[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
What are some of the coolest unintuitive / less-than-intuitive nicknames for a name that you’ve come across, either on these forums, online, or in real life? (Or anywhere else)
For me, I’ve come across 2 unintuitive nicknames that have made me think “oh, that’s actually really cool”, namely [name_u]Jess[/name_u] for [name_f]Justina[/name_f], and [name_u]Sam[/name_u] for [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. Despite their lack of intuitive relation to the name in question, both people were consistently called by their nickname, despite making their full name known as well.
Would love to hear the unintuitive nicknames you guys have come across!
[name_f]My[/name_f] dad is a [name_u]George[/name_u] who goes by [name_u]Henry[/name_u], and my oldest brother is also a [name_u]George[/name_u] who goes by [name_u]River[/name_u] makes no sense, but there are a ton of [name_m]Georges[/name_m] in my paternal family so I guess they had to start getting creative
I also know a [name_f]Carley[/name_f] who goes by [name_m]Chuck[/name_m]
And my husband has a male relative who is always called T@ff. I can’t even remember what his real name is, but it’s definitely nothing like T@ff.
Edited to add: this is a little bit different, because it’s his [name_f]English[/name_f] name (his real name is from an [name_f]Asian[/name_f] language) but I recently met someone who goes by H@ns. He explained it’s because he spent time as a student in [name_u]Germany[/name_u] and so had to choose a [name_m]German[/name_m] name, and he kept it to use an [name_f]English[/name_f] name. I think it’s so great!
there’s a girl in my grade named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who goes by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], I thought that was kind of odd, I come from a pretty conservative area so that’s the coolest unintuitive nickname I’ve come across.
I love [name_f]Ibby[/name_f] for [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]! I also knew a [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] who went by Mossy - absolutely no clue where that came from but I respect it
Did she introduce herself as [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]? I’ve heard of that online but never seen it - the only [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] I know is pretty adamant about full name.
she’s deaf so I don’t know, she’s deaf and that’s what her translator told everyone her name was and then the teacher said her name is [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I’m assuming she prefers to be called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]
but some that still felt slightly tied to the name;
[name_f]Neelie[/name_f] for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]
[name_u]Floy[/name_u] for [name_u]Florence[/name_u]
[name_m]Archie[/name_m] for [name_u]Charles[/name_u]
[name_f]Ave[/name_f] for [name_m]Aarav[/name_m] (like AY-v (rhyming with cave or gave)
[name_u]Billie[/name_u] for [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
Nette/Nettie for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]Zoe[/name_u] for [name_u]Lisa[/name_u]
Wow I don’t get [name_m]Bill[/name_m] for [name_u]Claude[/name_u] at all!
Out of these, I really like [name_u]Billie[/name_u] for [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]! I think [name_u]Billie[/name_u] could kind of work for [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] as well (kind of).
I don’t get [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_u]Zoe[/name_u] for [name_u]Lisa[/name_u]. How did those happen?
[name_u]Floy[/name_u] for [name_u]Florence[/name_u] is cool, and [name_m]Archie[/name_m] for [name_u]Charles[/name_u] is quite a bit of a stretch but interesting. So is [name_f]Neelie[/name_f] for [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].
i know a maria “marinina” which kickstarted my obsession with the name! it’s not entirely unintuitive, elongating names for nicknames isn’t uncommon here, but you usually add -lina not -nina!
another one i love is the name of a late greek author. her name was georgia but she was half-french and so she went by georges (pronounced zorz! typically male but so cool as a nn on a girl)
