Create a Hogwarts Class

This game is inspired by this Name the Class game. Hop on over there and see examples of how this game will function. Basically, every poster will be naming a student based on the information given to them by the poster above them. This can include the character’s history, family background, personality, favorite classes, career ambitions, etc. – anything that will give the character shape and help the next poster create a name for them! Remember to include a house for every character in every post.

Remember that Hogwarts houses are nearly equally split between boys and girls, so let’s try to keep the gender ratio pretty even! However, please also feel free to add nonbinary characters and such. Let’s just keep the number of students in each house capped as is in the original post.

Here are some links to lists that may be helpful for name inspiration, but feel free to use any names you see fit!

We’ll start with a group of First Years!

The Class

Gryffindor (0/10)

Hufflepuff (0/13)

Ravenclaw (0/12)

Slytherin (0/11)

The first student is a Hufflepuff girl. She is Muggleborn and hails from a middle class family in Manchester, where she is the only child. Her mother is an optometrist and her father is a secondary school history teacher. Her parents were both shocked when she received her Hogwarts letter, but were supportive and fascinated by the magical world. This student never imagined going to boarding school and is having a hard time adjusting to living away from her parents. She finds comfort in writing them as often as she can, telling them about her progress in school, the new friends she’s made, and all the things she is learning about the wizarding world.

This student doesn’t understand why the Hogwarts houses are so important to some of her peers, especially those from wizarding families. She didn’t think much of the sorting ceremony or the houses, and is simply glad that most of the students in her house are kind and helpful. She has become friends with the other Hufflepuff girls in her year, but her best friend is an outgoing, flamboyant boy from Gryffindor who is helping her come out of her shell a little bit.

Compared to some of her peers, this student considers her name rather boring and average. Her first and middle names were popular choices for British parents around the year 2000, and her surname is common in the United Kingdom.

Sophie Georgia Thomson

Sophie’s Gryffindor friend has been looking forward to his first day since he was a toddler. Excitable, outgoing, and flamboyant, he seems to make friends where ever he goes! He comes from a gregarious family known for their charm and chivalry, which includes many other Gryffindors.
He’s proud of his name, which he thinks fits his personality really well: a long, unique first and middle name and an enchanting word last name.

Montmorency Vitruvius [name_f]Darling[/name_f]

Montmorency’s Slytherin acquaintance is a Half-Blood who comes from a working class family in Newcastle. His father works with Montmorency’s dad as a broadcaster for the Wizarding Wireless Network and his mother is a cleaner. At the sorting hat ceremony, he gave off a bit of a moody vibe and wasn’t particularly friendly to Montmorency, despite already knowing him due to their father’s work connections. He has a 1-syllable first name that was more popular in his parents’ era than now, a 2-syllable old-fashioned middle name and an occupational surname.

The next student is a Ravenclaw girl. As far as she knows she is a pureblood witch, though her mother’s side of the family was not able to keep a long history of their ancestry. Her mother comes from an Irish [name_u]Traveller[/name_u] family, and her father is from an old, pureblood [name_f]English[/name_f] wizarding family. Her father’s family had ancient ties to Slytherin and Ravenclaw houses. However, he was something of a black sheep in the family and while he was sorted into Ravenclaw, it was more for his creativity and curiosity than pure intellect. Her mother was of a kindred spirit and they were close friends during school, marrying after they graduated. Many considered them a little strange while they were in school. They went on to live relatively secluded lives in western [name_u]Ireland[/name_u], subsisting on their magic and a little farm they were able to purchase. They have seven children and this student is number five, with one sibling who has already graduated and three older siblings.

This student takes after her parents quite a bit. She grew up fairly isolated and her siblings were her best friends. She is closest to her next eldest sibling, who is a third year. Out of all her siblings, this student may be the most like her parents, and was appropriately sorted into Ravenclaw for her curiosity and imagination.

This student’s first name is colorful and unique, and her middle name is distinctly Irish. Her surname sounds posh and mystical.

late, but such a cool game!

lavender caoimhe barclay

the next student is a gryffindor girl. lavender and this student sat together in the train compartment together, sparking friendship. she’s from a pure blood family, and has a french and english lineage. her mother being part veela has passed her flaunts and beauty to her. her father is from a quite high, and dignified english family. her family is quite open to all, and she was taught that purebloods are not better than others, and how everyone equalized eachother. there wasn’t much of a shock she was placed into gryffindor, as she had always exerted the characteristics. she’s also quite studious.

she has one younger sister, and one elder sister, in 3rd year. she also has many friends, like sophie and lavender at hogwarts, but relies most on her elder sister. besides her bravery, she cannot get over her homesickness, and tends to cry much on her sister’s shoulder who happens to also be a fellow gryffindor. she finds comfort in books, adventure, friends, family, chocolate frogs, and her favorite classes, herbology, and astronomy.

her first name is a strong, but classy english and french name. her middle name is another french name, but a very popular name amongst all. it relates somewhat to the sky, from adjectives to figures. her last name is a strong english surname, but with a kind sound.

This next student resides within Ravenclaw and has Veela-related communal ties to [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] through which they have met before. These previous encounters do not mean they are on friendly footing, however.

The schism between this student and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] stem from this student’s family’s valued sentiment that pure bloods remain superior to half- or muggle-born witches and wizards. This student has also internalized this message of superiority and therefore looks down on the sympathies of the Beckette’s. Despite this, this student suffers from an unknown-even-to-the-self deep psychological incongruence and cognitively dissonant internal despair, likely due to the fact that for most of her life, she was suspected to be a Squib until a year before her 11th birthday, when her magic manifested in the presentation of transfiguring into a potted houseplant. Her treatment of being a suspected Squib by her disappointed family allowed this student to develop empathy toward those from those who experienced prejudice due to coming from part- or non-magical backgrounds. These diametrically opposed overt values of pureblood superiority vs. this covert equality-for-all create a deep, brooding conflict within this student.

Upon the realization that this student did indeed imbue magic, she was soon able to effortlessly, and often accidentally, transfigure into other flora with impressive ease. Despite her natural inclination for Transfiguration, this student remains primarily interested in [name_m]Astronomy[/name_m], Numerology, and Divination. Because of the treatment of being nonmagical by her family, this student places very high value on the mind and intellect over magic in talent, evolving into a pillar of their personality and demeaner. This near-paralyzing preoccupation with studying to perfection led the sorting hat to declare Ravenclaw before it even touched her head.

This student’s given names ironically reflects her opposing conflict within themselves while also seemingly encapsulates their studious disposition. Their surname is not surprisingly one associated with strong heritage and potentially pretentious reputation.
