Your made-up places. šŸƒ

Many of my stories are set in real countries, but a handful of them are set in made up places.
For those of you who have made up a country, land, kingdom, etc…, what are they called? What are they like? What are their histories? Where did you get the inspiration from?

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite made up country (I created it at 12yrs old) was called Alluria (Uh-loo-ree-uh).
It was a large island near [name_f]Madeira[/name_f], that was part of [name_u]France[/name_u] but not well known to the Majority of people. It was ruled by an evil old [name_f]Queen[/name_f] named [name_f]Nya[/name_f].
I can’t remember how I came up with the name though.
I’ll add some other places I created a little later, but right now I’m curious and excited to hear what you creative people have done!

I haven’t written any fantasy in quite a while, but when I was younger, I had a massive, magical story that mostly took place in a town I named Ottery St. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I still love that name! It’s a riverside town full of cobblestone streets, wonky buildings, and a tight-knit community of zany wizards and witches. I remember writing about a flower shoppe on one of the windy avenues, and one of my MCs lived in a cobblestone cottage two uneven stories high. I love Ottery St. [name_f]Mary[/name_f]!

Ottery St. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] sounds adorable and charming!

The only places I’ve come up with have been for D&D characters, but…

Violetvale was inspired by [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables. If anyone can come up with a creative place name, it’s [name_u]Anne[/name_u] [name_u]Shirley[/name_u]. I think she had a designated place for imaginary fairies called [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Vale[/name_u] or something, and I thought it’d make a nice name for the idyllic village of my character’s adopted parents.

Finknottle was inspired by an old BBC show with [name_m]Hugh[/name_m] [name_u]Laurie[/name_u] and [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] Fry called Jeeves & Wooster. There’s a geeky bespectacled character named Mr. Finknottle, who someone calls a butterfly as an insult, and my character belongs to a family of butterfly farmers (which apparently is a real thing).

[name_u]Lake[/name_u] Winnipesaukee is a real lake, made more famous by the movie ā€œWhat About Bob?ā€ I wanted a memorable place name that could easily be associated with The Great Lakes area (even though it’s in [name_u]New[/name_u] Hampshire).

I’m now realizing that I rarely come up with my own original place names. I usually borrow it from somewhere obscure that sounds right.

[name_u]Hazelbrook[/name_u] is the name of the country I’m planning a story in. The royal family live in Hazelhurst Manor.

I wrote a short story about a girl and her friends who solved mysteries and the neighborhood they lived in was [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] Falls.

I have a couple of children’s stories set in a kingdom called [name_f]Merewen[/name_f]. There isn’t much history since I am terrible with details

Here are some other places I made-

Eagin -

A place hidden from the rest of the world because it’s surrounded by giant snowy mountains. The place is a beautiful, naturey home to talking animals, a handful of children who protect them, and their leader, an old man named Moff Engle.

Zhia-

A [name_m]Kingdom[/name_m] in one of my favourite stories. It’s divided into the [name_u]North[/name_u], [name_u]South[/name_u], [name_u]West[/name_u], & [name_u]East[/name_u] regions, ruled by four different royal families. [name_u]An[/name_u] assassin has been killing off the royal families one by one, causing the regions to fight against each other and cause absolute chaos.
The survivors with royal blood escape to the [name_u]North[/name_u] region, where the assassin has not yet been. They are protected by [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] and his army, till they realise that the assassin has been hiding amongst them all that time. The assassin (Later discovered to be [name_f]Lady[/name_f] Agdavene, sister in law to the [name_m]King[/name_m] himself) is after something which the royal family have been hiding. She’s trying to find it, so [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Merrick[/name_m] helps his nephew and niece escape, giving the item with them to hide.
(Agdavene ends up getting the item at the end of the book, so it’s not a happily-ever-after story!)

One of my stories takes place in Talebook, which is just a fantasy world, with fairy tale characters.

I have made two worlds so far. One for a fantasy book and the other for an OC I use in role-play on Instagram.

The [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms
The [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms, also called Azarhelm, is a world I made that is entirely made up of flames and fire. Similar to Hell/Underworld but the [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms are constantly up in flames and the flames can never go out. Unlike Hell/Underworld, the [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms house families that have descended from species that are related to fire. The main family that rules in this world and is the oldest family alive within the [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms is the [name_f]Azar[/name_f] family. Azarhelm, later named The [name_u]Fire[/name_u] Realms, was named after the [name_f]Azar[/name_f] family and the [name_f]Azar[/name_f] family rules over the realm.

Jaz’Goth
Jaz’Goth is a world that I created for the main character of a book I’m currently working towards right now. Jaz’Goth is similar to Hell/Underworld in many many ways. Like Hell/Underworld, it houses demonic creatures. While it doesn’t house normal demons like succubi, incubi, etc. it instead houses demons that are called Gothorians, Ardordemons, Anmons, Demonlocks and many other species. Gothorians are the native species of demons in the world of Jaz’Goth. Many different half-demon hybrids reside in Jaz’Goth. Jaz’Goth is ruled by my MC’s father, [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Ravan[/name_m] who is a Greater Gothorian [name_m]Demon[/name_m].

When I was 12 I created a fictional country named [name_m]Costa[/name_m] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]! The main character named [name_f]Luna[/name_f] was prophesied to save the country, and ofc had a moon birthmark on her forehead ;p

I made a little world called Tine (TEE-nah). It wasn’t ā€˜set’ in any particular time period, but rather it was a combination of multiple (ex. everything kinda looked colonial/medieval, but people dressed in clothes from medieval to modern). It had a land in the grasslands and on the edge of the forest run by a King with normal people, a hidden land in the grasslands/prairie run by a wizard named Orion with magical beings, and a really hidden land in the mountains run by the villain Jasper with his minions. There was also a series of caves that the main characters had a base in. I have a map of the land if anyone would like to see

I’m afraid my places don’t have cool names
[name_f]My[/name_f] main universe features The Magical World, a worldwide society of ~100000 people hidden in plain sight. It’s largely dependent on portals. It’s also kind of totalitarian, for example there’s only one school, The Academy (you can guess why nothing has a name - you don’t need one if there’s only one of each). [name_f]My[/name_f] stories are mostly set at The Academy, and it’s probably my favourite place I made up. It is hidden from the view of non-mages high in the mountains and can only be reached by portals. There’s a round yard at the center, with six huge towers placed evenly around it, each housing the department for one house of magic (Destruction, Healing, Shapeshifting, Illusion, Necromancy and Construction of Artifacts). Each tower has classrooms on the floors above and housing below ground level, the lower buildings between them are for the library and the teachers’ offices. Everything is built to be able to exist in hiding, most rooms have fake-windows with fake-daylight.
