Create A Family (With A Twist)

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] McBlaire (27) is the oldest of the McBlaire sisters.

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] enjoys being an older sister. It fits her well. She has always been a natural born leader, courageous, outspoken, & spirited. She likes to be a role model for her younger sisters and strives to be someone they & herself can be proud of.

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] is a very social person. She can make friends wherever she goes with ease. Though her friends list is long & large she keeps them all very close to her heart. She doesn’t believe she should have to choose one or the other - a small group of close knit friends or a large group you aren’t that close with. She views her friend group as one very large family.

Of all her friends, her closest is her high school best friend. The two girls met as members (& eventually co-captains) of their high school’s lacrosse team. She views her best friend as another little sister. In their younger years [name_f]Kala[/name_f] would bring her around often. Her family grew very fond of her friend & practically considers her a McBlaire as well. Their two families spend every holiday together as one.

[name_f]Kala[/name_f] is currently still in university as well, working on a degree in Physical Education. Her goal is to some day become a middle school PE teacher & she is very close to completing it.

Despite her parents’ persistence [name_f]Kala[/name_f] is not currently in a relationship. She enjoys being single & doesn’t want anything long term. She does want to be a mother someday though & seeing her younger sister become one has really given her baby fever. She has considered looking into fostering and adoption once she completes her degree and gets a good solid job out of uni.

Thora Colette [McBride] McDaniel (34) - pictured with her daughter, Ravenna " Wren " Elise McDaniel (6) - a paternal cousin to the sister’s, who Kala’s confided in following her desire to become a mother. Until they were a little older, Thora was more removed from Kala, Essie and Ava, as she felt their closeness was impossible to navigate, and any sort of awkwardness that could arise was something she desperately wanted to avoid. Thora also has her own brother - who’s three years younger than her - and they shared a close bond themselves. Part of her feared he’d feel replaced as well, so it was a little longer for all five of them to develop a consistent closeness: however, now that it’s formed, it’s unbreakable, and Thora can see how pleased their dad’s are every time the families come together.

Working as a child minder, Thora’s always had a clear maternal manner to her. Maybe it’s being an older sister or the fact she was obsessed with her baby dolls growing up - Thora couldn’t really say - but she loves her job, and has mastered the balance between ensuring happiness while not being a pushover and fostering chaos. What Thora’s always made especially clear is that her job won’t get in between her bond with her children. She only works school hours and has those she minds picked up around the time her kids get back, not wanting them to feel overshadowed or as if there’s a contest for her time and attention [although she and her wife joke they’re overshadowed by the family pomeranian, Zippy, who’s absolutely adored by their children].

The couple met when their college’s first Queer Society was forming, with it being one of the first social groups where Thora felt fully able to express her sexuality - having realised she was bisexual in her mid-teens, then recognising her preference for women in her later teens. Thora carried their son while her wife carried Wren, not that it ever differentiates how they adore their children. She’s typically the mom approached when they’re contemplating creative activites, being dedicated to painting in her free time. Kala’s best friend - the 6th Cousin as she’s affectionately known - has just learned she’s expecting a baby and has been coming to the McDaniel’s for advice, something Thora’s always happy to provide.

Wren’s often compared to her mother in temperament, especially by Thora’s mom, who she calls granny. Although she’s not quite as devoted to playing house, Wren has a very openly affectionate and caring nature. She’s very devoted to her friends and is always willing to compromise, usually trying to help people reach an agreement when petty bickering breaks out. The only argument source Wren won’t back down from is her love of Zippy: she joined the family when Wren was just 3 and the little girl instantly fawned over her. Wren can’t wait to be old enough to take Zippy on walks by herself, as truthfully she feels very calm once the little dog’s reached that sense of peace, very much finding solace in Zippys’.

In spite of this, Wren doesn’t think she’d like to work with animals: seeing them upset or in pain would be too much to handle, as she tells people. Her brother - who’s the older one of the pair - recently asked Wren about setting up a shelter, and this immediately caught her interest: rehoming animals to see them loved and protected definitely is up her street. When she was little, Wren would fight with her brother a bit, usually for the attention of their moms’. Her favourite thing was jumping between sitting on both of their laps or switching who’s hand she held, and intrusion wasn’t appreciated; now though, the siblings are on much better terms and enjoy discussing the future together often.

