Xo

Ok, so I have this list of baby names that I put aside in 2018. I’m really not sure how I found this or came up with this, but one of my names is Xo - pronounced like Zoey.

I also spelled it like Xö - with the umlauted vowel. I believe that I thought this would give the o an -ee sound, but in my research just now, it’s actually an -ay sound.

Anyway, I like unusual names, but I don’t like names that will constantly be mispronounced. So… Thoughts??

I think Xo is pretty, but would 100% pronounce it Zow (rhymes with [name_m]Joe[/name_m]). It’s used as a nickname for [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f] on [name_f]Jane[/name_f] The Virgin, with is the only place I’ve seen it. You wouldn’t be able to convince people into adding the extra syllable, I reckon.

Xo is sooo pretty but unfortunately I think people would pronounce it “[name_m]Zo[/name_m]” or even “Exo” :sob:

I looked at this name and pronounced it X O like the Beyoncé song. I would not think the name is pronounced [name_f]Zoey[/name_f].

I agree with previous posters that it would definitely wouldn’t be pronounced properly! I first read it as ‘Zow’ but can see how people might just pronounce it ‘Exo’

Xo looks so nice, but it wouldn’t be pronounced properly. I first read it as xo, (like xoxo) and also Zow and Exo. It’s really pretty, but people might have difficulty with the pronounciation.

I agree with others. It will definitely be mispronounced.

Yeah, I would never have got [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] from Xo – sorry! I would say [name_m]Zo[/name_m], rhymes with “so”.

O umlaut usually makes an “uehhh” sound (in [name_m]German[/name_m] and Nordic languages), it’s actually really hard to describe! I don’t know of any languages that use o umlaut to give an “ay” sound

I would think first of “xoxo.”

I also would assume it was prounced [name_m]Zo[/name_m].

That’s actually what I love most about it!

It looks incomplete to me. It looks like only initials instead of a real name. Maybe with an e on end, or ey?

[name_m]Even[/name_m] after you said it’s pronounced [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] I cannot read it that way, I only see Zow.
[name_f]Xoe[/name_f] could work or Xoë if you want the umlaut

Thats going to be frustrating all her life. I think its a really cool name, but I agree with @Eirime, add an e to make it easier

I love unusual and unique names too. A met a baby boy named Vox and that has stuck with me.

Vox is unique but it makes sense linguistically, it is a Latin word that is pretty recognizable in most Western countries. You’d sound like a fascist in Spain for sure though.
