Alternate Spellings Of Rice?

The majority has voted and Rhys cannot be pronounced like Rye with an S. So, now I’m looking for another spelling for Rice.
Thank you to those who answered my previous question, I appreciate your feedback and found it extremely helpful. Please note that I wasn’t trying to butcher the name Rhys, I was just honestly curious as to whether anyone else pronounced it like rice.
So, any spelling suggestions? Any are welcome.

Bonus Question: If I decided to name my character Rhys with the proper pronunciation, would Roman work as a sibling name?

No? Because that’s not how Welsh orthography works. I mean, you can do whatever you want. Nobody’s going to arrest you. But it makes exactly as much sense as pronounced [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] as ant-un-eye would.

I mean, there’s nothing stopping you, but I’d use a different spelling, since [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is the tradition Welsh one

Okay, what are the alternative spellings? I’d totally be willing to use one of them.

@marysia Yes, I suppose you are right there. For some reason, I always pronounced it like [name_u]Rye[/name_u] with an S before realizing that it was pronounced like [name_u]Reese[/name_u]. Would Rys make more sense for the rice pronunciation?

I’ve only known one [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (this spelling) and he pronounced it phonetically. Hard to explain , but kind of like Ryes (the word [name_u]Rye[/name_u] with an S) or the word [name_u]Rise[/name_u]. He was always getting the pronunciation [name_u]Rice[/name_u] and really disliked it. So, you could pronounce it differently but it will create confusion, and it’s also not the traditional way of saying the name.
If you wanted [name_u]Rice[/name_u], I think Rys works (although it looks a little off) or maybe [name_m]Reyes[/name_m], Riyes, or Ries…These are all made up just based on what I think the word [name_u]Rice[/name_u] sounds like though.

I think it’s inappropriate to use a name from another language and butcher the pronunciation. So no. [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] is [name_u]Reese[/name_u].

If you want the rice pronunciation, then I’d maybe go with [name_m]Rhyce[/name_m]. I’ve seen it as an alternative to [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] (with the same pronunciation) but I think it could work. [name_u]Or[/name_u] even [name_m]Ryse[/name_m].

Totally agree with this here 100%

@OctaviaMay Thank you, that is extremely helpful. Made-up spellings are no problem, because this is actually for a character in a book. I was just wondering about [name_u]Rhys[/name_u] because I love the way it looks (love the reese pronunciation, too), but the reese pronunciation doesn’t really fit my character.

Thank you. I actually wasn’t aware that no one else pronounces it like rice. For some reason, I always assumed that was an alternate pronunciation (also how I originally pronounced it). Not trying to be inappropriate or offensive, just wondering, since I know certain names can be pronounced multiple ways (Samuel as sam-ooh-ell or SAHM-WELL, [name_u]David[/name_u] as day-vid or dah-veed).
It’s not meant to be some purposely modern butchering of a traditional name, I promise (I hate those as much as the next person). I was just checking to see if the rice pronunciation was a thing or not. I apologize that I came off as offensive, as I would never purposely do so.

Also, just to hopefully give people something to laugh about, I’m famous for strange mispronunciations of names. Used to see [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] as andro-media (don’t even know how that one happened), [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] as purse-eh-phone, and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] as callie-ope, to name a few. Silly me and my bad eyes and over-literal brain :joy:.

Again, I am sorry. I will definitely use a different spelling.

I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to butcher the pronunciation, just honestly wanted to know if that was a possible pronunciation and if anyone had used it. I wasn’t aware that could come off as offensive. I guess that’s why I asked, just to be sure.

Ryce?
[name_m]Reiss[/name_m]? (via the [name_m]German[/name_m] pn)

[name_m]Reiss[/name_m]? Oh, I love that spelling! Thank you, I wasn’t aware it existed. I think this is what I will go with, as long as it’s okay?

I think so!
(Although I do know that can be pronounced ‘Reece’ too, if that bothers you - but it feels less ‘fixed’ than [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], with it’s traditional spelling - so I think ‘Rice’ would work - unless someone here knows a reason why!)

[name_m]Just[/name_m] typed it alongside his last name and it’s perfect!

So, [name_m]Reiss[/name_m] Edgerly (MNs pending) is his name. Thank you :slightly_smiling_face:!

I’d still assume Rys was pronounced REES - but there’d be more plausible deniability? I wouldn’t want to use a name that sounds like “rice” in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking country, because, well… It sounds like rice :rice:. But I think Ryce would be your best bet if you were really set on it. Like [name_u]Bryce[/name_u] without the B.

I understand  Thank you for being so open about other people’s thoughts as well!

Just throwing it out there that I went to high school with someone whose literal first name was Rice.

What about [name_m]Price[/name_m]? Otherwise I’d go with Ryce

I’d go with [name_m]Ryse[/name_m] or [name_m]Rhyce[/name_m], but I also thought of Ryce!
