Dean for a girl?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all! I was just wondering everyone’s opinion on [name_u]Dean[/name_u] or [name_m]Deane[/name_m] for a girl. I personally love boy named for girls ([name_u]Blake[/name_u], [name_u]Avery[/name_u], etc. Are on my list). But recently I found that my grandfather’s name [name_m]Dennis[/name_m] [name_u]Gene[/name_u] put together makes [name_u]Dean[/name_u].

[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_f]Annmarie[/name_f] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m]

Thoughts?

I would do [name_u]Jean[/name_u] over [name_u]Dean[/name_u], which just feels more masculine to me.

[name_u]Jean[/name_u] was my aunt’s middle name! So I definitely love it.

It’s hard to say these days, but if I were a girl, which I am, I would detest the name. Some girls would love it and carry it off with panache, but I believe many more would hate it.

I think it’s one of those boy names that can definitely crossover. I’ve known a girl named [name_u]Drew[/name_u], so why not [name_u]Dean[/name_u]? I think it has potential and I don’t find it as obnoxious as using [name_u]James[/name_u] (or other boy names) on a girl.

It wouldn’t have occurred to me, but especially with the family connection - I like it!

[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_f]Annmarie[/name_f] is lovely. Go for it!

If you like it I say go for it!
If a girl can be [name_u]James[/name_u] or [name_u]Sloane[/name_u], [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] or [name_u]Devon[/name_u], she could certainly be [name_u]Dean[/name_u].

I don’t like Dean for a boy, so I’m really not fond of it for a girl. I just don’t like the heavy sound, and also, tend to think of it as a title (academic admin) so it seems a little odd to me as a given name. However, could it work - sure.

If you do end up going with Dean, I’d stick with that spelling, as Deane, would more often than not get Deanne, I’d think, especially on a girl.

[name_u]Dean[/name_u] could totally work for a girl! I’d go with the [name_u]Dean[/name_u] spelling. I’m afraid [name_m]Deane[/name_m] would get pronounced as dee-anne.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like the Irish name, Eadoin? It’s pronounced ay–deen, so [name_u]Dean[/name_u] or [name_u]Deen[/name_u] could be a nn.

No. If you’re wanting to honor him [name_f]Denise[/name_f] and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] are the feminine forms of his name.

Would you give your son a feminine name?

Where’s my laughcry emoji when I need it? No. No in a million languages. No written on the sky in airplane exhaust. No, no, no.

I think it would work. Personally I’d give her a formal fn, like [name_u]Delaney[/name_u]… and call her [name_u]Dean[/name_u].

Absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it. Paired with a classic mn? So fresh.

[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u] [name_f]Daniella[/name_f] (nn DD!)

If you want [name_u]Dean[/name_u] I would just use that spelling, as I think [name_m]Deane[/name_m] could be mispronounced as dee-ann, especially if the person knew [name_m]Deane[/name_m] was a girl.

I love this suggestion. Personally I think [name_u]Dean[/name_u] is cute for a middle name for a girl, but if you really love it I don’t see why a little girl can’t be [name_u]Dean[/name_u].

I don’t like the name [name_u]Dean[/name_u] for a boy, so it’s a thumbs down for a girl. I would not like that name for myself at all.

What about [name_f]Dee[/name_f], [name_f]DeeAnn[/name_f]/[name_f]Dee[/name_f]-[name_f]Anne[/name_f]/etc., or [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] (dee-anna)? As a PP mentioned, I think a lot of girls would dislike being named [name_u]Dean[/name_u] because it’s so clearly masculine. It could work as a middle, especially since using the mother’s maiden name as a middle is already established and many of these aren’t feminine, some are even clearly boys’ names. (Though I know a girl whose middle is like this and she hates it, so maybe you can’t win them all…)

I like [name_u]Dean[/name_u], but only for a boy, sorry! I’ve heard people use [name_f]Deanna[/name_f] to honour [name_u]Dean[/name_u]. [name_u]Jean[/name_u] is nice too.

Would be a cute nn for [name_f]Ondine[/name_f] - feels incomplete stand alone for my taste- The gender issue isn’t a big deal - I feel like its a name when people hear they will either love or just feel indifferent towards and that’s a great thing. A lot of names i love people either love or hate with a passion no in between haha
