17 Kids and Counting

I don’t know if this really qualifies as a “starbaby” but does anybody else ever watch the TLC show 17 kids and counting? They just had their new baby and named it [name]Jordyn[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] Makiya. All of their kiddo’s names start with J - how hard to think of 18 really great names that start with the same letter! I think there are some good ones sprinkled throughout. The other kids are: [name]Joshua[/name], [name]Jana[/name], [name]Jon[/name]-[name]David[/name], [name]Jill[/name], [name]Jessa[/name], [name]Jinger[/name], [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Joy[/name]-[name]Anna[/name], Jedidah & [name]Jeremiah[/name] (twins), [name]Jason[/name], [name]James[/name], [name]Justin[/name], [name]Jackson[/name], [name]Johannah[/name], [name]Jennifer[/name] and now [name]Jordyn[/name]-[name]Grace[/name]. Whoa!!

I love the name [name]Jordyn[/name]-[name]Grace[/name], but could live without Mikaya, it’s kinda strange… I really don’t like a lot of the names they have in there (especially [name]Jinger[/name]!), but I do like [name]Jackson[/name] too. And [name]Joy[/name]-[name]Anna[/name] is pretty.
Coming up with 18 J names must have been really tough, but it’s because of [name]Jesus[/name]… I’m surprised she only had one set of twins! You’d think there would be a lot more…

Blech. Why on earth would you choose to use only one letter if you’re going to have that many kids? That has to get so confusing. And [name]Jinger[/name]? Is that pronounced like [name]Ginger[/name]? [name]Jordyn[/name]-[name]Grace[/name] Makiya is bad on so many levels to me. Yuck.

I like Makiya seriously why would you name your kids all starting with the same letter, there is so many beautiful names out there I would be using them hehe

They scare me. And the names have, for the most part, been getting progressively worse as they go. I shudder to think what #19 will be, if they get there. I don’t like their “system” much either. Didn’t they say once that the whole “theme” was unitentional to start with? Something like the first two got J names just because they liked them and they gave the third a J so it fit in and with #4 they did the same, figuring it was their last.

If I named two with the same letter and figured the third was my last, I still wouldn’t give it a name that started the same as the first two, goodness why would I want to?

I think that their names are good. [name]Smitty[/name] actually missed a few things out [name]Jana[/name] and [name]John[/name]-david are twins and in between [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]Joy[/name]-anna there is a [name]Josiah[/name].

Oops, too may to keep track of!!

This is a great topic. If I had 17 kids and had to give them all names that start with J…hmmm… Here are my picks:
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Jedidiah[/name] (see, I’m with them on a few)
[name]Jessamine[/name]
[name]Jacinta[/name]
[name]Love[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Josiah[/name] but too close to [name]Joseph[/name]
[name]Jonathan[/name] (definitely starting to feel less inspired)
[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Jacquetta[/name]
[name]Jefferson[/name]
[name]January[/name]
[name]Jupiter[/name]
[name]Jethro[/name]
[name]Jemma[/name] (starting to cheat now)
[name]Jorie[/name]
[name]Joaquin[/name]
Whew! [name]Even[/name] have a few left over I could live with: [name]Jill[/name], [name]Jared[/name], [name]Justin[/name]. But the gender balance couldn’t tip far from what’s here.

Oh, and even forgot [name]Judah[/name], [name]Jules[/name], [name]June[/name], [name]Juniper[/name]. I could maybe do this – the naming part, not the having-17-kids part.

They totally cheated with “[name]Jinger[/name].” It was game-over at that point! And [name]Joy[/name]-[name]Anna[/name] and [name]Johannah[/name]? [name]Way[/name] too close.

I once knew a family who had seven kids whose names all started with Br----. When #8 came along, they just gave up the fight and named him [name]James[/name].

Funny! J’s not a bad letter to try to do this with. You definitely need to start with the right combination. But I can’t imagine limiting myself like this. It makes it seem like the kids are more like a unit or a product than a family of individuals.

Funny you should mention that, [name]Pam[/name]. I rather think that “unit or a product” thinking is where they are, thinking wise. They are a cohesive unit and don’t seem to foster individual thinking/being overmuch. One of the many reasons I could never use all one letter myself!

Exactly right! They aren’t really individuals really… it’s almost as if they have been given numbers instead of names. And [name]Johannah[/name] and [name]Joy[/name]-[name]Anna[/name] are WAYY too similar for sisters.

If I were to name 17 kids all starting with J in the same gender order as the Duggars they would be:

[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Jacob[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Jacqueline[/name]
[name]Jade[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]Joshua[/name]
[name]Jared[/name]
[name]Jeremy[/name]
[name]Justin[/name]
[name]Johanna[/name]
[name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Jamima[/name]

Please tell me what you think and if there are any names that are a lot alike. 18 J names is harder then you would think!

