Personally I would not name twins, triplets, etc any different than I name singletons. Twins, triplets, etc do have a very strong bond with each other but they are individuals that deserve to have their own identity. I am one that is not for dressing them alike every day. I have known a couple families that dress all their children, not twins, alike. I wonder if they would like to be dressed just like their siblings day in day out. I am not into matching all their bedding, matched toys, etc (people can go way overboard with twins). They have their own likes and dislikes just like everyone else.
In naming them, I would choose my top names. [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Boone[/name_m] and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_u]Dove[/name_u] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] “[name_f]Poet[/name_f]”, [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] [name_m]Wolf[/name_m] and [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_f]Poet[/name_f] “[name_f]Poet[/name_f]”
The worst [name_m]IRL[/name_m] twin names that I knew were “[name_u]Kelly[/name_u]” and “[name_f]Kylie[/name_f]”… People got them so mixed up, even when they knew them well, especially at school (they would get the wrong twin’s paper work etc)… The names were way to similar.
Other twins that I have known that were named a lot more nicely were “[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]”, because the mum wanted the names to rhyme, but the girls went by their nicknames “[name_f]Becca[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Cassie[/name_f]” so they were still different enough.
Other twins that i have known:
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] (good names together, not “matchy”)
[name_u]Madison[/name_u] and [name_m]Zachary[/name_m] (and little sis [name_f]Chloe[/name_f])
[name_m]Ben[/name_m] and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] (i don’t like the double b…)
triplets: [name_f]Natasha[/name_f], [name_m]Jarrad[/name_m] and [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] (which always sounded to me like 2 matching names and one stand out)
If I ever had twins I would name them:
GG: [name_f]Lissa[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] & [name_f]Neena[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
After my Mum and [name_f]MiL[/name_f], and sisters,
BB: [name_u]Leigh[/name_u] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Paul[/name_m] [name_m]Trevor[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m]
After my FiL and Dad, and brothers.
BG: [name_u]Seth[/name_u] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
(favorite first names and family middles)
[name_m]Ah[/name_m], some how I knew someone would bring up the principle of treating twins differently because they’re different people etc. and I am not saying that you should treat them any differently than you would singletons, but I am curious about people naming twins, not rearing them. And just as there is controversy regarding concern about “cohesion of a sibset” as another nameberry user once said, twins names will likely be said in conjunction more frequently or at least with the same frequency as regular siblings and if it is indeed something the parents care about the same care should be put into naming them whether that be differently or the same as you would name singletons.
For example I might be comfortable naming twins Ivy and Seraphina because despite their differences in length they are both (fairly) equally feminine but I wouldn’t name twins Seraphina and Briar for instance despite liking both of them because stylewise one is much more feminine than the other.
@cimorhinelea I like the set of [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f]! [name_m]Both[/name_m] long and elegant with easily accessible nicknames! And I love your boy/girl set of [name_u]Seth[/name_u] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].
@lovemysweeties your names are nice too. I especially like [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_m]Bennett[/name_m].
My sister mentioned the other day that she thought [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] would make cute twin names and I had to politely but carefully discourage that notion as she is pregnant and very emotional lol.
BB: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Emory[/name_u] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
BG: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Emory[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
GG: [name_f]Rosalia[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] and [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]
The only deviation from my top two names is [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]. I prefer [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] over [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] but for singleton siblings or twins I’m not sure I like the way [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] sound together but I’m trying to make it grow on me because I adore those two names.
Thanks glad you like! Ohhh I loooooove [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Annie[/name_f]! That’s a beautiful idea
and I agree with you on the “[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]” over the “[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]”, although I can definitely see “[name_m]Seb[/name_m]” and “[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]” riding bikes, playing with Lego, coloring in together.
Also- LOL [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] made me laugh big time.
I know a few sets of twins. So far the best I’ve heard is [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] & [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]. [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], although popular, go together well but are different where they won’t be mixed up all the time. [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] are different enough but have the “twinish” nicknames [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] which I thought was cute.
