Brett for a girl?

[name_u]Beck[/name_u] is so cute!

No. There’s unisex names and then there is naming your daughter a male name. Could [name_u]Maria[/name_u] or [name_f]Emma[/name_f] work for a boy? Most people in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] would say ā€œAbsolutely not!ā€ When in fact, in some countries these names, [name_u]Maria[/name_u] especially, are considered unisex!

I can see the appeal of the name though with names like [name_f]Bette[/name_f] (as in Midler), [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Brynn[/name_f], etc. But then again, names do evolve over time, especially with literary or celebrity connections. Look at [name_u]Scout[/name_u] for instance! And I did see a post once about someone asking if [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] could work for a boy so maybe eventually a name will just be a name!

I would not want to be named [name_u]Brett[/name_u] for pretty much all the reasons people listed above. I could see it being incredibly difficult in the long wrong and maybe annoying with a likelihood of hearing regularly ā€œOh I thought that you would be a boy with that name.ā€

I think it works wonderfully!!

I can’t say I like it for a boy either but for a girl it feels a little harsh. I feel like unlike [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] or [name_u]James[/name_u] it’s too masculine. [name_m]Orson[/name_m] [name_m]Welles[/name_m] named his daughter [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and I think later in life she wrote something indicating she never really warmed up to that choice! I feel like this could be the same result for your daughter and I’m not sure I’d personally risk that

I think it could work, but [name_u]Brett[/name_u] makes me picture an unpleasant frat guy.

Personally I think it sounds ADORABLE, but I would use it as a nickname to [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] or [name_u]Britton[/name_u].

I think it’s really dated on a boy but for a girl it feels very fresh! I think it sounds quite sweet and spunky, similar to [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_u]Marley[/name_u], [name_u]Murphy[/name_u] or [name_u]Lane[/name_u] feel. It has a beach-y, sunny surfer vibe to it for me

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! It’s been on my girl list since I was a teen watching [name_u]Brett[/name_u] Somers on Match Game reruns.

I think it works. Is it a tad masculine leaning? Yes. But I agree with others, it’s a bit fresher on a girl.

With others, Britta, Bernadette, Britton, or Briar. But I think Brett on her own works.

I know one in his 40s, one college aged - both males. And then the female references already made, plus one! That I hope is helpful - I recently read that country singer Luke Bryan and his wife Caroline had a niece named Brett that passed away. It was Caroline’s brother’s daughter and she started a foundation, Brett’s Barn, in her honor. More info here https://brettsbarn.com/, that to me confirms it works for a girl!

Personally I knew a lot of boys named [name_u]Brett[/name_u] going through school so it’s very masculine to me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it could work for a girl. I think if a girl were to introduce herself as [name_u]Brett[/name_u] though many people may ask if it’s [name_u]Britt[/name_u], or [name_f]Bette[/name_f] just out of expectations

I like it as a double name, such as, [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_u]Brett[/name_u] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Brett[/name_u]

I don’t like it (for a girl, or a boy for that matter) for the reasons everyone else listed above.
I have known a girl [name_u]Brit[/name_u] before.

I think it could work :woman_shrugging:t3: kind of cool

[name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_u]Barrett[/name_u], Barrette, [name_f]Betsy[/name_f] could be other similar ones

I like it ! It reminds me of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_u]Brett[/name_u] from [name_f]Chicago[/name_f] [name_u]Fire[/name_u] !

I think of it as male, but know that it can be female too. It is a harsher sound than I like for either gender, but it can certainly be used.

I’ve never met a man called [name_u]Brett[/name_u] (it’s not a common name in my community) so for me it could go either way.

No, it’s really harsh to me.

It doesn’t help that it means ā€œplankā€ in [name_m]German[/name_m].

Sorry!

I like it a lot and isn’t dated just vintage before fancy lasses make it happen?

Sounds masculine to me, unless there is a logical way to get there from a feminine name. Perhaps, [name_f]Brynn[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f], nicknamed [name_u]Brett[/name_u]. OR…
[name_f]Brielle[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
[name_f]Brittan[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
[name_f]Brittany[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
[name_f]Bronwen[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
[name_f]Briony[/name_f] [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
