Baby Sister for Rue in 6 Weeks! Please Help!

Hello berries!

Please help a mama out! My husband and I are expecting our second baby girl on [name_u]June[/name_u] 12th, and we haven’t finalized the name yet. It’s totally stressing me out! So here are the details:

We have a one year old daughter named [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f] [name_m]Loy[/name_m]. My mom’s name is [name_f]Anne[/name_f] [name_m]Loy[/name_m], so it was mostly an honor name. We call [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f] just [name_u]Rue[/name_u] about 90% of the time.

Our last name rhymes with Brokebell, begins with an O, and contains a tree name.

We are totally set on calling this baby [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as a nickname and giving her a longer and more serious full name. We like the middle name [name_u]Auden[/name_u], but we would consider other middles if a first name we loved didn’t work with it.

The problem is we can’t decide on a full name that meets all of our naming criteria: matches well with [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f], sounds good with our last name, serious, uncommon but not unheard of.

Here are our top contenders

  1. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] (we actually settled on this one awhile ago but I chickened out because 1. A flower first name and a tree last name? 2. Hunger Games galore 3. Too frilly for a grown-up? DH still really loves this name)

  2. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (we kind of find this name boring and too safe but it does meet all our criteria)

  3. [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] (DH thinks people would call her [name_u]Phil[/name_u]. Not cute. I’m afraid people would mispronounce)

  4. [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] (big name. Again with mispronunciation?)

  5. [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] (I like this one, DH not so much. Nickname [name_f]Posy[/name_f] would be quite a stretch)

Names we have dismissed that lead to [name_f]Posy[/name_f]:
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]- too popular
[name_f]Mariposa[/name_f]- swear word in Spanish
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamond[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f]- no more R names
Any flower names for same reasons as [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
No S or K
[name_f]Petrova[/name_f]
[name_f]Phyllis[/name_f], [name_f]Phillipa[/name_f], [name_f]Phyllida[/name_f]
[name_f]Pauline[/name_f], [name_f]Paulina[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Polly[/name_f] (we do like these names but they’re too short and cute to be replaced by [name_f]Posy[/name_f])

Before we decided on [name_f]Posy[/name_f], we considered [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] ([name_f]Hattie[/name_f]), [name_f]Millicent[/name_f] or [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] ([name_f]Millie[/name_f]), and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] ([name_f]Lola[/name_f]).

Our boy name for this baby was [name_m]Whitman[/name_m] [name_m]Arthur[/name_m].

We would love to hear some feedback on our top names! Are [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] and [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] too clunky? Is [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] appropriate for a police officer or a doctor? Any new name suggestions would be appreciated as well! Thank you!!!

Hmmm…I think to use [name_f]Posy[/name_f]/[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] with [name_u]Rue[/name_u] your going to have to be ok with the Hunger Games trilogy and not second guess it. I like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] makes sense as a nn.

I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f] as sisters the best. If you intend to call her [name_f]Posy[/name_f] 90% of the time like [name_u]Rue[/name_u] then I would go with this one.

I also like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] but I get why you have eliminated them from your list. Though [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Posy[/name_f] doesn’t bother me.

I think it just makes sense to use [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. The others are way more of a stretch then I ever would really think to get [name_f]Posy[/name_f] from. I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] the best and next to [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f] I don’t think it seems safe at all. I think they are very stylistically similar. [name_f]Posy[/name_f] and [name_u]Rue[/name_u] are super cute together

By the way I have a niece named [name_f]Filomena[/name_f] and people call her Filly. But she also doesn’t have an established nickname like [name_f]Posy[/name_f] would be.

I completely agree!

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is really cute. I can’t think of another name to get you to [name_f]Posy[/name_f] besides the ones you’ve disqualified. There’s definitely a Hunger Games association, but if you use [name_f]Posy[/name_f] all the time, people will eventually forget about it.

What about Persphone
Or Poisetta?

