Arlowe for a girl?

Okay, I posted about my girls name of choice, [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f], to a baby name reddit and didn’t get as much constructive criticism as hate. Is it really that bad? I really love it, I wanted to name my son [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] but his dad felt that it sounded more feminine, like [name_u]Willow[/name_u] or [name_u]Harlow[/name_u]. So I just made it the top of my girl’s names list.

I don’t particularly like [name_u]Harlow[/name_u] as it sounds and looks like Harlot to me. [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] just isn’t my favorite. Plus I just don’t see the problem with it being a “boys” name. I’ve always liked masculine names on girls.

Additionally, I’m spelling it [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] because it looks more feminine than [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], and Arlow looks unfinished to me. The middle names are [name_f]Jane[/name_f], because I like how [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] sounds and AJ makes an easy nickname, and [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] is an honor name after my MIL.

Another minor issue, I personally have, is my son’s name is [name_u]Arthur[/name_u]. So the names are pretty similar with the Ar- beginning. Idk if that should ruin the name for me or not.

One of the redditors even said [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] reminded them of [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gacy

I’m okay with criticisms, but please be kind about it, but I do hope someone also loves it because I’ve been sitting on this name for years and I’m starting to think I should go with something else.

Honestly, I think it’s more about the people you ask :woman_shrugging:t2: I’ve realized NB folxs are incredibly nice and tend to find like a dozn positives to say instead of a negative. I had Ry@n picked out for a boy and a girl, and the responses were always mixed but wayyyyy nicer on here. I love boy names for girls, and I think Arlo/ Arlow/ [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] is an awesome choice! Don’t let anyone stop you, especially if it’s what you and your so want!!:two_hearts: I also agree that [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] looks very feminine to me.

As noted above Nameberry tends to err on the side of positive. Which can be a good or bad thing if you’re trying to decipher how something might be perceived IRL

I don’t mind the pronunciation of the name but the spelling is throwing me because I think it comes off misspelled to me. For a female, I’d keep thinking it was missing an H or and M. If you really like the sound of the name I’d almost take a chance and save the misspelled assumptions and just go with [name_u]Arlo[/name_u]. The “boys names on girls” isn’t my style personally but I don’t think it’s unheard of at all.

[name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] is very cool and bright and I think the combo works well  the main problem for me is that it is fairly close to [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], but if you don’t mind that, I think it’s a sweet choice

I think [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] sounds and looks really pretty. I think you’d get much more positive feedback in the real world—I find that name communities are very skewed towards traditional spellings and non-surname names.

I would quail at the challenge of saying [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and Arlowe’s names together on a daily basis—I have two M-named children whose names I frequently mix up! But perhaps you’re verbally sharper than me!

I do like the rhythm of [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] better than [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f], if the [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gacy comment is bugging you (that is BRUTAL though, and I don’t think I ever would have made that connection).

I definitely see the issue of being confused constantly with [name_u]Harlow[/name_u] or [name_u]Marlow[/name_u]. Otherwise seems fine.

I think [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] is lovely and can’t see anything wrong with it on its own - however I do think it’s too close to be a sibling with [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] I’m afraid.

I don’t know if this appeals at all but I really like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] as a nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].

If you do decide to go for it, I agree with @LostMargaret that [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] has slightly better flow :slightly_smiling_face:

I actually have [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] on my own personal girl name list. I am a big fan of “boy” names on girls in general, but this one specifically seems to work well because of the similarity to [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] and [name_u]Harlow[/name_u], and even names like Arlet/Scarlet. I’m not big fan of the [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] spelling because it does seem misspelled to me, I think you could get away with just [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] just fine even for a girl. People hear a name way more often than they see it anyway. The [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gacy connection seems really far fetched to me, plus people don’t go by their full name very often so I don’t think it should worry you at all.

I love it!! :sparkling_heart:

[name_u]Arlo[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] was going to be my cousin’s name if he’d been a girl! I’ve always loved it!

I think [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] is lovely. Personally, for myself, I’m not as keen on the extra letters in [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] nor [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] much, but that’s my personal taste for naming my own kids. I think they’re gorgeous as honors and feminizations.

