Amethyst Lillian Fuller-Kanzaki (30) is Dai’s wife and expectant mother, who was absolutely delighted to learn of her pregnancy, after having come to believe she’d have to accept conceiving wasn’t going to be part of her and Dai’s marriage. Fertility issues have plagued a lot of Amethyst’s paternal family - she and her sister weren’t the only children conceived by her parents, but their mother tragically miscarried three times prior to Amethyst being born - and she had anticipated experiencing the same pains her parents, uncle and grandma all went through; but it was still difficult nonetheless, as some of her cousin’s had children during the 5 years she and Dai were deliberating what to do. She feels a bit silly for requesting it but knows she’d like their unborn child’s name to have a special meaning, similar to how she and her sister were named for precious things [her a gemstone, her sister an emotion], to signify what they meant to their own parents - even if it led to a lot of people asking if they were ex-hippies.
The field Amethyst works in is sociology, specifically conducting research and interviews into studies about socioeconomic status and its impacts, which stemmed from her childhood. She attended a school with a significant class divide among pupils, and while the children had grown out of such prejudices for the most part, a lot of parents held each other in contempt or distrust due to the gap in wages and benefits that was always evident. Amethysts’ best friend grew up in foster care and often joked they were the middle ground in the ongoing class battle, which was impossible to ignore the older they got, and is still something she finds herself questioning when visiting her parents or extended family in the city where she grew up.
Alongside her job, Amethyst regularly volunteers at local homeless shelters and has used her connections to journalism - specifically her close friend, who helped her and Dai settle into life in Washington when they very much were feeling homesick - to raise more awareness and funds to help with the project. She does worry about seeming patronising or solely interested in her own image, due to how that’s a frequent accusation within the nonprofit sphere, but Dai reassures her often, and in turn she supports him whenever he’s dealing with work stress. Clearly being the shyer member of the couple, Amethyst’s very aware they seemed an unlikely match - helped by the fact a lot of people were into Dai when he asked her out, and then speculated she’d be too ‘boring’ for him as a long-term partner - but feels their differences are what strengthen their bond; helped by the fact she’s very good at baking, while her husband would probably set fire to the kitchen if he tried making himself a snack after work.
Currently Amethyst’s sister has also dragged her into a matchmaking mission - which she’s going along with, as while she loves her younger sibling dearly, her obtuse approach to everything might ruin their cousins chances. He recently joined a band at the college he attends and has fallen for his fellow musician, Jax Akamatsu. This is a tricky situation for him to navigate as recently it came out Jax’s semi-secret crush, Justice Carvough, had started a relationship with a girl named Noor, and they’d kept things so private it wasn’t revealed until Jax asked him out, something that was evidently disappointing and for a while, Amethyst’s cousin was worried it could impact their wider friend group because Justice felt he needed to avoid things. Thankfully, everything’s calm and everyone’s in a much better place now - as Justice never led Jax on and he and Noor weren’t public because it honestly scared them to gain such attention from people - but Amethyst knows her cousin deserves his own chance at romantic happiness and is just trying to convince him to confide in his bandmates; who he worries will think he’s just over compensating or trying to comfort Jax in the moment.