I am good friends with a set of twin girls. They were talking about their names one day and said their mom wanted two names that “went together” and sounded like they were twins. They’re names are [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] and [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f], which definitely go together and sound like twins, but I just don’t like how they both could potentially have the nickname “[name_u]Allie[/name_u]”. Its always bothered me when two siblings could potentially have the same nickname, therefore neither of them can have that nickname.
If I had twins:
B/B: [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Evander[/name_m] & [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]
B/G: [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u] & [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_u]Sammy[/name_u] & [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
G/G: [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] & [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
My boy set is just my top two boys names. I do have a “matchy-er” twin boy set but I don’t know if I’d be brave enough to use it. [name_u]Sammy[/name_u] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] are the names of the twins from my favorite book but I just made them nicknames to separate them from the book characters a little more. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]/[name_f]Lila[/name_f] are just names that I think go really well together for twin sisters. They aren’t my favorite girl names but I just love the way they sound together.
The best twin names I’ve heard are likely [name_m]William[/name_m] & [name_f]Raya[/name_f] or [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] & [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]. [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], and not matchy. If I were to have twins:
I’ve met twins named [name_f]Kallie[/name_f] and [name_f]Chessie[/name_f], [name_m]Lance[/name_m] and [name_m]Vance[/name_m], [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] and [name_m]Malik[/name_m], and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f]. Of the four, [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Claire[/name_f] are my favorite set.
I would look at twin names a little differently than singletons, but the name would still depend on the baby.
BB: [name_m]Roger[/name_m] [name_m]Erik[/name_m] and [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_u]Kai[/name_u]
BG: [name_u]Orion[/name_u] [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
GG: [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_u]Brooke[/name_u]
Good twinsets I know are [name_f]Gemma[/name_f] and [name_f]Katie[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f] and [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_m]Luke[/name_m] would be my favourites. There are also the matchy ones like [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. Apparently people are very imaginative when naming twins, though the last two pairs’ have other singleton female siblings with popular nicknamey names too so they’d probably end up with those names even if they weren’t twins. I also know a [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] “[name_u]Jess[/name_u]” and a [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] “[name_m]Ben[/name_m]” which I’m not fond of either.
If I had twins there wouldn’t really be any difference than if I were naming singletons, although I really like the idea of giving twins names that are different but have the same meaning.
G/G: [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] “[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]” and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Stella[/name_f] “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]”*
OR [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] “[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]” and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Eva[/name_f] “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]”*
G/B: [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]"[name_u]Georgie[/name_u]"* and [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Fraser[/name_m]
B/B: [name_u]Tristan[/name_u] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Fraser[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
*I keep changing my mind about the second middle for the girls’ names (atm they are [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] for [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] and [name_f]Charis[/name_f] for [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]) but I think that if they were twins I would use one these two same-meaning-but-different sets.
I taught twins named [name_m]Gorka[/name_m] and Beñat, and I think they’re great together.
I don’t really know many twins at all, though. Oh, I used to coach twin girls named [name_f]Grace[/name_f] & [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. They fit their names perfectly, too. [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] was more mischievous, talkative, she had more tanned skin, dark eyes, and dark hair, and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] was the complete opposite. She was extremely soft-spoken, blue eyes, blonde hair, very sweet but timid. It was really interesting how different they were! Their names are quite nice, too.
I wouldn’t name twins any differently than I would singletons.
Right now, I’d go with:
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] & [name_m]Marius[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m] & [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] & [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f]
(with no input from my SO, haha)
The best twins names I know are [name_u]Seth[/name_u] and [name_m]Callum[/name_m], and the worst would be [name_m]Fergus[/name_m] and [name_m]Angus[/name_m]. I think fairness is important in naming twins, if one gets a family name they both should, if the plan is for to mostly by a nn, the other ones name should at least have the option of being shortened, they should be reasonably similar style (ie no [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], but [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are fine), and definitely no matchy names (no sharing initials, rhyming or obvious themes).
G/G: [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f]
G/B: [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f] and [name_m]Casper[/name_m] [name_u]Maurice[/name_u]
B/B: [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_f]Briar[/name_f] and [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Abel[/name_m]
[name_f]Caitlin[/name_f] and [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Katie[/name_f]
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
I know twins [name_m]IRL[/name_m] called [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and they make me swoon! They are perfect together. I wouldn’t name twins any differently to singletons, or regular siblings. The names should compliment each other but not match.
