Your naming trend predictions ✨

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries! Curious on what naming trends you predict to become popular in the next couple of years… AND what is a trend you personally would love to see take off? :eyes:

Lots of word names, Gaelic names and names from mythology. Of course, my input is based off of Nameberry data, and not actual births. Old-time classics may contrast with weird sci-fi, but my names rarely fit in either so it’s not something I would mind.

I personally don’t want Gaelic names and names from mythology to trend because they comprise more than half of my list :joy: I’ll be ruined.

All my favourite names are trending right now and I don’t want to see any more of them on Top 100 list. I guess I can live with word names being popular, although nature word names are out of question.

Great post!

i definitely think a lot more names will go gender neutral for people, with a rise of the ‘liquid’ sounding names. -a ending names for boys and -o ending names for girls is another fun one !

• also i would love seeing names people find more brave (but love regardless) used in the middle name spot. of course ‘filler middles’ have their place but it’s super refreshing to see unexpected middles in announcements of non-namenerds

I agree that word names and gender neutral ones will likely become more popular.

I think that more old names will be dusted off thanks to the 100 Year [name_m]Rule[/name_m]. A good number have already made it on the charts, so I expect more will too. I think this may include reclaiming filler middles for the first name spot.

It’s hard to guess much beyond that since the real-life births I see, while not a great indicator of trends on the whole, people tend to either recycle the same names (Adalyn, [name_f]Ella[/name_f], etc) and occasionally choose something completely out of left field (Wells, Jimma on a girl, etc).

The biggest trends are and probably will be unisex names and nature names. I’m envisioning more ambiguous or even fem leaning names on boys (Wren and Florence come to mind?). I think names like River will get hot for both genders. Names like Meadow will probably become more mainstream. Additionally, I don’t think James will “go to the girls” like a lot of people worry about but after a few years of seeing it used by celebrities and being the hot new middle name for girls - I think we’ll be meeting more girls with James in the first spot. I think animal names will (continue) to boom - Wolf is on a lot of people’s minds and that may inspire more baby Foxes, Bears, Birdies, and Bees which were already trendy anyway.

Powerful names for girls are also a priority for a lot of people right now. I also think that parents are interested in spinning some more tragic heroines into power (think Ophelia, Pandora). Similarly, names from mythology can be seen as the best of a few different worlds so we may see more babies named Artemis, Jupiter (for boys or girls apparently!), and Athena.

Casual names and nickname names are so fun and I think they’ll be used more in the first spot. We’ve seen a lot of Augusts and I think we’ll be getting more and more "just Augie"s and Gus will continue to take off. Similarly Georgia → Georgie, Olivia or Oliver → Ollie (or Liv),

The 100 year rule will bring in a new crop of names. El names have been big so maybe we’ll move from Elsie/Hazel/etc. to Thelma, Helen/Nellie, Elaine, Ethel (though I still want to keep the clunky grandma names to myself). Grandpa names for boys will be too cute to handle - particularly envisioning lots of babies Otis, Wilbur, Franklin, Vincent, and Clyde.

I think we’ll be noticing lots of fun, bold middles - but that’s harder to quantify because they wouldn’t show up in the charts.

The trends I notice most are the ones used locally or in my circle… have noticed a lot more people considering soft nature names for boys [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_u]River[/name_u], [name_u]Asher[/name_u], [name_m]Forrest[/name_m], [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u], [name_m]Cliff[/name_m], [name_u]Cove[/name_u]. I suppose a lot of these cross into the word name trend people are mentioning above too!

For girls the choices I’ve seen have been a bit all ove the place! but can definitely see the 100 year rule in effect with a few vintage gems coming through (which I love to see!) as well as lots of nickname as first names think [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], [name_u]Frankie[/name_u], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]

Personally I would love to see a few more adventurous names come through in particular I love the god and goddesses names I see on nameberry in IRL!

I am also excited about more oldie Goldies being dusted off by a new generation! Was lovely meeting a little [name_m]Albert[/name_m] “Bertie” at the park the other day! Felt so fresh even compared to modern names and suited the cheeky little man down to the ground!
