Catherine

Today I had some thoughts on one of my long-time girl’s favorites: [name]Catherine[/name]. Some people have told me they think it’s too common/boring, but I think it’s a classic. I like this spelling the best, and if I were to use it I wouldn’t “plan” on a nickname but rather let it come about as time goes on (if one does; personally I like the name best in full but I wouldn’t have any problems with it being shortened if that works out better).

What do you think of it?
Combo ideas? (Right now my favorites are [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Rose[/name]; [name]Rose[/name] in my case would not just be a “filler” since it’s a family name.)
Since some people see it as a “common” name, do you think it would be odd to later have a sibling with a more unusual name? ETA: If you want an idea of some of the other names I like, at the URL below is a fairly recent thread where I posted about creating combos from some of my favorites.

I like [name]Catherine[/name], and this is my favorite spelling (along with [name]Katharine[/name]). I admit that I find it a bit dull, but it’s such a timeless classic that it’ll serve any child well. I think using [name]Catherine[/name] in full, without a nickname, would work out fine-- I know multiple C/Katherines who go by just [name]Catherine[/name]/[name]Katherine[/name]. Combos:

[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Helena[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Lucille[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Rosemarie[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Isabel[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Guinevere[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Isadora[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Ginevra[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Lydia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Clementine[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Adele[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Seraphina[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Diana[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Theresa[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Violet[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Annabel[/name]

I also think it can go with pretty much any sibling-- I mean, obviously not [name]Payton[/name], [name]Sloane[/name], [name]Nevaeh[/name], [name]Kayleigh[/name], etc-- because it’s so versatile.

I love [name]Catherine[/name]! One of the names my mom considered naming me or a second daughter was [name]Mary[/name] [name]Catherine[/name], called by both names. I think that’s a very sweet combination and I think it kinda spices [name]Catherine[/name] up. All the Catherines I know go by [name]Cate[/name] or [name]Cathy[/name] but I think it can stand alone just fine. It’s definitely a classic. If I had to pick a sibling name, I would follow the classics route, only because I love classics together. As for middle names, I like [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] a lot but my personal favorite is [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Alyssa[/name], which is kinda an odd combination! Good luck and I hope this helps!

One of my daughters is [name]Katharine[/name] [name]Rose[/name] both are family names. Initially we named her [name]Katharine[/name] to get to [name]Kate[/name]. But really we’ve used many of the [name]Katharine[/name] nns - [name]Katie[/name], [name]Kate[/name], [name]Kat[/name], [name]Kit[/name]. My daughter’s favorite is when I call her [name]Kit[/name] [name]Kat[/name]. Well, she started a ballet class last month and since there was another [name]Kate[/name] in the class I told the ballet teacher to call her [name]Katharine[/name]. Additionally she’s been to the doctor’s office a bunch lately where she’s been called [name]Katharine[/name]. And you know I’ve been calling her [name]Katharine[/name] now. It’s awesome b/c she’s nearly 3 and I’ve suddenly fallen in love with her full name.

[name]Catherine[/name] is a classic. It may have been a common name 40 years ago but the name pool is a lot larger now, so it’s not that common. I have not met a [name]Catherine[/name] under the age of 25 (although I’m sure there are plenty out there).
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Anne[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Irene[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Simone[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Joan[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Alaine[/name]

I have recently come to love [name]Catherine[/name]. Here are some combinations I like:

[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Theodora[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Frances[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Susannah[/name]

My sister’s name is [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Irene[/name] so I’m biased. It’s a timeless classic that never goes out of style. I love the pp’s suggestion of [name]Mary[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]. [name]Mary[/name] is not chosen too much by today’s parents so choosing this combination would be practically revolutionary!!! Ha  The middle name is the place you can spice it up. Good luck!
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Juno[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Flora[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Eulalie[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Viola[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Briony[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Esme[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Natalia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Isla[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Junia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Romilly[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Opal[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Hollis[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Luella[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Estella[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jewell[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Delphine[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Lila[/name]

Names like [name]Catherine[/name] or [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Anne[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] are always beautiful classics that don’t date or feel like you were trying too hard. I’ve come to appreciate these names more as I’ve gotten older. With the huge array of names used today, and with everyone trying to be different, it’s names like these that actually stand out to my ear most. There may be more than one in a whole school, but there could easily be two of the ‘less common’ classics as well, now that everyone is gravitating toward them. My baby daughter is [name]Catherine[/name] and it was a toss up in the end between this and [name]Anna[/name]. At my older daughter’s k-8 school, there is one in the whole school (thanks directory)–which makes it no different than [name]Lydia[/name] or [name]Caroline[/name] (which I think of as rarer, but in reality pop up as much these days). I think it depends on how you look at these things. Sure, some people may not think it’s exciting enough but my feeling is some of the ones they’d find exciting might seem less so to me. Taste.

My daughter’s name is [name]Katherine[/name] so I love the name! We don’t use a nickname and never intend to. If she chooses to use one when she is older then that is fine by us but she will just have to deal with us using her full name!! I love [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] btw! Her full name is [name]Katherine[/name] Minuette (family name…). Here’s the list of other middle names we considered:
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Morgana[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jemima[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Jessica[/name]
[name]Catherine[/name] [name]Emma[/name]

I actually like [name]Catherine[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. It’s a beautiful name and it’s nice the middle name has family presence.
