Hello what are your thoughts and opinions on the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]? I know a lot of people are turned off by it bc of Frozen, and even I am a bit. But will it cause eventual teasing like singing Letting Go, or something? And middle name suggestions are welcomed
Elsa is a very pretty name but yes I think it would come with a lot of comments (positive and negative) and maybe become frustrating for the child at some point to always have their name commented on.
I have very negative feelings about it but that’s only because of a personal experience and also I used to have a teacher named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] who for some reason all the students made up nicknames for her behind her back. In Spanish “[name_f]El[/name_f]” means “the” so you can basically make a whole lot of nicknames with words that start with “sa”.
This was literally 10 years ago and I still chuckle when I think of some of them as they were so creative. If you’re in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking place which I’m almost sure you are I reckon it shouldn’t happen
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] is quite pretty and would be well worth it. Though I think some kids will know Frozen when your daughter goes to school, most will probably be fascinated by another Disney hit movie.
If it bugs you too much, you may look at [name_f]Else[/name_f], a Scandinavian variation of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. A Danish ancestor of mine held the name centuries ago.
@shells15 I have always secretly hoped this will happen to the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid and I can finally use my GP name [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] but the film just doesn’t seem to go away
But I think [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] is more ok to use than [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] due to being much older, and less of a meme.
I guess the fact it’s usually a male name where I’m based also makes it a tiny bit difficult to use. It’s like being named after the little mermaid but also a boy’s name at the same time
I love the sleek yet rugged feel of [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. It’s strong and sweet
I personally do not have any specific feelings about the name [name_f]Elsa[/name_f]. (I did however, know really rude little girl named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] from my church. That doesn’t really deter me though.) I was in elementary school when Frozen came out lol; it’s safe to say I was a little obsessed for a while. If you’re worried about her getting teased, I think the time when naming girls [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] was really popular was back in 2014-2016, so it should be okay- there’ll be a new Disney movie for the kids to obsess about so…
Ever thought of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f]? Both sound very similar, but [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] doesn’t have the Frozen association like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] does. I love both, but I think as of now, especially since Frozen 2 was just released within the last year, and [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] might see a new surge in popularity, I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] would be more usable, but I think both are just stunning!
Here are a few combos that popped into my head:

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]

[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
I like it but I think [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] will be better to use because you wouldn’t get the Frozen references
I know three Elsas, the three of them older than the film, so I was familiar with the name when Froze came out. There’s also few famous people named [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] Pataky. It’s a “common” name. Probably people will make a comment about the connection with Frozen, but I guess it’s not a bad like. I mean, I’m sure a lot of youngs [name_m]Harrys[/name_m] have heard things about being name like [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
Elsa is very pretty. And some kids might love being named after Disney royalty. But, I do think that there is the potential for “Let it Go” teasing. Frozen is still very popular afterall. Its not like its a reference that wont grow up knowing.
Then again, I dont think you should worry too much about potential teasing. You could choose a completely different name only for that to be used in popular culture down the road and still end up with a teasing problem. If you really love [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], then go for it.
I know an [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] who is a teenager and she did get jokes when the movie came out but not so much anymore .
Elsa is sweet, and I think it’s usable, but Frozen is definitely a strong association. The first movie came out seven years ago, and kids today who weren’t even alive then are obsessed with it now, so I think it will continue to be popular for some time yet.
I really like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] (in spite of disney), but I have preferred alternatives. I have [name_f]Ilse[/name_f] on my list (which I love) but I love [name_f]Ailsa[/name_f] even more!
Honestly, the reason I don’t like huge pop culture names has nothing to do with MY opinion of the name.
I just see a kid/adult with this name introducing themselves and 99% of people’s response being, “[name_f]Elsa[/name_f], like the movie Frozen?” Along with 50% of people singing an awkward and uncomfortable rendition of “Let It Go.” I can guarantee this because my name is associated with a song… And people sing it to me for absolutely no reason. Unless your kid has unlimited patience (and honestly, who does??) then you will hear periodic huffing and puffing about how annoying it is for strangers to say/do the same exact thing.
As for teasing, whenever this topic comes up on this forum, I say the same thing. When kids want to tease or bully someone, they will find a way. It doesn’t matter what your kid looks like, what they wear, or what their name is - They will find something to pick on.
If you love the name enough to handle all of this, then I say go for it. [name_f]My[/name_f] top baby name is always used as a villain in TV shows and movies. I’m ok with that association, but I understand people who wouldn’t be.
Yes I like [name_f]Elsa[/name_f], yes I like [name_f]Merida[/name_f], yes, I don’t feel like using them.
Also, on the other hand, my cousin has red hair and is named [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]. Since I’ve known her for a while, I don’t think of the connection anymore. But I’m sure people who meet her think of it. But after a while, it’s ok.
It’s okayyyy! So if you love it go for it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] know what to expect.
Also, [name_f]Anna[/name_f] is great too, which is common but no one I know pronounces it like that.
Elsa does carry a strong association with frozen but it is a lovely name! One of my favorite names is the name [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] do think that could be a good alternative?
I agree 100% with @Elle1. If you truly love the name then I would not be put off by the Disney and teasing potential. Children will tease, it’s just part of growing up and if it isn’t about their first name it could be their last name or some physical trait they share or the way they speak or a funny word they say etc. All that said, I am sure an [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] born right now will not escape the comparison, or will assume YOU are a huge Disney / Frozen fan. I prefer [name_f]Elise[/name_f] as an alternative or as @rosepip suggested, [name_f]Alissa[/name_f]/Alyssa.
