[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Second and final post of the day, I promise! I’ve been thinking quite a bit lately about [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and how I like them both for different reasons. I get a spunky, sweet vibe from [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. Personally, I prefer [name_f]Kate[/name_f] with names like [name_f]Molly[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], and [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. I prefer [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with names like [name_f]Greta[/name_f] and [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]. What are your thoughts? Which one do you prefer? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a stand-alone first name? It’s growing on me because I think it works well with some of my other favorites, but I’m unsure because I don’t usually care for one-syllable names as first names, with a few exceptions.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] is a name that I would use as a middle name or or as the second part of a first and middle combination that can be used together if she wants to go by both names. I don’t necessarily want to think of this as a double name anymore because I don’t want one part of the name to rely on the other to work well. So I think if I do decide to use a double name, I’ll do it without I hyphen.
I’m sorry that this post is all over the place! Any thoughts, opinions, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!

I prefer [name_f]Kate[/name_f] with longer first names or as a second name of a hyphenated name and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with shorter first names or a short middle name. For me [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is either a middle name, a nickname, or a second part of a hyphenated name.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps

I love [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. personally I would use [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f] and spell it [name_f]Cait[/name_f], but both are lovely and I would use both in a heart beat.

I don’t like it for a baby because it is overdone and don’t know if I like the meaning of pure.

I love both!
I actually have both within my family tree on my mother’s side. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum’s cousin is just [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (to honour a [name_f]Katarzyna[/name_f] within our family who is a very special lady) and my mum’s niece (my cousin) is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] again honouring the [name_f]Katarzyna[/name_f] within our family. As a result I see the names very differently sometimes struggling to see [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] I feel is more polished, sophisticated and I feel oozes elegance. [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] has a regal charm and I think visually has a very princess feel. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin is known as just [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and I love that she’s just [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. However I do really like the nicknames attached especially the very cool girl option of [name_u]Kit[/name_u]. I feel [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] works with [name_f]Greta[/name_f] but I feel isn’t that connected to [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]. I would be surprised to see [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] with [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
Moving onto [name_f]Kate[/name_f] she’s gorgeous really spunky, bright, nostalgic and fun. I really love [name_f]Kate[/name_f]! I think she’s full of fun. Very sweet name. I would love to find a sibling set consisting of [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] & [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] gosh that would be dreamy.
Personally I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is more you but both are lovely!

I like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - elegant but sweet and sharp. [name_u]Strong[/name_u] and solid and classic but still with a bit of kick. I like how it gives you multiple nicknames and versatility.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] is snappy and cool but with substance too. As a double name -Kate could make some interesting names too!

@_Bright_Blue_Light Thank you so much! I agree with you. I am loving [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a middle name and as the second part of a double name. As I said, [name_f]Kate[/name_f] is growing on me as a name by itself, but I don’t know that I’m as sold on that as I am on using [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a middle or as the second half of a double name. So much to think about! This was so helpful,
Thank you again!

@coolauntieviolet Thank you so much! [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f] nn. [name_f]Cait[/name_f] is beautiful too! I love how there are so many different ways the name can be used, it’s so versatile. And it’s fun to hear about all the things people like and dislike about names in general. That’s why Nameberry is great!
Thank you again!

@Victory55 Thank you so much! I completely understand what you mean! I didn’t like the meaning for a long time. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that when meanings are vague, they are open to interpretation. So I’ve reframed the meaning of [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] for myself If I am lucky enough to have a daughter someday, I want her to have a good and pure heart, and to rejoice in service to [name_m]God[/name_m] and to others. For me, giving my child a name like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] or [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is an unspoken challenge within myself to raise her well.
You have helped me to love the idea even more!
Thank you again!

As a [name_f]Cathryn[/name_f] NN [name_f]Cat[/name_f], I love [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f], but could obviously never use them as a first name. I like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as the second part of a double barrel or as a middle name. I wouldn’t use it as a stand alone first name. I’ve honestly not met that many Katherine/Catherine/Kathryns in my lifetime (in my 30s) And I’ve never met another [name_f]Cathryn[/name_f]. It’s classic and lovely, so even if it is a little popular it’s not trendy.