What about [name_f]Josepha[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]? [name_f]Josepha[/name_f] [name_u]Auden[/name_u] sounds nice and [name_f]Josepha[/name_f] seems not quite as expected as [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

I do like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. [name_f]Portia[/name_f]? I am not a fan of [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], it is the “prim” part that makes me dislike the name.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]… Nickname [name_u]Josie[/name_u] or [name_u]Jo[/name_u].

I also agree exactly with this reply and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] would get my final vote.

Sidenote…I thought [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f] meant butterfly and that’s always what I think of when I hear this name, but I suppose it doesn’t matter because it is just too stylistically different from [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f] anyway.

I like Phillippa as a name, it might be a stretch to get [name_f]Posy[/name_f] in there but [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] is also a cute nickname! If you like [name_f]Posy[/name_f] you might also like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]

I prefer either [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

There’s also [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]

[name_f]Zipporah[/name_f]
[name_u]Penrose[/name_u]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]
[name_f]Apolline[/name_f]
Poinsettia
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephina[/name_f]
[name_f]Sephora[/name_f]

Here’s an idea, not sure if it’s a good one…
What if you named her any name you like that starts with a P and then gave her the middle name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. For example, [name_f]Priscilla[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] nn [name_f]Posey[/name_f]? I think posey really feels like a stretch to me for anything except [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], but if [name_f]Posey[/name_f] was derived from both a first and middle name I would think it was cute, clever and made sense!

I think [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is a great option. It’s stylistically similar to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Philomena[/name_f], definitely makes [name_f]Posey[/name_f] less of a stretch, is prettier than [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f] and more unique than [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

Definitely [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]. Theodosa and [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f] dont sound particularly feminine to me and are a bit too much. At least you can shorten [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] to Prim…which is a cute endearing name. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is everywhere at the moment and overrated.

What about [name_f]Josepha[/name_f] or [name_u]Penrose[/name_u]? [name_f]Josepha[/name_f] makes [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] more unique and [name_u]Penrose[/name_u] has all the same qualities as [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] but without the second Hunger Games connection (which imo is too much)

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice so far! Sounds like most people think we should go with [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. After considering all the comments and our feelings about the names we are actually leaning toward [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] with an S middle name and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as the nickname still. It’s a name we both like but rejected because we felt it was too short to nickname, but I think we were grasping at straws to choose a name that would give us [name_f]Posy[/name_f] and were heading toward choosing a first name that neither one of us liked just for that reason. Our hobby is birdwatching, so we love the bird connection of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. Plus, it’s not terribly common and sounds nice with [name_f]Ruthanne[/name_f]. It’s not as little-girlish as [name_f]Polly[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] but still has a sweetness to it. We aren’t sure yet on the S middle name. We would like something longer than 5 letters and possibly a surname like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. We also saw the name [name_f]Evrose[/name_f] last night while searching around. I would prefer Everose but I think people might mistake it for [name_f]Eve[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Besides Everose is pretty much a made up name, and I don’t think we are comfortable with that. I liked that the name included [name_f]Rose[/name_f], though. We like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but not on it’s own because it is simply too popular especially as a middle name. Middle name suggestions?

I like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] to get [name_f]Posy[/name_f] as a nickname. If you don’t want to use [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] because it’s a flower I wouldn’t worry about it because a [name_f]Posy[/name_f] is a flower, too.

I’m a big fan of [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] (bird name  ) , which lends itself to [name_f]Posy[/name_f] especially with an S middle. But since you already both like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - great name! - that would be a wonderful option. If [name_f]Rose[/name_f] feels too ubiquitous in the middle, maybe you’d like [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosina[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Rhoda[/name_f], [name_f]Rosetta[/name_f].

S middles, longer than 5 letters, possibly surname-y:
[name_u]Spencer[/name_u]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_u]Simone[/name_u]
[name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_u]Sydney[/name_u]
[name_u]Skylar[/name_u] or [name_u]Schuyler[/name_u]
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]
[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_u]Sinclair[/name_u]
[name_u]Silver[/name_u]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]
[name_u]Sweeney[/name_u]

I’ve never run into [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f] as a swear in Spanish, though I have heard it as a kind of double entendre or pejorative (like “fairy” used to be in English, I guess?). So that seems like a legit reason to strike it from your list.