[name_u]Hunter[/name_u] [name_u]Braiden[/name_u] McDaniel (11) is Thora’s son and Wren’s older brother. He has been teased in school for having two moms and for being perceived as a nerd. Because of this, he gets angry easily and struggles to trust new people. But he is soft-hearted on the inside and loves animals, being very reliable in his care for [name_f]Zippy[/name_f]. He is a vegetarian and, ironically considering his name, he doesn’t like the idea of hunting. He is also very protective of [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. [name_f]Suhana[/name_f] ’ [name_f]Susie[/name_f] ’ Dharmini Kaushal (28) is one of [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and Mia’s teachers, who’s also taught Heather’s eldest child more recently. For [name_f]Susie[/name_f], it’s especially important to support students in the wake of bullying, which is why she’s become trusted by [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] in how she’s defended the former, especially when homophobia propels mistreatment he faces.

Growing up as one of the few Indian-Americans at her school, [name_f]Susie[/name_f] likewise faced bigotry and insensitivity, with questions often coming her way that were intrusive and assumptive, even if they weren’t intentionally offensive or meant as a dig.

As she’s matured, expressing her heritage and culture has become incredibly important to [name_f]Susie[/name_f], and she’s always happy to educate her students in this alongside [name_f]English[/name_f] and maths. Recently, she and several of the other teachers with unique cultural backgrounds had an International Food [name_u]Day[/name_u], and [name_f]Susie[/name_f] taught Heather’s eldest how to make both biryani and dal, something they absolutely loved. Food is something she’s always passionate about, bringing as much as she eats, which is why she’s very popular at family gatherings.

Being a teacher also means that Susie’s thought more about having children herself some day, and she recently started trying for a baby with her boyfriend, who she’s been with since they were 22. They’re settled in their two bedroom apartment - which they moved into four years ago - which is also shared by [name_m]Ludo[/name_m] the parakeet, who her boyfriend inherited from a former roommate. The couple haven’t shared news of this yet though, as Susie’s parents are very eager for a grandchild, and as she’s their older child, more emphasis is placed on her.

Being very energetic, gregarious, light-hearted and fun loving, [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] fits her job as a personal trainer perfectly, being ideal at assuring others when they’re facing nerves or insecurities. She’s always been someone fond of sports, specifically hockey and netball, but she’s always up for trying something new, most recently having become interested in rock climbing, which is how she and Mahesh spent one of their dates funnily enough.

A little ironically, children are what’s caused [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] to be more apprehensive when it comes to her romance with Mahesh. She has an 8 year old daughter, conceived shortly before her high school graduation, who means absolutely everything to [name_f]Zoey[/name_f], and the fact Mahesh has always been honest about his own uncertainties with becoming a parent means she doesn’t want him to feel pressured into anything. [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] and her ex have maintained an amicable relationship - even though their actual romance lasted less than 2 months - which is crucial to her for the well-being of their daughter.

She grew up with a deadbeat dad, who barely saw [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] and her sister, always picking his girlfriend’s over them, so seeing a cycle form would be unbearable for her. That’s the only part of [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] which isn’t easygoing: she takes punctuality and promises about meeting seriously, a warning everyone she dates gets a heads up about before anything serious forms. Mahesh is someone [name_f]Zoey[/name_f] wholeheartedly cares for and appreciates, however she’s also strong enough to know that if they go their own ways, it’s the best for them both should the time not be right.

Ainsley Margot Trevers- DuBlanc (8) is Zoey’s daughter. Ainsley is very similar to her mom and shares similar interests to her. They are both very energetic and athletic. Recently, Ainsley started rock climbing with her mom and has seen Mahesh a few times but doesn’t know his connection to her mom. Other than rock climbing she also is on a cheer team which she is really passionate about, for her last competition she convinced Zoey to let her dye her hair in the team colors. Sometimes Ainsley’s dad will go see her competing and will spend the afternoon with her. They recently went on a camping trip together which was the first time Ainsley had left her mom for more than a night.

Ainsley really likes puppies and was quite disappointed when she didn’t receive one for Christmas and instead received a Barbie dollhouse. She hasn’t accepted the fact that their landlord doesn’t allow pets. Ainsley has offered to pet sit for her gamma’s yorkie “Lemmy” but hasn’t gotten to yet. Lemmy is a senior dog and doesn’t always appreciate Ainsley’s affection.

