Im wondering if [name]Annie[/name] is a proper given name or is it just a nn for [name]Anne[/name]. I would plan on calling my girl [name]Annie[/name] regardless so should she be named [name]Anne[/name] or just go with [name]Annie[/name]?
Thanks!

I would just use [name]Annie[/name]. [name]Annie[/name] has been used on its own for so long that there’s no reason it can’t be considered a name in its own right. [name]Annie[/name] is near the top of my list.
Honestly, nn as given names is, [name]IMO[/name], not a good idea. There may come a day when she would want something more “official”. [name]Annie[/name] is such a natural nn of [name]Anne[/name] that even if you always called her [name]Annie[/name], I still feel you should name her [name]Anne[/name]. [name]Anne[/name] is a beautiful choice- classic, timeless, great namesakes, and can be her “adult” name if she chooses. She may choose to be [name]Annie[/name] the rest of her life, but [name]Anne[/name] is always there.
I would go with [name]Anne[/name] , with nn [name]Annie[/name] . Sometimes when you are an adult a name with a bit of gravitas matters …[name]Anne[/name] has that in bundles.
I know several [name]Annie[/name]'s that are not [name]Anne[/name]. If you don’t plan to ever use [name]Anne[/name], then don’t name her that. [name]Anne[/name] can be a nn for [name]Annie[/name] later.
I’m usually of the opinion that you should give full names even if you plan on calling your child by a nn. My mother was [name]Cathy[/name] and hated it. However, I’ve known a few [name]Annie[/name]'s and I think it’s one of those few nicknames that could work on it’s own.
Because [name]Annie[/name] has been used for so long as a first name, it is probably ok. Personally, I am not a fan of [name]Annie[/name] because it sounds to cutesy for a grown woman. I would go with [name]Anne[/name] or [name]Anna[/name].
I think you should name her [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name] and use the nickname [name]Annie[/name]. [name]Anne[/name]/[name]Anna[/name] ages nicely.
I’d probably go with [name]Anne[/name]. You can pronounce it [name]Annie[/name], there’s an e right at the end.
I agree completely.
I belong to the “no nicknamey given names” school of thought so I’d put [name]Anne[/name] on the birth certificate even if that’s not what you’d be calling her. But I know someone who’s just [name]Annie[/name], not [name]Anne[/name], and she’s a successful optometrist so I doubt her name’s held her back career-wise…
I am an [name]Anne[/name] who is almost always called [name]Annie[/name], and though I might never use [name]Anne[/name], I appreciate that it is there as an option. I love being able to choose between the fun [name]Annie[/name] and the more sophisticated [name]Anne[/name] and be both at once. I would definitely choose [name]Anne[/name] as a given name over [name]Annie[/name] to leave both options open.
Thanks for all the feedback! I agree. [name]Anne[/name] it is! That is, if this wee one’s a girl
I also agree that [name]Anne[/name] might be better. [name]Annie[/name] is an adorable nickname, though! :-). If you don’t love [name]Anne[/name], there are tons of [name]Ann[/name]- names- [name]Anna[/name], [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name], [name]Annika[/name], etc. All of those could yield the nickname [name]Annie[/name]. I really love [name]Annie[/name] :-).
I know plenty of people whose names are [name]Annie[/name]-not [name]Anne[/name]. [name]Anne[/name] is so boring and overused but [name]Annie[/name] is so spunky and much more interesting.
I agree with this, completely. I have a sister named [name]Anne[/name]. Everyone called her [name]Annie[/name] when she was little, but now as an adult she’s known as [name]Anne[/name] - especially in formal situations. People who are close to her still call her [name]Annie[/name], though - myself included.
i have two great grandmothers that were both just annie. i do think, however, she’d appreciate being anne with the NN annie, bc you never know what avenues she’ll take in life.
This is a much more eloquent way than I would have said it- and I agree with her completely! [name]Anne[/name] nn [name]Annie[/name] is a good choice.
i would have to agree dindlee said very well.
[name]Annie[/name] is one of those nicknames that can work on its own. Personally though, I’d go with a more formal name on the birth certificate - I have [name]Anna[/name] nn [name]Annie[/name] on my own list. [name]Even[/name] if she goes by [name]Annie[/name] all her life, she has the formal version to fall back on should she need it.
