Crazy 'bout Chrysanthemum

I promise you guys that baby girl will arrive sometime in the following two weeks and I’ll stop bugging you guys about the weird floral names…

The latest crush is undoubtedly [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], a suggestion made by my husband (to my surprise) and my older kiddos [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and Larkspur while being read the book by their dad a few nights ago. I know, I know it’s very much a mouthful and tricky to write, but I do think that the flower association and also the book (which I think 90% of the people in this country know) will be helpful. I like how [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] could in a way honor my mother whose name is [name_f]Christine[/name_f], because our daughter Larkspur’s name honors her paternal grandparents [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and [name_f]Cynthia[/name_f] and so far I’ve only honored grandma [name_f]Mary[/name_f] from my end… And this could be our last baby too, so it’s all or nothing in my head, I suppose.

I want your opinions on [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and suggestions of tiny middle names as well, preferably the ones that are straightforward in terms of pronunciation and spelling, such as [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] that we’ve been throwing around.

Also, are we crazy?

I love the name. I remember back in elementary school there was this girl who, whenever we played house, called her imaginary baby [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]. It’s cute, I think. Lots of nickname opportunities, too. We used to call the imaginary baby Mum, mostly, but I work with a Chrysanthe that we all call Chryssie. I see An also working, potentially.

I think you should use it. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] has been on my guilty pleasure list for a while, so I obviously love it. More importantly, you love it and its a possible honor name, paired with the fact that this might be your last baby. And as @papaya pointed out, a lot of cute nickname potential. I say go for it.

It’s not for me I’m afraid, however I do think in your sibset it fits wonderfully! If you like it you should go for it.

It’s better for a middle name. I think it’s just too much for a first name and much clunkier than your other kiddos’ names. Aside from [name_f]Maria[/name_f], they all just have 2 syllables.

I can’t wait to hear what you decide on!!

It’s too much of a name. What about [name_u]Christy[/name_u]? I know it doesn’t seem like your taste but it has the slight vintage vibe of [name_f]Maria[/name_f] and [name_f]Theda[/name_f]. [name_u]Christy[/name_u] [name_f]Philomena[/name_f] would be gorgeous

I think it makes a good middle, but I wouldn’t use it as a first. Usually I’d be up for it, being 4 syllables, and somewhat familiar, but I struggled to say [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] for a long time, and the -mum ending still feels awkward. Chrysanthe I think is a great option, but I have to think before I say [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], which makes it a no in my book. I also agree with @cactusgram that it feels a tad too much as a first with your other kids’ names.

I agree with the previous poster that Chrysanthe would be a better option. It’s easier to say and write and it’s more like your other kids’ names. Plus, while it isn’t a flower itself it has a flower-related meaning. I’m Greek and I actually know a Chrysanthe, she likes her name.
That said, I don’t think [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is unusable, but it’s quite the hard name to carry. I think I’d like meeting a little [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] though!
Middle names could be [name_f]Joy[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], [name_f]Fay[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_u]Dune[/name_u], [name_u]Rue[/name_u], [name_u]Jean[/name_u], [name_u]Wren[/name_u], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Liv[/name_f], [name_f]Niamh[/name_f]/[name_f]Neve[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Belle[/name_f], [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], [name_u]Blair[/name_u], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Jade[/name_f], [name_f]Fern[/name_f], [name_f]Blanche[/name_f], [name_f]Nyx[/name_f], [name_f]Lux[/name_f], [name_u]Dove[/name_u], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Maud/name_f

Nice flower, but the name doesn’t sound that attractive to me. Plus I think a lot of people would struggle with the spelling/pronunciation. I like Chrysanthe more.

[name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is so unwieldy, but the nicknames are very accessible.

I actually know a [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]. She’s an older woman, a relative of an acquaintance of mine. She went by [name_f]Chrissy[/name_f] as a girl, but adopted her full name when she became an adult. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] gets nothing but compliments all day long about her name! I absolutely adore this name. [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] could have more letters in her name altogether than sis [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] would, if the middle was short. She’ll learn to spell it just the same as every [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Theodosia[/name_f], and [name_u]Constantine[/name_u] has - with practice. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] the flower is a symbol of optimism and joy in most literature and artwork, which is beautiful. The flower also can be used as a healing agent, which I find to be a dazzling reminder for a little [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] to help those in need. With girls being named [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], and all other sorts of floral names, I can’t see why [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] couldn’t be a welcome addition.

Hmmm, this is a bit difficult. I think [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is adorable and I would tell you to go for it, but it does seem like the kind of name that would be difficult for a little girl to actually wear. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I appreciate it now, I think I would have been mortally embarrassed to be named [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] once i hit the pre teen years. I’m going to throw in my vote for Chrysanthe. I’ve always thought it was beautiful in its own right and it drops the unappealing mum syllable. It does lose the whimsy and charm of the full flower name, but I think it’s a trade off for wearability. Plus it has the very important advantage of being just about a manageable length- my own name at just 9 letters always got the last e chopped off when filling out standardized test forms- I can’t imagine trying to fit 13 letters on anything official!

Of course, every name has its disadvantages so if you really love it there are ways to work around the issues- nicknames are wonderful things! Obviously, it’s up to you.

I think Chrysanthemum is actually a really cool name  It has lots of nn potential as well, I think Santhe would be sweet.

Only negative for me is I do get a bit tongue tied saying the word.

[name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is not my personal style, but I think it’s a beautiful name. While I think thered be some issues (from other people, and maybe for your daughter), I think it could definitely work. I like a pp’s comparison to [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] (a name I love so much), it’s long with a lot of syllables but is also useable.

I like that theres so many nickname options for her too, and she could use one for situations where [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] might be too much for her.
I also like all of the meaning the name has for you, and I think it fits in very nicely with your other childrens names.

Unusable to me! It’s way too complicated and if I knew one I’d try to avoid spelling her name as much as possible.
I also don’t subscribe to “it’s my last baby so everything goes”, as I think the child being able to go through life easily with their name has to be considered before the parents naming style preferences (not everyone has to be James but something like Larkspur or peregrine seems easier to pull off than chrysanthemum or Peppermint).

I like [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]! Lots of cute nicknames if it’s too much of a mouthful to pronounce!
Maybe you could have [name_f]Eve[/name_f] or [name_f]Juno[/name_f] as a first name and [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] as a second? That way you would still be honoring your mother.

I think it’s darling and I could definitely see you using it. Lots of nickname potential, possible honor name, fits well enough into your sibset. And you both like it!

I still lean in favor of [name_f]Gardenia[/name_f] from one of your previous threads though. I don’t know if it can be beat!

i love it especially in the middle spot

I don’t think it’s very usable as a first name. I guess it’d be cute on a baby or toddler, but I can’t see it aging well and there’d be no end to problems of misspelling. But - I think it would make a very interesting middle.

I think [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is adorable. It is definitely elaborate, but not without nickname options that are more practical for childhood or daily use.
