This is what is says for [name]ZOE[/name] at behindthename.com
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: English, Greek, Ancient Greek
OTHER SCRIPTS: Ζωη (Greek)
PRONOUNCED: [name]ZO[/name]-ee (English)
MEANING & [name]HISTORY[/name]:
Means “life” in Greek. From early times it was adopted by Hellenized Jews as a translation of [name]EVE[/name]. It was borne by two early [name]Christian[/name] saints, one martyred under emperor [name]Hadrian[/name], the other martyred under Diocletian. The name was common in the Byzantine Empire, being borne by a ruling empress of the 11th century. As an English name, [name]Zoe[/name] has only been in use since the 19th century. It has generally been more common among Eastern Christians (in various spellings).
[name]Zoe[/name] is pronounced zoh-ee.
i think it’s very pretty and cute. It’s a word in the Greek language so I always love sharing that with the [name]Zoe[/name]'s I know. they think it’s very cool that their name is a word and not just a name with a meaning in another language. (same with [name]Sophia[/name])
It’s feminine and pronounced “zo-ee”. It has a lot of spunk packed into three letters!
I’ve always pn it as zo-ee, and heard it used as a girls name, too. Recently, though, I’ve met 2 [name]Zoe[/name]'s pn just ‘zo’ (no ‘ee’). 1 male and 1 female. I thought it was strange and wanted to get some of your opinions. (Interestingly enough, the male has 4 siblings, including a sister named Tait. Which is all boy to me.) Thanks, ladies!
I actually know a [name]Zoe[/name] [zoh] and a [name]Zoe[/name] [zoh-ee]. I prefer it as a girl’s name, pronounced [zoh-ee]. But, there is a bit of modern spunk to a boy named [name]Zoe[/name] [zoh].
I would assume it’s a girl’s name as the two Zoes I know are both female. I pronounce it [name]Zo[/name]-ee.
Like [name]Zoey[/name]… Girl.
Zoh-ee. Although I’m partial to it with the French accent ([name]Zo[/name]é), and then I’m tempted to say zoh-ay, since the é usually indicates the ay sound, as in [name]Ren[/name]ée and Esmée. [name]Just[/name] “[name]ZO[/name]” doesn’t hold much appeal to me, and it reminds me of [name]Rachel[/name] [name]Zoe[/name] way too much.
When I was younger, and had only seen the name in books, I always pronounced it as Zoh, until my teacher corrected me, saying that it was Zoh-ee. I actually really, really like this name. It’s cute and nickname-less, both a good and bad thing, in my opinion. As for the gender question, it will always be a girl’s name to me
I pronounce zo-ee and it’s a female name in my view - given that all [name]Zoe[/name]'s I have met have all been girls. I also cannot picture the name on a little boy.
Of all names, this is one of the ones that I must say drives me crazy the msot. (sorry to any Zoes out there) By looking I never know if it should be zo-ee or zo. I generally go with zo-ee because I know a [name]Zoe[/name] who pronounces it that way. But really I wish people would just add an umlaut or spell it [name]Zoey[/name], so that it’s more obvious.
I only like it spelt [name]Zoe[/name]. Spelling it [name]Zoey[/name] is NMS at all.
Most of the Greek names that end in e have an -ee sound: [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Xanthe[/name], [name]Ione[/name], etc.
THis name has always been a girl name to me and pronounced zo-ee
it is quite popular when i’m from (nz) i mean not super popular but everyone sort of knows at least one zoe! all girl too. i found it funny that someone was asking how to pronounce it because of how well known it is round here, to me it would be like someone posting how do you pronounce [name]Harry[/name] and is it a girl or boy name! Reminds me how different names are where you live
I’ve always pn it ‘zoh-ee’, and knows girls. That’s why I asked the question!
To me, it’s totally a girls name and pn ‘zoh-ee’. Until I met the little boy with it I had never heard it pn ‘zoh’. Then I had heard of an actress that has a daughter with the name, pn ‘zoh’. I was surprised when I’d heard that. I was also very surprised that I know a boy with it, too! I know of probably 3 or 4 people with the name (1 spelled [name]Zoie[/name]), so it’s pretty popular where I’m from, too. I know of the spellings [name]Zoey[/name] and [name]Zoie[/name], but the only spelling I really like is [name]Zoe[/name].
