Family Plot

Year 1 — The couple feels like they’re ready to have children and [name_f]Regina[/name_f] suggests they adopt instead of going the artificial insemination route. [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] loves the idea of adopting a child and the two of them begin the adoption process, eventually bringing home a sweet newborn named [name_u]Linden[/name_u] [name_u]Teagan[/name_u] Voorpret. The boy was adopted from [name_m]Cork[/name_m], [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], and needed to be in the NICU because he was born premature.

Year 2 — [name_f]Regina[/name_f] and [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] have to work through a rough patch in their relationship, mostly due to the stress caused by their respective jobs and by having to take care of a newborn. They separate for a month, during which [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] goes to live with a former college roommate of hers, but then reconcile.

Year 3 — Their house catches on fire. No one gets hurt, but they have to relocate. They decide to move to the USA, specifically to Indianapolis, [name_u]Indiana[/name_u], where they rent a 3-bedroom house. [name_f]Regina[/name_f] finds a job as a science teacher, while [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] starts working as a social worker for a local agency. Once again, they’re having serious problems with their relationship, but everything seems to work out well in the end.

Year 4 — The family goes on an exciting trip to a well-known national park and they have a wonderful time together. [name_f]Regina[/name_f] and [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] want [name_u]Linden[/name_u] to grow up to be a nature lover just like them, so they try to teach him to respect the environment and he seems to be really interested in animals and plants.

Year 5 — [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] gets involved in a minor car accident on her way to work. The family car is damaged and she sprains her wrist while attempting to get out of it quickly, but thanfully she doesn’t get too hurt.

Year 6 — [name_f]Regina[/name_f] loses her job and the family struggles financially for a while, until she gets hired part-time to work as an astronomer for a local observatory. Her paycheck isn’t great, but at least she gets to do what she loves and she also gets to spend more time with his son and strengthens their relationship.

Year 7 — [name_f]Regina[/name_f]'s birth mother wants to reconnect with her and she accepts to let her text her, but she soon finds out that the only reason she contacted her is because she wants to ask her daughter for money to do God-knows-what with other junkies. Year 9 — A family friend’s cat gives birth to five healthy kittens. My name in Antonia Luz Livingston and I’m married to Wolf Thaddeus Livingston. We both are social workers, and started our married life in Carthage, the suburb where I grew up in Cincinatti, Ohio.

In 2008, I was 20 and Wolf was 26. We had our first kids during a quiet October night, little twin boys. They were born with full heads of hair: so funny! We called them Indigo Moss and Titian Dove. It was a wonderful year.

In 2009, as we’re working very close to foster care institutions, we decided to adopt a little girl called Patsy Reba who was our boys’ age, 1 and her big brother Eli Sunny. Eli was such a nice little boy, taking such good care of his baby sister, we never hesitated or regretted our choice afterwards. That year, Indigo met his lifelong friend Katzumi, who was kept by the same nanny as him. A few days after Patsy and Eli’s arrival, our Titian opened his head a first time falling backwards. It was my first (but not my last I must say) fright as a mother!

In 2010, we had triplets! They were born on a very hot Sunday in August. We called them Molly Hilda, Belle Clementine and Tim Peter. Two sisters at once for little Patsy! I thought she would grow with brothers only like me! That was a lot for Indigo, who already started to show how much like his grandmother he was by all this quietness and observation skills: 5 brothers and sisters in two years. He started biting us from time to time and we had big problems at child’s care when he bit that little girl called Sappho.

In 2011, we adopted Cork Boot Jack, a red American Curl the kids chose. I remember that year when Ames, my brother (Amedeo Lamar) offered science toys to Indigo and he really took a deep interest in them. That was also the year when Titian opened his head a second time. I was so surprised. Titian was (and is still) just like his father: very logical, very reserved but he kept hurting himself very badly, moving around all the time, as if he couldn’t help it.

In 2012, we decided to adopt two other kids from foster care: Dolly Faith, 16, who made me think a lot of my mother and Randy Chet, 12, her brother who made me think so much of my brother Adonis. Both very good children. But Belle, this year, as she was only 2, had meningitis, and it was horrifying to me. I can only thank my brother Archie for being there all the way for his favorite niece. I didn’t know back then I would have to go through similar expriences afterwards.

In 2013, I lost my job. Belle’s illness and 9 kids to handle at only 25. Even with the help of my husband and family, it was a hard time. Belle had recovered but she broke her leg a few days after being better at only 3. And Molly was diagnosed with immune deficiency. I felt so guilty for being so absent the last year. It was the worst year of my life.

In 2014, things were looking up. I had found a new job, Titian (6 years old) skipped a grade because he turned out to be particularly smart, Patsy (6), who was turning to be a very artistic and sensitive girl, had her first crush on a boy named Caleb and it was so cute to watch, Eli started to develop a very strong interest in stargazing and we spent summer nights outside watching shooting stars, and Molly made great friends with Gabriella and Melky from hospital. She was starting to become a local star back there, always active and friendly with everyone, just like her Grandpa. Everything was great. And to add to our happiness, Lucia Marguerite was born during a great storm in full January. I could not ask for more.

But I did. In 2015, we adopted three more brothers and sisters from foster care: Montgomery Ralph, 1, like Lucia; Winona Carrie, 3; and Landon Darius, 8, a very social little boy who loved to play all the time. Unfortunately this year, Indigo, 7, experienced meningitis just like Belle a few years ago and I stood by his bedside most of that yar. Lucia really made me go through it: we developed a very special bond with this hardship I was going through. Positive things happened though: Patsy, 7, made excellent friends with a girl in the neighbourhood called Frida; Dolly, 19, introduced us to her first boyfriend Phineas, a very good boy; Randy, 15, took a school trip to Northern Canada, in the province of Navanut and really enjoyed it; and Eli, 13, told us out of the blue the he was gay. We tried to be as supportive as we could and hope we did a good job with him.

In 2016, Wolf got offered a position as the head of the Indianapolis city social department. He could not refuse the job. So we took our 13 kids with us in two cars and drove a little more than 100 miles with them to move in a nice house is the suburbs. I was very sad to leave the neighbourhood where I grew up, as well as my parents and brothers but it ws only a two-hour drive so I got quickly over it. Molly and Belle (6) didn’t start off too well in their new school: Belle started a big conflict with a girl named Vega and these stories went on for a while; Molly also had a meningitis and almost died of it because of her immune deficiency. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Of course, she stayed back a grade because of the seriousness of her illness. Indigo broke his arm in the middle of all this so it wasn’t too easy. What’s more, Winona, only 4, started developing a weird rivalry with Lucia to whom I always was so particularly close. But Eli made good friends in the city and started to become passionate about the LGBT cause. In the meantime, Randy, 16, told us that he was gay as well.

A year later, in 2017, everything was looking up. The kids finally got used to Indianapolis and started to make friends. Indigo, 9, developed a major crush on a girl called Mila, “the woman he’ll marry” according to him; Eli spent his time with his best friend Augustine; Belle skipped a grade, leaving Molly definitely behind but that never was a problem between those girls (Belle was a very competitive child at only 7); Tim’s teacher told us he excelled at math, he was uncommonly good at it; Lucia started developing a very strong relationship with her brother Monty, which was good news to me since they are the same age and the same Montgomery, 3, made good friends with a boy named Garfield. But suddenly, my dad died, leaving us and the whole Carthage in mourning. I know that our decision to leave Cinci had a part in his sudden decease. He loved us all so much. I was very moved when I saw Randy, 17, get really interested in his adoptive Grandpa’s art and reall took to it.