However, she mostly keeps them on display and is a proud adult collector of vintage toys. She doesn’t like when people touch them but she has let [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] look at them before. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] low-key liked that the [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] movie had a “Weird Barbie” seeing even [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] herself had a weird [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] as a kid. She never threw it out and since the movie, embraced it. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] works at a repair shop so she’s used to refurbishing things to breathe new life into collectibles. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] has tried to see [name_m]Lemmy[/name_m] as an old dog who wants love and care but not overhyped attention. She gets along with [name_m]Lemmy[/name_m] but is trying to get [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] to understand Lemmy’s conditions. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] doesn’t believe [name_m]Lemmy[/name_m] is a “bad dog” at all but feels [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] can get very excited just to see dogs.

[name_f]Blithe[/name_f] has wanted a pet too and understands although she’s very cautious in keeping pets away from her collection. [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] has wanted to get [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] to help her pet sit around town. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] knows that [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] wants this so that it would “look more responsible” because [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] is an adult but [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] knows [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] is willing to do enough, even more, of her share so it’s not like she just wants the money. Still, [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] knows that no matter how many pets they watch, it’s not going to change the “no pets” policy. So [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] is a little worried on that. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] has been really excited to ring in 2024 and didn’t get a [name_u]New[/name_u] Year’s kiss, not that she needed one. “It’s not Valentine’s Day”. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] doesn’t like to think about Valentine’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] when she broke up with her boyfriend on Valentine’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] because she felt this wasn’t meant to be. [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] remembered when she felt bad and asked some mutuals, who all questioned her, “You seriously picked Valentine’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] to dump him?” She stood by her choice at the time and felt it was best to be honest although in retrospect, she realises that was probably not the best move and she was in poor timing. She doesn’t like to think about Valentine’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] for that reason and cringes a lot when stores advertise it in [name_u]January[/name_u] or even [name_u]December[/name_u]. That hasn’t meant she’s undermined her sister Zoey’s dates with Mahesh and loves to see the potential between them. She has peace with the father of [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u], who currently lives an hour away, and respects the amicable split between the two, even if a child was involved.

Sports are a mutual passion that made this natural between the pair, although [name_m]Malik[/name_m] prefers climbing trees than rocks: an activity his mom stopped him pulling [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] into before chaos erupted. He’s also avid about swimming, soccer and baseball, the latter being helped by the fact his uncle teaches a local college team, giving [name_m]Malik[/name_m] free access to games, which he loves attending. When he isn’t involved in sports, Malik’s a huge fan of robots, having his own collection of figures he’s enthusiastic about introducing to others.

Having been placed into care at birth, [name_m]Malik[/name_m] had several placements before his adoption, although he’s upfront about being happy he can’t remember the people who came before his mom, dad and younger brother [the bio child of his parents]: they’re his family after all. His parents are aware of why he wasn’t raised by his birth parents but are going to tell [name_m]Malik[/name_m] more when he’s older, as the details would be too upsetting curretly for him - being born to teenage parents who knew they couldn’t raise a child, and admitted they didn’t want to either. The truth is extremely important for [name_m]Malik[/name_m] in the long term though, so he’ll be told when it’s appropriate.

[name_f]Aida[/name_f] is infamously quite scatterbrained and tends to do things in ways that only make sense to her, especially organising, which used to drive her mother absolutely insane. This hasn’t ever hindered her work in the service industry though, and she’s currently the deputy manager of a local independent coffee shop The Beanscape, where she’s considered the go-to person when staff encounter difficult customers.

Some people credited [name_f]Aida[/name_f] as the social centre of the group she and [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] formed in high school, as she’s someone always eager to hang out or just chat about whatever comes to mind. In part this was because Aida’s younger sister is a very introverted person, who can become burned out quite quickly from socialising, so she didn’t want to bother her only sibling when her friends were much more compatible with her nature.

The Rivas family is big and likewise have lots of gatherings which [name_f]Aida[/name_f] always loves, although she credits her sister to helping prepare her for how her children respond to this. Both of her sons’ can be quite shy when initially attending these events, and [name_f]Aida[/name_f] and her husband take turns facing the brunt of hugs, questions and updates to ensure their children don’t feel overwhelmed by the gregarious personalities of the wider family. [name_f]Aida[/name_f] is sometimes bothered by people being surprised at her maturity where motherhood is concerned, but being the best parent possible is what means more to her than letting perceptions bother her.

However most of her close friends are friends from her childhood she met through her parents or Aida.

