Year 6: We get in a bad car accident. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is badly hurt and needs to spend a long amount of time recovering. I spend a lot of time away from work and decide after she is better that I want to refocus my energy on the kids and the property. Year 9: My older sister [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is having a hard time and moves in for six months. Her and her partner haven’t been getting along, so her partner took a contract in the Rockies. [name_f]Molly[/name_f] moves in with me so they can sublet their place. She spends the time helping me take care of the kids and doing some good old fashioned farm labour. I really appreciate the assistance and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] appreciates the space and the fresh air. Her and her partner reunite happier and healthier for the space, time and outdoors. [name_u]Jet[/name_u] goes through a sudden rebellious stage, which I personally believe stems from his issues with [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] the year before, and ends up running away from home. I can’t relax, even though [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] tells me to take a deep breath, it’s only a seven year old trying to make a point, and sure enough, [name_u]Jet[/name_u] is back within the hour.

year four
Much to our surprise, we welcome identical twin boys to our family! [name_u]Finn[/name_u] [name_m]Roderick[/name_m] [name_u]Keats[/name_u] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_m]Adam[/name_m] [name_u]Keats[/name_u] are born on [name_f]April[/name_f] 21. They are born slightly smaller than expected, but soon catch up.

year five
We take the children back to Belfast to visit my grandparents and brothers. It’s a big undertaking, but it goes well! [name_u]Jet[/name_u] is diagnosed with auditory processing disorder, which is big news, but explains a lot. While in Belfast, [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] becomes especially close to my oldest brother, [name_m]William[/name_m]. She talks about him non-stop once we’re back, so we make sure to arrange as many phone calls, Skype calls, and as much FaceTime with him as we can. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u] are the best of friends, and all but inseparable as they start walking and talking.

year six
We decide to take in foster children, a set of three siblings. We welcome [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], who is 6, [name_m]Ruben[/name_m], who is 14, and [name_m]Abel[/name_m], who is 16. It’s a challenging but rewarding year, and even more so at the end of the year, when they are able to be reunited with their parents. [name_u]Jet[/name_u] has been doing well since his diagnosis, but is having troubles with the school itself, which doesn’t seem to be adequately supporting him. In the end, [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and I decide to switch him to a private school, with an excellent reputation for student support. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] becomes noticeably closer with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and the two of them are able to spend lots of time together, especially as they bond over superheroes (yes, I married a big kid). [name_u]Rory[/name_u] has become quite active, and is constantly either running around or climbing things, particularly those which aren’t designed to be climbed.

year seven
After the twins’ relentless begging, we add a cat to the household; a Birman the boys decide to call [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_u]Jet[/name_u] start developing a closer relationship than before, and it’s very sweet to see the way they get on. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] jokes it’s like having two sets of twins: [name_u]Jet[/name_u] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and [name_u]Finn[/name_u] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] welcomes an imaginary friend into his life, whose name is [name_u]Max[/name_u] and is ‘the third twin’. We don’t know where it comes from, but it doesn’t seem to do any harm, so we enjoy supporting this by setting out an extra table setting for [name_u]Max[/name_u], making up the sofa bed, and even packing an extra apple for [name_u]Max[/name_u] at daycare, to make sure [name_u]Finn[/name_u] feels accepted.

year eight
We decide to take the children camping for a weekend. The twins are four by now, so while it’s pretty full-on, we manage to get through unharmed. [name_u]Jet[/name_u] discovers he has a particular talent for art, and is very interested in extending this. We buy him paints, pencils, and pastels, and let his creativity flow! [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is able to skip a grade because she is doing so well, and seems to thrive on this academic challenge.

year nine
Although we weren’t planning on it, we are graced by a surprise addition to the family. [name_f]India[/name_f] [name_f]Avalon[/name_f] [name_u]Keats[/name_u] is born in [name_u]December[/name_u], and surprises everybody further with a full head of hair! [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is struggling a little in gym class, and we suspect it’s because the children in her class are now a year older than her, and thus more physically capable than she is. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is climbing (still!) and manages to take a spectacular tumble out of a tree, breaking his arm. We get him to the hospital quickly, and by the time he wakes up with a cast on, it’s ‘cool’ and [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is probably jealous he doesn’t have one.