My 18 J kids would be…

[name]Jackson[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]January[/name]
[name]Jason[/name]
[name]Jemma[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Jennifer[/name]
[name]James[/name]
[name]June[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Jacinda[/name]
[name]Joaquin[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]
[name]Jordana[/name]
[name]Joselyn[/name]
[name]Jesse[/name]
[name]Julianna[/name]

Wow that was pretty hard, hopefully I would get lucky with a lot more girls than boys, and I also would feel sorry for little [name]June[/name] and [name]Juno[/name]…but thats the best I could do.

I could never use 17 J names, I don’t think I have that many I love! I could use A, C, E, M, R or S, though. And I could happily name 14 kids with Z names!

My cousins ([name]Jeremiah[/name], [name]Jennifer[/name], [name]Jedidiah[/name], and [name]Julianna[/name]) had J names. If the first initial had to be special, I would have it in ABC order:
[name]Adam[/name]/ [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Benjamin[/name]/ [name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Charles[/name]/ [name]Cecily[/name]
[name]David[/name]/ [name]Danae[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name]/ [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Frederick[/name]/ [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]George[/name]/ [name]Grace[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]/ [name]Helen[/name]
[name]Isaiah[/name]/ [name]Imogen[/name]
[name]James[/name]/ [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Kevin[/name]/ [name]Kennedy[/name]
[name]Levi[/name]/ [name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Michael[/name]/ [name]Marion[/name]
[name]Nicholas[/name]/ [name]Nancy[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]/ [name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Peter[/name]/ [name]Paloma[/name]
[name]Quentin[/name]/ [name]Quilla[/name]

I’m not so crazy about J in ‘jeneral.’ And please, if you have [name]Jordan[/name] don’t spell it [name]Jordyn[/name]. The only one I really remember is [name]Jinger[/name]. I have a list (not on nameberry) called, “[name]Hailey[/name]: Make It Your Own, or [name]Don[/name]'t Try This at Home!” Some of the names are: Haelea, [name]Haily[/name], and Heighleigh ('tis true! I knew one). I admire their dedication to J and hope their children don’t follow their parent’s example (with names only, of course).

I teach grade 7 and I have had [name]Kay[/name]-lee every imaginable way: [name]Kali[/name], [name]Kalie[/name], [name]Kaylee[/name], [name]Kaley[/name], [name]Kayleigh[/name], [name]Cailie[/name]…

Wow you guys I’m impressed! I have been trying but really can’t think of 18 names that I like that much  Btw, those of you who think the family is . . . unsettling should’ve watched the one where the oldest gets married. I grew up in a very conservative town but that was too much! Here is the best list that I can think of (I did keep some of theirs):
[name]Joseph[/name] (boy)
[name]Julianna[/name] (girl - not one of my faves but can’t be too picky)
[name]James[/name] (Boy)
[name]Jane[/name] (girl)
[name]Jemima[/name] (girl)
[name]Jaqueline[/name](girl - did I spell that wrong?)
[name]Jacoby[/name] (boy - getting desperate now . . .)
[name]Jolie[/name] (girl, I really like this name actually but wouldn’t use because of [name]Angelina[/name])
[name]Jedidiah[/name] ( boy, isn’t [name]Jedidiah[/name] [name]Smith[/name] a movie?)
[name]Jethro[/name] (boy)
[name]Jones[/name] ??? (boy - this is really stretching it)
[name]Juneau[/name] (Boy - Getting a little out of my comfort zone here)
[name]Judith[/name] (girl)
[name]Jonie[/name] (girl)
[name]June[/name] (girl)
Totally ran out of ideas towards the end there. Esp. for boys. And rats!! I like [name]Joseph[/name], [name]Josiah[/name], [name]Josie[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] - those are way too close togeather!

I think if I had to yell names that started with “J” all day long, eventually my front teeth would all crack. You have to clench your teeth together to say “J”. That’s why it’s good to name your kids names that all start with different letters!
But if I did have to come up with 17 “J” names:

[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Jane[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]John[/name]
[name]Jocelyn[/name]
[name]Joel[/name]
[name]Jemima[/name]
[name]James[/name], ok, I’m to 8: (this isn’t easy!)
[name]Jacqueline[/name]
[name]Josiah[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Jonah[/name]
[name]Jillian[/name]
[name]Jeremy[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Jenson[/name]
[name]Jessamyn[/name]

That was horrible and I would have a terrible time remembering their names. They would have to wear name tags. It would be easier to give them all names starting with different letters, maybe in alphabetical order. Or I would give each child a name that started with the same letter as their birthday month. But what if they were all born in [name]June[/name], [name]January[/name], and [name]July[/name]?
