Captain

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_m]Captain[/name_m] as a first name? My fiancé loves obscure names and recently loved the idea of [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (as in Harkness from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who). It’s a name I could live with and compared to his other suggestions (like Beastman, and yes he’s serious) it’s relatively tame. It just still sounds like a title to me. Any one else feel this way?
And he’s not an 18 year old kid who will grow out of it unfortunately. He’s an accountant in his 30’s and still regrets that his dad didn’t go with his first name choice for him and name him [name_u]Blaze[/name_u] Cosmos instead of [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] [name_m]Joel[/name_m].

There was a character on a tv show called Greek who was named Cappy, with no explanation for what it stood for. At the end of the series it was finally explained that it was short for [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Paul[/name_m].

It was seen as a joke there and the character was embarrassed by it. I don’t think it’s a good idea.

No. [name_m]Just[/name_m] no. I mean yeah it’s funny and maybe your husband thinks it’s cool and fun to tell all his friends. But it’s a human you’re naming who has to introduce himself with that name for his whole life. [name_u]Blaze[/name_u] would be okay, [name_m]Captain[/name_m] is not.

[name_m]Captain[/name_m] is a title for me. I’ve met Bishops, Deacons, and even a [name_m]Major[/name_m], but all these still feel like titles and [name_m]Captain[/name_m] does even more so.

Have you thought about using your hubby’s would-be name or a variation? [name_u]Blaze[/name_u]/[name_u]Blaise[/name_u] (I prefer the latter) is a nice choice. Or even a play on the mn, [name_m]Cosimo[/name_m]/[name_m]Cosmo[/name_m].

Good luck!

I love [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] Harkness as much as anyone… but I can’t endorse [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. I would even rather see Harkness as a given name, if [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is just too plain for him.

Edited for privacy.

[name_u]Blaze[/name_u] is my son’s middle name from a previous relationship. Maybe I can convince him of Harkness or [name_m]Boe[/name_m], although Stormegeddon is now in his list of names. I need to get him out of the fantasy realm where names are concerned.

#2 and #9 in particular. ESPECIALLY #9, which is Think about the kid and not yourself. Might help him realize that your child is the only one who will have to grow up with this name, put this name on college applications and job applications, etc.

My husband always jokes that it would be awesome to name a son [name_m]Doctor[/name_m]. He brings it up a lot though…at least I hope he is joking! I agree, most title names are off limits, and could be a lot for the child to live up to!

Someone asked this question not long ago.

I’m all for word names, but titles never seem like a good idea. What if the child grows up to be just that, a captain on the police force or in the military? [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Captain[/name_m] is rather cringeworthy.

What about a name that could provide the nickname “[name_m]Cap[/name_m],” like [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] or Carpenter?

If he only wants [name_m]Captain[/name_m] for the [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] Who reference, maybe try some other, less out there options from the show:
[name_m]David[/name_m] / [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] / [name_m]Matthew[/name_m] / [name_m]Smith[/name_m] / Tennant - depending on his favorite doctor
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] - for the centurion companion
Aridian / Dulcian / Fenric / Tharil - creatures from the show
[name_m]Oswald[/name_m] - [name_f]Clara[/name_f]'s last name
[name_m]Ianto[/name_m] / [name_u]Owen[/name_u] - other members of the Torchwood team
[name_m]Wilfred[/name_m] - [name_f]Donna[/name_f]'s grandfather who believed in aliens before she did
Adric - coolest companion name, but he’s from [name_m]Doctor[/name_m] #5 so your hubs may not be familiar with him

I also agree with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] that [name_u]Storm[/name_u] could be a cool name and a nice compromise, and he could get that adorable Stormageddon onesie that floats around the interwebs

I am seconding ollieollie’s suggestion of using [name_u]Blaze[/name_u]/[name_u]Blaise[/name_u]. I think that [name_m]Captain[/name_m] is too much of a title.

It’s too much of a title - especially considering, as others have stated, what if he IS a captain of some sort someday?
What about:
[name_u]Storm[/name_u] [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m]
[name_u]Storm[/name_u] Harkness
Harkness [name_u]Storm[/name_u]
Harkness [name_m]Cosimo[/name_m]
[name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] [name_u]Storm[/name_u]
[name_m]Boe[/name_m] Harkness
Harkness [name_u]Blaise[/name_u]/[name_u]Blaze[/name_u]
[name_m]Cosimo[/name_m] [name_u]Blaise[/name_u]/[name_u]Blaze[/name_u]
You could use “[name_m]Captain[/name_m]” as a nickname, especially with Harkness.
Perhaps another compromise could be [name_m]Captain[/name_m] as a middle.
i.e.
[name_m]Boe[/name_m] [name_m]Captain[/name_m]
[name_m]Cosimo[/name_m] [name_m]Captain[/name_m]

I would not blink or cringe at [name_m]Captain[/name_m]. I have met a man in his 50’s named [name_m]Cap[/name_m], which is nice (maybe it’s short for [name_m]Captain[/name_m], who knows). I don’t know the television association that others are making though, so I can’t speak for that. Someone else was asking about this name not long ago and I recommended [name_m]Commodore[/name_m], which is a really fun name. Definitely run it by your husband.

When my parents were first married they had a cat that they named [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Kipper[/name_m]. I think that’s adorable but for a human: I’m normally all for unusual names but I don’t like this. As others have said, what if he was an actual captain in later life? It’d be like [name_m]Major[/name_m] [name_m]Major[/name_m] [name_m]Major[/name_m] [name_m]Major[/name_m] from Catch 22.

Some of the suggestions for alternatives are much better.

Going against the crowd here, but I don’t think it’s half bad. I think it would totally fit in with [name_m]Deacon[/name_m]'s, [name_m]Bishop[/name_m]'s, [name_m]Fisher[/name_m]'s, etc. It isn’t really my style, but I think it is still fine.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] a note: [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] = [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_f]Sparrow[/name_f]… not the best connotation imo.

Also, would he be willing to name your son [name_u]Blaze[/name_u]? That is more widely excepted these days…