year ten
We unexpectedly welcome twins to the family! [name_m]Connor[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] [name_u]Keats[/name_u] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_u]Keats[/name_u] are born only ten months after their older sister. Unfortunately, they’re a little too eager to come into the world, and make their entrance in the car on the side of the road, halfway to the hospital! [name_u]Jet[/name_u] makes a new friend, [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] [name_m]McDermott[/name_m], who quickly becomes his best friend. They are both going to the same high school, and equally glad to have somebody to navigate their way through it with. [name_u]Finn[/name_u] is diagnosed with dyscalculia, which explains his difficulty with maths. [name_u]Rory[/name_u], on the other hand, is doing exceptionally well at maths, and starts to help his twin brother as best he can. My brother, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], gives [name_f]India[/name_f] a toy dinosaur that she quickly becomes obsessed with, and ‘Disaur’ can only be washed at very specific times, mainly when [name_f]Indi[/name_f]'s sleeping.

Family Plot

1. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] adopt a dog from a shelter. It’s an unknown mix of breeds. They decide to name it [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m], after the composer. [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] is treated like a junior family member.

2. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is offered a position as feature editor of a magazine. The benefits and pay are generous, but the main office is in Calgary, [name_f]Alberta[/name_f], so they have to move. They do so, and with some difficulty, get a rented house in the city. It’s small, but fully furnished, with a yard that’s big enough for [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] to romp around. [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], who has already finished studying architecture, looks for a job while [name_f]Rose[/name_f] starts work.

