I absolutely love the name [name_u]Rio[/name_u] for a boys name. Recently hubby has suggested [name_u]Rio[/name_u] for either a boy or girl. What are your thoughts? This baby is brother/sister to [name_m]Buddy[/name_m].
I think [name_u]Rio[/name_u] is a very sweet name and one of very few that I could actually picture on a boy or a girl.
As a child, there was a girl with the name in my class, except hers was spelt Rhio.
Having taken 3 years of Spanish, [name_u]Rio[/name_u] is nothing but a male name because in Spanish, rio is masculine (el rio).
I can’t see this name as a girls name because the “O” ending.
In Spanish the “O” ending stood for masculinity. So it’s just a boys name. And not even a human boys name in my mind anymore. I think of the bird movie, [name_u]Rio[/name_u]
I immediately think of a boy with [name_u]Rio[/name_u] because of the Spanish (and a male character from the [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and the Holograms cartoon). I think a girl could wear it well, too (it’s used as a metaphor by Duran Duran though it still has a feminine angle in their song Rio), but it reads “boy” to me. I love its offbeat nature and I think it pairs well with [name_m]Buddy[/name_m]. Great choice!
It definitely feels masculine to me, because of the O ending and similarity to [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. It’d be refreshing and different on a boy, both “fitting in and standing out”- the idea of place names are on-trend right now, but this particular one isn’t getting much attention. It goes well with [name_m]Buddy[/name_m]- laid-back but spunky.
I could see it working on either, I know the ‘o’ ending is masculine, but it also makes me think of that duran duran song ‘[name_u]Rio[/name_u]’ in which it is used as a female name.
I have never known a [name_u]Rio[/name_u], male or female - but did know a female [name_m]Reo[/name_m], so I can see it as a female name, but I think it works as a male name too.
It’s all male to me, I honestly wouldn’t give it to a girl, especially not anywhere with a large (or even largish) Spanish speaking population. I do think it pairs really well with [name_m]Buddy[/name_m] though and would be a great choice for a boy. What about [name_f]Ria[/name_f] for a girl? The meaning is almost the same (small river as opposed to river) and it is definitely feminine, in both English and Spanish and it also goes great with [name_m]Buddy[/name_m].
Never heard it before but [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it as a boys name!
Think it’s a bit harsh sounding for a girl
[name_u]Rio[/name_u]'s all boy to me. Cool name!
I’m not a fan of it as a name, but it feels masculine to me. I can’t see it on a girl.
I think [name_u]Rio[/name_u] is cute for a baby, kid, and teen, but I’m having a hard time seeing it on a working adult or grandpa. I do like the suggestion of [name_f]Ria[/name_f] for a girl though. I know a [name_f]Ria[/name_f] who is ~20 and with its similarity to popular [name_f]Mia[/name_f] and [name_f]Lea[/name_f], I think it’s on trend and can age well. Good luck in your decision!
I think [name_u]Rio[/name_u] is a boys name. I was shocked when [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] gave this name to his daughter, because I think it is firmly in the boys arena.
I second the association with the [name_m]Duran[/name_m] [name_m]Duran[/name_m] song, and the only [name_u]Rio[/name_u] I know is my mother’s chihuahua. Not a human name, imo.
