Recently, I’ve put up a couple of posts asking opinions of names, including [name_f]Abree[/name_f]. The other names got varied responses, but [name_f]Abree[/name_f] was virtually always disliked. Now, I’m curious: what is it that makes you hate [name_f]Abree[/name_f]? And, what country are you from? Because it might be that certain countries dislike it and others like it? Also, if you like it, please say, and why!
I don’t know how to say it. Is it like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]? If so I don’t like the spelling [name_f]Abree[/name_f].
And since you asked I’m in the US.
My first instinct was to say the A as in apple or abracadabra. Then I thought it’s a unique spelling of [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], that would get mispronounced all the time. But I just looked it up and see it’s related to [name_m]Abraham[/name_m], so I’m assuming it’s [name_m]Abe[/name_m]-ree? kinda like [name_u]Avery[/name_u]? That makes me like it much more, though in general I’m not a big fan of ‘bree’ names. (im from the states)
I think it’s due to the fact that 90% of NB users do not like creative spellings or made up names. Pair that with the fact that it’s a creative spelling of a relatively modern (sounding) name, and that there are probably 10 other creative spellings of this or very similar names which are ranking high in the US and it’s almost doomed to get not super positive ratings from Berries.
Pronunciation is ab-ree, like it’s spelt! Not like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]. Would that make people like it more?
so it’s [name_m]Ab[/name_m] as in…abdomen? not AY-bree? I think that’s the problem, the pronunciation is unclear.
To be honest, which is what you asked, it’s a made-up name and I’m not a fan. Especially because it’s so similar to the ultra-popular ‘[name_f]Bree[/name_f]’ variations. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], [name_f]Brielle[/name_f], [name_f]Briella[/name_f], [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], etc. Seems like you liked a more popular variation but wanted to get creative.
If it was a surname from your family tree or had some other significance, I might like it a tad more. But as is, it screams ‘I’m trying too hard.’
I also think it would constantly get misheard as [name_u]Avery[/name_u], which is currently #13 in the US.
I’m from [name_f]Canada[/name_f].
I’m from the US. Though you say it is pronounced just like it is spelled, I think it could easily be read as Ay-bree or [name_m]Ab[/name_m]-bree. It’s very ambiguous and I think there would be a lot of confusion. Not a big deal, my name ([name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]) gets a lot of various pronunciations as well. (A-lee-sa, A-liss-a, sometimes A-leesh-a). Most people on this site don’t like names that are “creative” or “made-up.” I’m not a huge fan of it but will admit I like the ay-bree pronunciation better. I do like that it lends itself to nn [name_f]Bree[/name_f].
It’s an Irish name, and I think [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] originated from it, not vice-versa! And yes, ab as in abdomen
Ok, now that the pronunciation is clear, it sounds made up to me and I still don’t like it. It’s not awful, simply not my style.
[name_f]Bree[/name_f] is an Irish name or rather the anglicized version of Brígh, there is no record of [name_f]Abree[/name_f] having any relations to it. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] originates from Alberich, an ancient Germanic name and has nothing to do with the Irish [name_f]Bree[/name_f]/Brígh or [name_f]Abree[/name_f].
[name_f]Abree[/name_f] can ocasionally be found as a last name and some sites list it as an Italian version of [name_m]Abraham[/name_m], but behindthename doesn’t say anything of that kind and that’s the site I trust.
Is it supposed to be pronounced like [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u]? If so, put a “u” in there. [name_f]Abree[/name_f] sounds like an odd way to honor someone named [name_m]Abraham[/name_m]. I just don’t like the sound of “[name_m]ABE[/name_m]-ree”, which is how everyone would pronounce the name. I’m from the US, by the way.
From a quick googling search, most sites says that [name_f]Abree[/name_f] is an Italian feminine variation of [name_m]Abraham[/name_m].
That being said, I had never heard of the name before. Most of the time that’s not a problem (I love finding ‘new’ names), but with this name I had no idea how to pronounce it and that’s quite unappealing to me. At first I thought it was a creative spelling of [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], which is very popular right now.
I mainly don’t like the name because the pronunciation is not intuitive and the girl would grow up constantly correcting people “no, not [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], not Ay-bree, [name_m]AB[/name_m]-[name_f]REE[/name_f]” and I wouldn’t want to do that to a child.
Opheliaflora is correct. To elaborate further, Abrey is a surname that is from [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] - Surname Database: Abrey Last Name Origin
I personally think it’s a nice name, when spelled as Abrey. If you wanted the [name_m]AB[/name_m]-ree pronunciation, and a spelling that is versatile, I think Abrey or Abry is the way to go. [name_f]Abree[/name_f] seems artificial to me.
Because I have the urge to finish it with “cadabra”, despite it being -ee and not -ah. It doesn’t please me aesthetically either, but I’m not big on names ending in -ee regardless. It’s a confusing pronunciation also because it’s not at all familiar, so I mix up ah-bree and ay-bree. I prefer [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], despite being different names, or even [name_f]Aubree[/name_f].
Oh, and I’m from England.
I’m from the UK and I think [name_f]Abree[/name_f] is really cute. [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] is one of my favourite names and it has that feel. I think I would spell it Aabree/Abrey though.
Personally, had no idea how to pronounce the name. I think I have to agree with spelling it a different way though, because I think the spelling you have would be confusing. I’m from the US.
To me, it looks like one of those names like [name_f]Aubrielle[/name_f] that’s just made-up and doesn’t actually mean anything. I don’t really like the sound of it either, and it’s a bit too similar to [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u], which I’m very tired of being used on girls.
I’m from Australia.
I don’t like it because A) I pronounced it AY-bree at first and wouldn’t have guessed [name_m]AH[/name_m]-bree, B) it looks made up and trendy (plus when names end with “ee” I really emphasize it in my head: for example, when I see [name_f]Aubree[/name_f] my mind says aw-BREEEEEEEEEE and the “ee” goes on for eternity or till I stop thinking about it), and C) because when I saw how you do pronounce it, it sounds like my name [name_u]Abby[/name_u] said wrong. Like you’re trying to make [name_u]Abby[/name_u] more unique. I slightly prefer it said AY-bree because that at least sounds like a trendy name but [name_m]AH[/name_m]-bree sounds like a surname.
I think that the spelling, pronunciation, trendiness, and unfamiliarity is what makes berries dislike it. Unfamiliarity is hard for a lot of berries since a good number are very educated on names and name origins and ones that are unfamiliar to the berry community are usually made-up.
I’m from the US.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] re read and realised I was thinking it was pronounced Ay-bree not [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-bree.
Therefore I would suggest the spellings Abbree/Abbrey as it is more helpful pronunciation wise and looks cuter imo. I have to say this name is really growing on me. I think it’s a really cute alternative to [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] for the [name_u]Abby[/name_u] nickname as I’ve never been keen on the [name_f]Gail[/name_f] part of [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] but have always found [name_u]Abby[/name_u] cute.
I’m really liking the combos Abbree [name_f]Rose[/name_f] and Abbree [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] atm