[name_m]Matthew[/name_m] and [name_m]Mark[/name_m]
[name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_m]Kevin[/name_m]
[name_f]Melissa[/name_f] and [name_u]Julie[/name_u]
[name_f]Paulette[/name_f] and [name_f]Pamela[/name_f]
I prefer twin names that are the same style, similar lengths, similar sounds, but unique initials. Right now, I would go with:
GG: [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Anne[/name_f]
BB: [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m] and [name_m]Marcus[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]
GB: [name_u]Eden[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f] and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]
I know a LOT of [name_m]IRL[/name_m] twins (myself included) and some of my favourites are:
[name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] (g/b) - quirky and fun
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] (g/g) - sweet and simple
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] and [name_m]Julian[/name_m] (b/b)
…and some of my least favourites:
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] (g/g) - far too similar, especially when you say them fast
My twin sister and I are called [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] and [name_f]Gretel[/name_f] - I like that they’re not too different, but I’m really glad that they’re not matchy at all.
I would name twins
g/g [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
g/b [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u]
b/b [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] [name_u]Carlisle[/name_u] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_m]David[/name_m]
I have met…
[name_f]Maddison[/name_f] and [name_f]Anabelle[/name_f] (2 years old)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (6 years old)
[name_m]Markus[/name_m] and [name_m]Markel[/name_m] (7 years old)
[name_f]Melissa[/name_f] and [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] (late 20’s)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] (28)
What I might use (all middles are family names)…
B/B: [name_m]Orson[/name_m] Breckinridge and [name_u]Barrett[/name_u] Lapham
B/G: [name_m]Orson[/name_m] Breckinridge and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f]
G/G: [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Eugenia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_u]Britton[/name_u]
My brothers: [name_m]Adam[/name_m] and [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] (parents couldn’t agree so they each picked a name-- ended up being extra cute since they were [name_u]Baby[/name_u] A and [name_u]Baby[/name_u] B)
Cousins: [name_m]Sean[/name_m] and [name_m]Eric[/name_m]
Second cousins: [name_u]Aubrey[/name_u] and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]
Other second cousins: [name_m]Mark[/name_m] and [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]
Great uncles: [name_m]Al[/name_m] and [name_m]Ted[/name_m] (I’m guessing those are nicknames)
Twins I know: [name_f]Kathryn[/name_f] and [name_f]Kailyn[/name_f], [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] and [name_u]Haley[/name_u], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_u]Ryan[/name_u], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] (sp?) and [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Brian[/name_m] and [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] and [name_u]Alex[/name_u], [name_f]Kathy[/name_f] and [name_f]Karen[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and [name_f]Keira[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_u]Allison[/name_u], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_f]Cristina[/name_f]
Triplets: Ch!ma (m), Ch!oma (f) and D!nma (f)
I guess my favorite set is [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and [name_u]Orion[/name_u]? I’m not too passionate about any of them, tbh.
If I had twins:
B/G: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] Belphoebe [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
B/B: [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] and [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_u]August[/name_u]
G/G: [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Lenore[/name_f] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f] Belphoebe [name_f]Alice[/name_f]
I guess my only rule when naming twins would be that the names should have a similar style/compliment each other but that’s about it- I would do the same for all siblings, multiples or not.
@geeknamezyo: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f], really? Is that deliberate or coincidental?
I know a set of twins named [name_f]Inez[/name_f] and [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], like that.
And one [name_f]Pauline[/name_f] and [name_m]Louis[/name_m]. Pretty boring, but well matched.
When I was little, I used to read books about a pair of twins called [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] and [name_f]Thelma[/name_f], always liked that combo!
I wouldn’t name twins differently, either. As previous posters pointed out, they share enough stuff already. In fact, I would probably take extra care to have their names be different enough (although I wouldn’t mind matchy nicknames too much).
I wouldn’t pick names with a big difference in length, but I wouldn’t do that for ‘regular’ siblings either.
