Alaska?

My husband and I want to name our daughter [name]Alaska[/name] in honor of our favorite vacation spot.

[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name] would be her first and middle name, but we aren’t sure how it comes off to other people. We like it because if she decides she doesn’t want to be called [name]Alaska[/name], she can go by AJ (which we really like) or [name]Allie[/name], which is fine, too.

We can’t decide if this name is too weird, or just unusual enough to work. What do you think?

I think [name]Alaska[/name] is a cool, unisex place name. I personally wouldn’t use it myself (I tend to lean towards ultra girly names) but I like the personal connection you have to it. I’m not a huge fan of have both the fn and mn being unisex. [name]Alaska[/name] is a relatively new name that is being used, and its probably 50-50 for boys to girls. [name]Jude[/name] however definately is a boy’s name in my eyes. When announcing the baby’s name you would definately have to say “This is our baby GIRL [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name].”

Also, do you plan to travel to [name]Alaska[/name] with your future daughter [name]Alaska[/name]? Is it just me or would it be weird to be saying “[name]Alaska[/name] look-its [name]Alaska[/name]!” It might be fun, but it also might be kinda strange.

I do love the personal connection that you have to [name]Alaska[/name]. But, I personally would leave it for the middle spot. But, if you love it, ignore me and use it!

Sorry for my rambling! Good luck!

Thanks for the response - I have considered other middle names to bring it that more feminine feel; however, I would want it to start with J to allow us to call her AJ. My husband likes [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jane[/name], but I’m not completely sold. Sounds a little bit like a cartoon character to me.

What about [name]Alaska[/name] [name]June[/name]? It’s very close, and has a similar feel as [name]Jude[/name], but it’s more of a feminine name? And as for [name]Alaska[/name], I really do like the name. It’s different, but it’s not too odd. And having the nickname options makes it that much better, since it is a very different name.

Maybe…

[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]/[name]Julie[/name]
[name]Johannah[/name]
[name]Jessamine[/name]
[name]Jacqueline[/name]

I like [name]Alaska[/name], however, [name]Jude[/name] to me is a boy’s name. I would say [name]June[/name] as an alternative, however, the capitol of [name]Alaska[/name] is [name]Juneau[/name], and to me, that’s a bit much lol. If you really wanted to go with something similar to Jude, I would go with Alaska Jade. However, I would personally pair [name]Alaska[/name] with a more classic girl’s name, just to ground it a little more.

I love the suggestion of [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name]! So pretty!

I don’t like it at all, especially with the middle name [name]Jude[/name]. People would automatically assume she was a he, regardless of the clothing she wore. Since [name]Alaska[/name] is such a unique word to be used as a name, the middle name should be something gender specific, so people will help understand that your child is a girl.

If looking to name your child after your favorite vacation spot, I’d look for something a bit more personable.

That said, I do like the suggestion of [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name] more than [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name]/[name]Jane[/name]/[name]June[/name]. [name]Alaska[/name] [name]June[/name] is too similar to [name]Juneau[/name], [name]Alaska[/name].

[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name] is too masculine for my taste. If you’re going to go with [name]Alaska[/name], you’d need to go with one of the more feminine “J” names that have been suggested.

That being said, I’m really not into place names that don’t have some really deep family associations or significance.

When I first saw your post, honestly, I immediately thought of this: “I’ll-Ask-ya” (a question, etc.). [name]Just[/name] something to keep in mind when it comes to teasing & school–besides the fact that it would be a pretty ‘out-there’ name to begin with. I think the idea of it is pretty, though.

Hate the combo of [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name] but love [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jane[/name].
I love the name [name]Alaska[/name], and it’s pretty versatile [name]IMO[/name].

I think it’s pretty. I don’t think it’s too weird, just unusual enough to be charming. What I can’t quite get out of my head is “I’ll ask her.” I don’t know if you’re from the UK or somewhere in NE [name]America[/name] but [name]Alaska[/name] can sound just like that phrase depending on your accent! [name]Just[/name] something to think about because it would bother me.

I really like [name]Alaska[/name], but I am not so fond of it with [name]Jude[/name]. Some great middle name suggestions here though!

Thanks for all of your suggestions/comments! I think I’m warming up to [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] - sounds feminine enough to me.

Honestly, I think [name]Alaska[/name] is a terrible name. Sorry. I find it tacky in the way that most location names are. I would only put it in the middle name spot, but, really, I think you should move on. You will always have memories of the place without saddling your child with the name.

I love [name]Alaska[/name]! It’s one of my top names  I don’t particularly like [name]Jude[/name] though - nothing wrong with it, just not my style. You could try:

[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Skye[/name] (on my list)
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]June[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Lily[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Hollie[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Ingrid[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Paige[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name]

[name]Alaska[/name] is a huge guilty pleasure of mine. It sounds very feminine to my ear and does have all the [name]AL[/name]- nicknames built right in.

[name]Jude[/name], however, ruins it. [name]Jude[/name] is strictly male to me, so I can’t get by a little girl being named the unisex-but-so-male-heavy name [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jude[/name]. I like pp suggestion of [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Jade[/name] if you want something similar to [name]Jude[/name].

Other “J” middles:
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Joy[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Joyce[/name]
[name]Alaska[/name] [name]Juniper[/name]

If you decide not to go with the nn “AJ” (which to me is very masculine anyways), I think there are a lot of great one-syllable options that sound beautiful with [name]Alaska[/name]. [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Paige[/name], [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Rose[/name], [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Mae[/name]/[name]Maeve[/name], etc. to list some. Good luck!

Wow, I’m surprised no one’s mentioned the book “Looking For [name]Alaska[/name]” by [name]John[/name] [name]Green[/name]. It’s one of my favorite books, so that’s where my mind goes. There’s a character named [name]Alaska[/name], so if you’re a [name]John[/name] [name]Green[/name] fan, I like the connection, although I personally wouldn’t love a little girl of mine to have [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Young[/name] as her namesake. That said, I think the name is nice, and I like [name]June[/name], [name]Jane[/name], and [name]Juliet[/name] with it.

I think [name]Alaska[/name] is rather pretty. I live in [name]Alaska[/name], so I’d never use it though. There’s also Alyeska, which is where [name]Alaska[/name] comes from.

Other [name]Alaska[/name] names:

[name]Aurora[/name]
[name]Bethel[/name]
[name]Bristol[/name]
Cordova
[name]Denali[/name]
[name]Hope[/name]
[name]Juneau[/name]
Kenai
[name]Kodiak[/name]
Nenana
Seldovia
Sitka
[name]Snow[/name]
Solstice
[name]Sterling[/name]
Susitna
[name]Timber[/name]
[name]Tundra[/name]
[name]Willow[/name]
[name]Winter[/name]

Most names up here seem better suited for boys, it seems, so I didn’t include those. I think [name]Alaska[/name] works just fine, just thought I’d share some other names I’ve heard or considered myself.

All I think of is pageant [name]Diva[/name], almost on every show of Toddlers in Tiaras there is a girl named [name]Alaska[/name].

[name]Alaska[/name] is unique and pretty! I like it. I could never use it because I can’t get “i’ll ask ya” out of my head. But I like it for someone else, I really do. [name]Juliet[/name] is one of my favorites. [name]Alaska[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] gets my vote!