3. Maybe it’s because of the stress of their move, but the couple has started to fight over little things. When the two nearly come to blows one night, they decide to separate to avoid hurting each other. For five months, they don’t communicate, and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] wonders if the whole marriage thing was worth it. On the other side of the city, [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] wracks her brain, thinking that she ruined everything. Year 1: We adopt a beagle called [name_m]Roffe[/name_m].
Year 2: We volunteer as short-term foster parents for an 8 year old girl, [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Florida[/name_f], who [name_f]Ottaline[/name_f] hears about through work. The long-term adoption plans fall through, and rather than put her back into care, we decide to adopt her. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] was named for her mother, whose birthday she was born on. She’s going through a very rebellious phase that includes stealing money from my bag, but we go easy on her as she’s had a tough time.
Year 3: [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] and I are on are way to school when another car crashes into the back of ours. Luckily we’re unhurt except mild whiplash and a bit of a shock. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is definitely proving to be a strong-minded little girl, and she comes down for lunch one [name_m]Saturday[/name_m] proudly displaying a mess of unevenly chopped hair, most of which is now all over her bedroom floor.
Year 4: We decide it might be good for [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] to have a sibling, so we use a sperm donor to conceive a baby boy who we name [name_m]Marco[/name_m] [name_m]Maxim[/name_m]. Despite his [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] birth being a happy omen, [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] does not react well, and resents all the attention the new baby is getting. We hope she’ll start to appreciate him more once he’s old enough to play with. [name_m]Marco[/name_m] bonds quickly with [name_f]Ottaline[/name_f], his birth mother, but it takes me a bit longer to win his trust. He seems to be rather introverted.
Year 5: We adopt a Birman cat, who [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] insists on naming Hook, as she has recently seen [name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_m]Pan[/name_m] the Musical and decided [name_m]Captain[/name_m] Hook was her favourite character. She and two friends, [name_f]Dosia[/name_f] and Vosdanig, were invited to the musical by the fourth member of their gang, [name_m]Theobald[/name_m]. The four of them have become thick as thieves. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] still isn’t showing much interest in [name_m]Marco[/name_m], but our neighbours’ 4 year old daughter [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] adores him and is always asking to come and play.
Year 6: We adopt another cat, a [name_m]Bombay[/name_m] called [name_u]Rex[/name_u] after [name_m]Marco[/name_m]'s favourite dinosaur toy. He is still an anxious child and dislikes being away from us, but as long as he has [name_u]Rex[/name_u] he seems to be OK. [name_u]True[/name_u] to her extroverted self, [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] has made several more friends at school: [name_m]Nazih[/name_m], Aethelwine and Yong. We live in a very multicultural area.
Year 7: We find out that [name_f]Ottaline[/name_f]'s sister Sashura, who is only 21, is pregnant. She is still at university, and can’t raise the baby herself, so we volunteer to adopt at birth. We name our new baby boy Kansas Cornwall. Kansas is immediately taken into the NICU at birth as the doctors suspect he has meningitis. Unfortunately they are right, and he spends several weeks recovering, but luckily there seems to be no lasting damage. Meanwhile [name_m]Marco[/name_m] is turning into an active toddler, and especially loves physical activities at nursery. In fact running around is the only thing that takes his mind off how miserable he is to be away from home. We feel very guilty for sending him away, but know that he needs to learn to be around other people. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] is now a lively teenager, and has her first kiss with [name_m]Theobald[/name_m], her long-time friend.
Year 8: In between all the childcare, [name_f]Ottaline[/name_f] and I start visiting the local rock-climbing wall. We find it very therapeutic. Kansas develops an allergy to dogs, and with a heavy heart we have to send [name_m]Roffe[/name_m] to live with [name_f]Ottaline[/name_f]'s brother [name_m]Patrick[/name_m] and his wife. [name_m]Marco[/name_m] is dealing with his separation anxiety much better, and has become best friends with a sweet boy called [name_m]Garfield[/name_m]. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] goes on a school trip to Croatia.
Year 9: To fill the [name_m]Roffe[/name_m]-sized hole in our lives, we adopt another cat, a [name_f]Maine[/name_f] Coon called [name_m]Simon[/name_m] (name chosen by [name_m]Marco[/name_m] for no obvious reason). Kansas is scared of loud noises, as we discover during my drum practice session. Much to his dismay, [name_m]Marco[/name_m] is not deemed ready to start junior school, and is made to wait until next year before starting. He was a late [name_u]August[/name_u] baby and would have been very young for his year, so it’s probably for the best. [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] gets a part-time job. It’s nice to see her growing into a slightly less wayward young woman.
Year 10: We hear of 7 year old twins in need of a foster home - it seems they have been turned down by a few people who don’t want to take on two foster children at the same time. We step up, and as no long-term homes become available, we decide to add them permanently to our family. Their names are [name_m]Erik[/name_m] [name_m]Ford[/name_m] and [name_f]Christine[/name_f] [name_f]Marlene[/name_f]. Their birthday is [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] [name_u]Day[/name_u], which makes [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] a challenge as we want to make them feel special without making the other kids feel left out. [name_m]Erik[/name_m] is quite active, and breaks his wrist playing football with [name_m]Marco[/name_m] in the garden. Perhaps predictably, our fiery [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] doesn’t take too well to having another girl in the house after years of just brothers, and things are difficult for a while whenever she and [name_f]Christine[/name_f] are in the same room. Kansas develops a nut allergy. We’re beginning to suspect his difficult start in life did have a lasting impact on his health. [name_m]Even[/name_m] after being held back a year, [name_m]Marco[/name_m]'s shyness means he is still struggling at school, and despite the strain on our finances we decide to put him into a private school, where the small class size should make him feel more comfortable. We find out that [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] has been sleeping with [name_m]Theobald[/name_m], but as they have been together for several years and she is 16, we don’t kick up a fuss.

Year 1: Eden is offered a great opportunity to do her nursing practice in Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. The couple moves back to Will’s birthplace.

Year 2: Having settled in to their new home, the couple decides to adopt a Wheaten Terrier. They call him Roffe

Year 3: Due to a childhood sensitivity to the lungs, in the beginning of winter Will comes down with a serious case of pneumonia. He is unable to work and the couple struggles emotionally and financially.

Year 4: While Will recovered from the pneumonia, the stress of having him sick and being solely responsible for their finances was too much for Eden. As a result she suffers a serious anxiety disorder.

Year 5: With Will back on his feet, the couple is doing a lot better. To help Eden put her anxiety behind her and for both of them to relax, they become members of the local archery club.

Year 6: Health is not this couple’s strong suit. Following a particularly difficult incident at work, Eden’s anxiety is back, escalating now to a form of psychosis. She decides to finally seek help.

Year 7: Eden’s favourite foster brother Stefan is getting married! The couple travels to Calgary to be at the wedding.

Year 8: Eden’s continuous visit to therapy has been working and the couple has been doing well financially ever since Eden finished her training and started working. Stefan’s wedding reminded her how much she had missed her family. Will, who has no family of his own, shares the sentiment. The couple spends a months around Christmas visiting Eden’s sister Lottie and her family.
