Keep up the search for Cherokee surnames.
  • Use a mainstream European surname.
  • Incorporate Navajo (and perhaps others) heritage to broaden your options.
  • I have another suggestion.
