Hmm…I’m not sure. Possibly my most “controversial” naming opinion is that I love nickname-names, but lots of other people do, too!

I really like alliterative names! I’m not sure I have a favorite combo, though.
Do name meanings matter to you?
Yes, definitely! Personal significance usually wins out over etymology for me, but I also love when names have great etymological meanings. And sometimes I use those meanings to derive personal significances!
What’s your opinion on traditionally masculine names for girls, and traditionally feminine names for boys?
I like them! I think I tend to get more excited about the latter, but I really enjoy both. I don’t see any reason to hold strict gender boundaries for names.
Does name popularity influence your name decisions?
Yes and no. I don’t care too much about a name’s ranking, but it sometimes bothers me if I know a lot of people (and thus have a lot of associations) with a particular name. I guess it’s less about where a name is on the charts, and more about how often it shows up in my actual life.
How much do other [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions influence your name decisions?
Less now than they used to, honestly. I really value [name_u]Berry[/name_u] opinions, but I try to mostly use them to confirm names I love rather than rule them out. I definitely take into consideration if someone brings up a tangible concern that I hadn’t thought of, though!
What’s your opinion on using long, (but beautiful), easily mispronounced non-[name_f]English[/name_f] names in an [name_f]English[/name_f]-speaking country?
I love meeting people with interesting names from all sorts of languages! I think it’s super important for [name_f]English[/name_f] speakers to learn how to pronounce non-[name_f]English[/name_f] names when we encounter them so that people don’t have to doubt these kinds of naming decisions.
Do you follow naming trends?
I like a lot of vintage revival type names, so I’ll say yes! I like a fair number of names that are not really “in style” right now too though. So I guess I don’t really follow them on purpose, but I definitely sometimes align!

I then remembered a character on the TV show Goosebumps, which my brother loved as a kid, whose name was [name_f]Tara[/name_f] (when I saw it as a kid, I imagined the spelling [name_f]Terra[/name_f]), and as I remembered this character, I immediately fell in love with that name pronounced with the “air” sound. It’s still my third favorite girls’ name behind [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Cara[/name_f]!
[name_f]Erykah[/name_f] - a really cool trendy alternative spelling of [name_f]Erica[/name_f].
I’m not 100% sure, but my best guess would be [name_f]Tara[/name_f]. I started creating my list once I had over 100 names on it.

Opinions
I like it more than I used to, but I’m still not really a fan of [name_f]Nora[/name_f] (even though I really like [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]). I don’t really like the sound of it.
As far as Berries go, I haven’t really seen much love for [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f], which was in my top 3 at one point and is still in my top 10. [name_f]Katelyn[/name_f] has been a favorite of mine long before I became a name nerd (in fact, for nearly 15 years)! In general, I don’t like that the name [name_f]Karen[/name_f] has been ruined in the last year or so. It’s still on my list, and it was once in my top 20, but I’m not a big fan of the [name_f]Karen[/name_f] meme.
I don’t really take name meanings into consideration when choosing names for my lists (sound is my top priority followed by spelling/look and timelessness), but I do love to know them!
With a few exceptions (such as [name_u]Hayden[/name_u] and [name_f]Teri[/name_f], but especially [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]), I’m not a huge fan of masculine names for girls; however, I love a number of feminine names for boys! Various examples that come to mind are [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_u]Beckett[/name_u], [name_u]Cary[/name_u], [name_u]Eris[/name_u], [name_u]Everette[/name_u], and [name_m]Kellen[/name_m].
Somewhat, but not as much as timelessness.
If a name is hot on Nameberry in threads like The Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] Thread, and it grows on me enough, I’ll eventually add it to my list! (A great example of this is [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] right now, which will probably soon make it to my top 20 boys’ names!)
I do, but relatively casually. I do look at the latest SSA names list every year to see the top 1000 names and add names from it that I like into my list!
Misc.
I’d say [name_f]Emily[/name_f]! I had a friend with this name in kindergarten and I remember really liking it. However, the spark really came to me at the age of eight when my family was on a vacation out west. I heard a supervisor at an exhibit announce through a megaphone that her name was [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and offer her assistance to those who needed it. I then told my parents how much I liked that name, and I eventually had a couple chances to talk to her. I still absolutely love the name today!
I easily prefer The Quick [name_u]Poll[/name_u] Thread; I use it pretty much daily! I love seeing the general vibe of Nameberry and voting in a number of polls whenever I’m short on time. Whenever I want Nameberry’s collective opinion on something, I create a poll on this thread! Sometimes I add names that I see on this thread to my list if I like it enough (or if it gets enough love that it grows on me)!

I think if you are from non-English heritage then it’s beautiful to throw away this assimilation nonsense and insist that English people get with the picture and start learning to pronounce names from other languages (see: Uzo Aduba’s mother’s wisdom - “if they can say Tchaikovsky, they can say Uzoamaka”). However, I think if your heritage is incredibly distant, or if you’re solely from an English-speaking background, you need to be more careful where you’re treading. Check the cultural importance of the name and, if you are going to use it, check you’re getting the pronunciation right! It’s not a long name but way too many baby Saoirses being called ser-sha nowadays
- Do you follow naming trends? Unfortunately I always seem to be about 3-5 years ahead of a boom. I loved Ava, Mae and Luna as a wean, then Audrey, Ezra and Mabel as a teenager, and now I’m accepting Lyra, Kit and Beatrix are going to have to be crossed off too. Fervently hoping this is the last time I have to do this but Nameberry has both my current favourites, Daphne and Guinevere, as next ones to take off so it looks like we’ll be down to my truly unique favourites by the time I have any kids…

Elsinore is a place name in Denmark but it’s mostly known as [name_m]Hamlet[/name_m]’s setting and is rarely used as a person name which may be why they think it’s made up? And yes [name_m]Gwilym[/name_m] is Welsh