I think that if these are the names for you, then absolutely go for it!!! I think a little girl called [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] would be just peachy.

Gosh some people can be mean! This is why I like nameberry everyone is just lovely

I can completely see the appeal in [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] the name looks visually interesting, feels fashionable and has a modern invented flair which is fun. I like [name_f]Jane[/name_f] teamed with [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] balances out the modern vibe of [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] and the sentiment behind [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] is lovely. If you love the name go for it.

However I do prefer [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] spelling wise I think the ‘we’ feels a bit redundant I think [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] feels more streamlined and recognisable. Also I lean to preferring more feminine ‘princessy’ choices (my daughter is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] complete opposite vibe of Arlowe) so this choice wouldn’t be my first pick. Still that’s just preference is you love [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] go for it!!!

Good luck

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] I love Arlo/Arlowe on a girl! So sweet, spunky and retro. Don’t listen to the haters, people find something wrong with every name.

I think Arlo/ [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] / Arlow is a lovely option ! I see it as completely gender neutral ( but I see most names that way, as we assign gender to items ) . I think it would be a spunky name and a really rocking sib set ! I love the contrast

[name_f]My[/name_f] hesitation would be the similarity to your son Arthur’s name.
If [name_u]Harlow[/name_u] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] aren’t great alternatives ( incase you are still looking for alternatives)
-Elowen

  • [name_u]Arrow[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Lora[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]
  • Finnoula
  • [name_u]Cleo[/name_u]
  • [name_f]Lilou[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Luna[/name_f]
    -Margot / [name_f]Margo[/name_f] / [name_f]Margaux[/name_f]
    ( [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] , [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] might be my favourites)

If [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gacy thing is something you are stuck on maybe switching the names to [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] Jane/ [name_f]Jana[/name_f] / [name_f]Janae[/name_f] / [name_u]Jae[/name_u] / [name_u]Jade[/name_u]

I like it! And love the AJ nn!

I also tend to favor masculine names for girls.

I think the [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] spelling would work for a girl too. I agree Arlow doesn’t work, it looks like arrow to me.

Overall, go for what is the name for you and your partner! I like the double Ar- starts too!

Personally, I don’t think [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] (or any spelling variation) is a common enough name, at least not where I live, that most people would think of it as being strictly masculine, since they probably wouldn’t have much exposure to it to begin with. I know it’s been becoming much more popular recently, but I don’t think it’s something most people are super familiar with at the current moment. I think the [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] spelling makes it clearly feminine and most people wouldn’t bat an eye. I like the full name you mentioned and think it flows very well. I do think the similarity to [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] could be an issue, unfortunately, but if you really love it, I wouldn’t say it’s completely off-limits. I’d just be prepared for a lot of people to assume you made them matchy on purpose.

It’s pretty but love suggested [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] :cherry_blossom::blossom::blossom:

It isnt my style personally but I dont see anything wrong with it. It is a lot like [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] and [name_u]Harlow[/name_u] and I feel like if people met a little [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] in real life they wouldnt even bat an eye at it.

As for the [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] Gacy thing, the only similarities the names have is rhyming…they’re really pretty unrelated…it’d be like saying ‘I cant name my baby [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] [name_u]Perry[/name_u] because it rhymes with Very Hairy…’ which seems silly to me

I don’t love it personally but I think it’s okay. [name_f]My[/name_f] main hesitation would be the similarity to your son’s name. They’re too close for my taste & I’d only consider using names that close if the plan is to primarily call her AJ. However, I’ve known siblings with names much closer than [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] & [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] so probably it would be okay.

If you’re look for another choice, maybe:

[name_f]Arlana[/name_f] (I feel like the extra syllable helps distinguish it just a bit more)

[name_f]Amara[/name_f]

[name_f]Zara[/name_f]

Mauryn (MARR - in)

[name_u]Dara[/name_u]

[name_u]Carlin[/name_u]

I think it’s pretty! I like the flow of [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] [name_f]Stacie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] too, if that particular comment is bothering you.
[name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation would be how close [name_f]Arlowe[/name_f] is to Arthur-- for me, they’d be too close.