@tori101 Thank you so much! I absolutely love the names and naming traditions within your family, they are so beautiful, and I’m grateful that you’re willing to share about them in your threads and replies. Thank you for that too.
I also love that your cousin is just [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. There are a few names I like, and if I used them, my child would go by the full name more often than not. Off the top of my head, [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is one of them.
I do agree that [name_f]Kate[/name_f] feels more like me than [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] does, so I’m feeling like it’s more likely that I will use that. I’m also still leaning toward using it as a middle or the second half of a double name. Butt seeing your suggestion of [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] has me second-guessing that!

Thank you again!

@Greyblue Thank you so much! [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is incredibly versatile, and I love it for that reason! Now that I see your suggestions with the hyphen again, I am not fully convinced to go without one like I was when I first posted. I won’t force my child to go by both names if she didn’t want to, no matter how her name was written. I do like the fact that the hyphen ore style that the name is written in can clarify the fact that the names go together.
Of your suggestions, my favorites are:
Eva-Kate
Tessa-Kate
Romy-Kate
Lola-Kate

@benton_s_mama Thank you so much! I love that you like your name! I like the spelling too! I agree that [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Kate[/name_f] are popular but not trendy. I’m in my late 20’s and I’ve met a few Katherines of various ages, and it works beautifully on all of them. I don’t know anyone who is just [name_f]Kate[/name_f] though. I don’t know them well enough to let that discourage me from using either name.
What did cause me to hesitate for a while though is that I have an aunt whose middle name is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. (She goes by a variation of that rather than her first name.) it wouldn’t bother me at all if she thought my child was named in honor of her. I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] are popular enough that it wouldn’t necessarily be an obvious honor. We have a very large family on my mom’s side. I’m trying to limit the honor names I want to use to avoid potential jealousy among my aunts and uncles. So I would just use one of the names because I like how they sound with so many other names!
Thank you again!

@sammaegre Thank you so much! It is starting to grow on me. I love the simplicity of it by itself, but I don’t know if I’m brave enough to pull it off!

I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] matches well with the names you wrote except [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], which sounds more made-up as a first name and modern. [name_f]Kate[/name_f] with the other three names all make me think of late 1800s or early 1900s girls who live on a farm or countryside and like playing in the fields and woods, picking flowers and berries, having picnics, and wear gingham or calico dresses.
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] sounds very versatile in my opinion, since it is such a classic, traditional name in multiple languages, so I think it matches [name_f]Greta[/name_f] well. Certainly not “Sunday”. I really can’t see any connection whatsoever… Is there some reference that I’m missing? [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is very classic and mature and could be from any time period but “Sunday” isn’t even a name and sounds like exclusively a 1930s cartoon/comic character or a celebrity name.

@Nina_Alexandra_2005 Thank you so much! I love the imagery you described for the names I paired with [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. I think you’re right about [name_f]Sienna[/name_f]. I love the name, and think it is beautiful, but I don’t think I can see myself actually using it as much as I can envision some of the others.
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] is just a name I’ve loved for a long time because it brings me joy! I’ve questioned it for a while though, because as a build and change my list, I’ve realized that the majority of the girls’ names I like are classics with a little twist or spunk. I haven’t been ready to let go of [name_f]Sunday[/name_f], but maybe now is the time to let it go. As much as I love the name, and love a mismatched subset, it does bother me that [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] seems to be the outlier that stands out most obviously among my other favorites. Maybe I can find a name that gives me the same joy and positivity that [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] does. [name_u]Ivy[/name_u]? [name_u]Sasha[/name_u]? [name_f]Audrey[/name_f]? [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]? (a couple of my other top favorites!) What are your thoughts on these names as alternatives to [name_f]Sunday[/name_f]? I’d love to hear any suggestions you may have?
Thank you again!

Normally I would prefer [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] with [name_f]Kate[/name_f] as a nickname but one of my friends has a daughter named [name_f]Kate[/name_f], and I actually think it’s a strong enough name on its own.

@Sailor22 Thank you so much! I love that your friend has a daughter who is [name_f]Kate[/name_f] with no “formal” name.
[name_f]Kate[/name_f] by itself is so sweet and is really growing on me.
Thank you again!

I don’t like [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] but I love [name_f]Kate[/name_f] in it’s own right. It’s strong, simple, feminine, sweet on a little one but elegant on a lady. It also makes a great middle or second part of a hyphenation, eg Mary-Kate, Emmy-Kate. I prefer on its own as either a first or middle
