Can you have a "reverse nickname"?

Hey berries!

Silly question, but is it really weird to give your child a short name, but occasionally call them by a long, fancy name just for fun? The example on my mind is Marie, but sometimes calling her by her “princess name,” Marianela. I am curious to see other people’s opinion on this!

I know someone whose name is Lily, and she says that sometimes her mom calls her Lilith just for fun, or when she’s in minor trouble

I love reverse nicknames! I don’t think there’s anything strange about them, it might raise some eyebrows if people found out that “Elizabeth is actually long for Ellie” but among friends/family it’s great. Some standouts for me are a friend Lilly who we called Lilliana and a boy I babysat named Bram who we jokingly called Bramothy.

not weird at all! i think it works especially well when the nickname is frilly or uncommon/“made up” - [name_u]Marie[/name_u] “Marianela” is a great example of this (and it’s really lovely too!)

[name_f]My[/name_f] youngest sister and one of my cousins have “reverse” nicknames like this (i.e. Ch3yenne - Ch3yangelica & Apr!l - Apr!lella). Where I’m from its actually pretty common, if not more so, to have a longer pet name. Most are just used affectionately, but my sister and my cousin do both use their longer “nicknames” in everyday life. I think its not something thats likely to stick as anything other than pet form as most people nickname to shorten the name to make it easier as compared to just being affectionate.

I love “reverse nicknames”! I know a little [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (that’s her full name) and call her [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] as a nickname.

I also know a [name_u]Billy[/name_u] (not short for William) that everyone calls [name_u]William[/name_u] or “Billiam” as a silly nickname.

i don’t think it’s weird - but i don’t think it’s very likely to stick outside of close family. if that doesn’t bother you, why not

it’s pretty common where i’m from (for example i know a maria who goes by marinina quite often) but i think that’s due to linguistic differences

Oh, I also know a Jathan, and his friends call him Jathaniel all the time (like Nathan and Nathaniel, only his name is Jathan)

[name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Lily[/name_f], and my friends call me [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] (or even the smushed Lilithian) to be silly sometimes

I think reverse nicknames are cute! One of my favorites is Mariska for Mari

I have a friend with a nickname-sounding name (ends in y) and sometimes we’ll lengthen it for dramatic effect! It’s really funny but definitely meant as a joke. I think it works as less of a joke though too - seems like lots of fun to me!

Sure! This is a really cute idea! I’m trying to think if I know anyone who’s got nicknames like this…

Okay, here’s what I’ve come up with!
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] (my sister) is sometimes called [name_f]Violeta[/name_f]. I (Hazel) am sometimes called Hazabelle by a good friend of mine. I’m addition, I’ve had cousins and friends with the following names that I’ve elongated, but they aren’t necessarily fancy. More fun.
[name_u]Grey[/name_u] — Grey-Grey
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] — Soph-a-loaf

Nope not weird! It’s the same thing with my dad, his name is [name_m]Omar[/name_m] and as a nn he’s sometimes called [name_u]Omari[/name_u] and [name_m]Omarion[/name_m]. Same thing with my friends, my friend [name_f]Lily[/name_f] I call [name_f]Lilita[/name_f] and [name_f]Lila[/name_f] I call [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] sometimes. I think it’s fun and sweet, it feels more intimate than something expected like a [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] nn [name_m]Luke[/name_m]

I don’t think that’s weird! A lot of one syllbale names commonly have longer nicknames (Grace → [name_f]Gracie[/name_f], [name_u]George[/name_u] → Georgie) so it’s not uncommon, and I think elaborations of short names are fun and sweet!

I think it’s endearing. I love this approach to nicknames. Marianela is so cute. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Of course you can! Nicknames are used out of affection, not necessarily always to “shorten” a name. [name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s name is only three letters long and both of the nicknames my family uses for him are five letters long. [name_f]Every[/name_f] nickname is cute!

It could work, but probably only for family and close friends. I don’t think it would stick otherwise.

We do a similar thing with our [name_m]Barnabas[/name_m] sometimes. We often call him by his middle name, Húni. At some point our oldest son started calling him Húnröður (a pretty rare and archaic Icelandic name) just for fun, because it was a name he heard somewhere, and somehow it stuck and we still use it at times. It makes absolutely no sense to other people

We called my sister [name_f]Cassie[/name_f] [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], Cassandra-diddly-andra and Allacassandra fairly often! Usually at home and just for fun (obviously in the case of the last two)! It totally makes sense to me. I also have a longer nn that comes from my nn and shortenings of that nn too…gonna have to explain that I think:
[name_u]Del[/name_u] (nn for my full name) :arrow_right: [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] :arrow_right: [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]

Our [name_m]Job[/name_m] is forever [name_u]Joby[/name_u] to us.

[name_f]My[/name_f] friend group did this. It started with jokingly calling a girl named [name_f]Beth[/name_f] “Bethany”, and expanded to [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] being “Sophia”, [name_f]Emily[/name_f] being “Emilia” and [name_u]Jae[/name_u] being “Jason”, along with silly extensions to surnames and names which are not nicknames already (think [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] to “Evelynda”)