Safiyya is a homebody and loves curling up with her kitten Betty or working on her next artistic masterpiece. Safiyya named Betty after Betty Woodman, a revolutionary potter who Safiyya admires. Safiyya found Betty (the cat) in the train terminal on a cold and rainy day and immediately fell in love with her, her landlord luckily let her keep a cat and the two have been inseperable since.

Khayria somewhat blames herself for this, as she’s currently working as a model which means constant travel, and she knows the concerns for her in the industry have led to her sister being looked upon with more fretting too, even though it’s clear Khayria is the only one who’s going to be in this business.

It won’t mean that Khayria will be living alone though when her sister and [name_f]Kenzie[/name_f] take the next step. One of her fellow models is going to be coming to take up the spare room and she’s actually really excited about this. Studying a combined degree of history and religion, specifically the intersection of both subjects, [name_f]Mair[/name_f] jokes she’s very boring when compared to her girlfriend and sister. [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] doesn’t mind if she’s diagnosed with it— at this point, she just wants an explanation for why socialising seems like a puzzle she can’t quite solve.

As a double major of visual art (with a painting concentration) and art history, [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] is another artistic member of the Ratanarak family. The baby of five sisters, she and [name_f]Star[/name_f] are extremely close due to their shared love of art. She’s even helped design some of the issues of Iridescent Idiosyncrasies, something she’s very proud of. [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] has been trying to convince [name_f]Star[/name_f] to make a issue that’s religion-themed so [name_f]Mair[/name_f] can submit something in the zine, but Star’s a little hesitant, as the avant-garde roots of the magazine might not mesh well with the antique aesthetics associated with religion.

[name_m]Cloud[/name_m] loves oil painting and has had a couple of her paintings shown in small galleries, something that she’s endlessly proud of. She loves that her pieces are actually in places you can go find them. and her heart skips a beat whenever she sees someone tag her in a photo of her art. However, she’s been noticing that another artist, a schoolmate of her and [name_f]Mair[/name_f], has been copying some of her work. She’s been investigating this with the help of her lawyer older sister, though the only help she’s been able to get is minimal, as helping a family member as a lawyer is unlawful in the eyes of court. [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] really hopes that she’s just overreacting and it’s not actually plagiarism, as bringing this stuff to court would be extremely exhausting.

[name_m]Cloud[/name_m] lives with her closest friend other than [name_f]Mair[/name_f], who is on the autism spectrum. [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] has been asking questions about the process of diagnosed, and her friend is more than happy to help. They get along very well due to their extremely blunt natures, which allow for very smooth communication. Another member of the household is her cat, [name_f]Mai[/name_f], whom she adores.

[name_f]Ciza[/name_f] " [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] " [name_f]Adela[/name_f] Turković (20, they/she) is Cloud’s roommate, currently majoring in women, gender + sexuality studies, and the second favourite human of [name_f]Mai[/name_f], as no-one can dream of rivalling [name_m]Cloud[/name_m]. Although their dream is to become a novelist, [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] chose to focus on studying a broader topic to give them greater insight into the work they produce eventually - and she’s constantly commenting on how slow her writing process tends to be as it is. She’s accepted creativity isn’t a tap, however the frustration is something they’d rather be open about, especially as [name_m]Cloud[/name_m] and their other friends have proved consistently supportive when this is mentioned by [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f].

As someone comfortable in their own company, there have been lonelier periods of life for [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f], as people have mistaken this for dismissal. The fact they have anxiety on top of this has made things more complicated, as for how they’re known for being forthright and not mincing their words much, speaking about such a personal matter is never easy, especially as she’s unfortunately no stranger to how people can react to some types of information.

When [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] was diagnosed with autism at the age of fourteen, there was a backlash of denial within part of her family. Her dad’s parents completely refused to accept this information, insisting their grandchild had been wrongly ‘labelled’, and they even criticised [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] Zsas’ mom and dad for helping them gain access to getting this confirmed. Really, everyone knows this stems from how mental health and disability has historically been treated, with anyone deemed ‘different’ being horrifically mistreated, shunned and maligned, however this didn’t dampen the pain [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] experienced when two people they were once very close to behaved with so much hostility.

Slowly she’s been rebuilding her relationship with them - after two years of going no contact - and there has been progress in them learning more. At the very least they know accept she is autistic, and denial isn’t prevailing, but more complex and modern topics are something [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] hasn’t quite started broaching yet. Her parents have supported her through this journey, along with her younger sister, who [name_f]Zsa[/name_f] Zsa’s currently supporting with university applications.
