(tw: terminal cancer, abandonment of children, acephobia) Henrik " Henry " Yaakov Whitford (61) is a professor who works at the same college where Ahyoka decided to stay as a security guard despite her traumatic experience of losing a brother-in-law at work. He mainly works with students who major in Homeland Security and so prepares people to work in the administration for large-scale , nation-wide security projects. That’s why he is grateful to Ahyoka and the others because he is aware that without the security of private institutions like universities or stores there is no Homeland Security at large.
He has three children - Della , Brendon and Moszek - and four grandchildren - Langston , Amelia , Kiryl and Egor… So he also understands Ahyoka being heart-broken at the fact that her family somewhat fell apart after her brother-in-law’s death. He is aware of the fact that Ahyoka doesn’t even live with her sister after she became a widow and that she feels betrayed by that , seeing as a random friend named Clem is appearently more trustworthy and worth living with than a blood-related sister. Ahyoka feels like there has been a lot of things left unsaid between her and Gola and wishes she could fix this but doesn’t know if she’s able to without showing clear resentment.
Henry knows what resentment can feel like… His wife left him after many years of marriage just because he confessed to being asexual and feeling no physical attraction to her or anyone… he only had a wife and kids in the first place because he wanted to have a family really bad. His wife instaed of divorcing him like a normal human being , just left one day leaving a note that she’s emigrating to Canada . Moszek was only 14 at the time, Brendon was 12 and Della was 10. He resented her for leaving without a word and not even saying goodbye to the kids. He is convinced that Moszek only doesn’t want a family and kids because he was the one who found his mother’s note and came to Henry 's bedroom crying at 5 AM in the morning, calling him a " wacko " for his sexuality. Henry believes Moszek just doesn’t want something so precious like a family to just disappear one day like it did when he was young, that’s why he never treated relationships seriously, wanted children or was skeptical about Brendon and Della 's parenting choices when they made them. Henry truly believed the words about being a " wacko " for a very long time but had his mother , Elmira 's support when raising the three children on his own.
Henry is very passionate about making people aware of different sexualities and especially the asexual spectrum. He also encourages poeple to get in touch with nature - being passionate about it since he was 20. He would hug trees, clean up the trash in forests or warn people about problems like global warming and would be very vocal about wanting to protect the planet. He felt like Mother Nature understood him more than his own mother Elmira. She told him that " Before you start protecting the planet, protect the country first". He took it to heart and went on majoring in Homeland Security. It wasn’t until later on in 1995 when Elmira 's favourite singer Michael Jackson came out with " Earth Song " that she truly understood through music what Henry meant all these years. She then also got involved in environmental movements. Henry still plays this song when protesting against pollution and for enactig policies that can help climate change. He even played the song at Elmira 's funeral and wants the song to be played at his too. Henry also knows that one of his grandsons , Kiryl , wanted to sing it in a school competition and he cried not even knowing if it were tears of joy or sadness - on one hand he knew that it was from the goodness of Kiryl 's heart that he wanted to sing and make everyone aware of climate change , but on the other he knew that Kiryl probably remembered the lyrics so well because it got engraved in him after his great-grandmother’s Elmira 's funeral. Henry knows that his is nearing , too. - he recently got a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and has only four months to live. Nevertheless, he refuses treatment and feels ready for death now that he know that people like Irene - a girl who discovered her bisexuality through honest conversations with her local LGBTQ+ community or Kiryl , his grandson, will take over in furthering the causes that he held dear all his life. He can’t wait for being reunited with his mother Elmira and his idol MJ in heaven. He devided his money among his 4 grandchildren so that it goes towards their college funds, while leaving his house to Moszek for what he had to go through after seeing his mother’s abandonment letter.
