--- endearing, everlasting edelweiss! šŸ•Šļø

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], friends! [name_m]You[/name_m] might as well cue the song ā€œEdelweissā€ā€¦maybe it’s on repeat as I write this, maybe I’ve been humming it nonstop as of late, maybe it makes me tear up every time. Shhhh, I won’t spoil those secrets!

[name_f][/name_f]

Anyhow, as I’ve been thinking about [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] a lot recently, and still have yet to find a combo that brings me as much joy as she does on her own, I figured it was finally time to make a topic about this sweet girl! I remember being sung this song as a child, I remember hearing it when I’d watch [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f], I remember humming it to myself even then, but I hadn’t come across it in the context of a potential name for my lists until a few years ago. Somehow, though, she lost her footing, and I forgot about her until a month or so ago. How dare I!

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] has always felt almost hymnal to me, reverent, the ringing of a bell, sparkling snow, and sweet flowers sprouting up despite the cold. She’s a twinkling winter name to me, and I love that refreshing femininity she carries. Plus, ā€œā€¦blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever,ā€[name_f][/name_f] I mean, is there a dearer sentiment than that to tell your child? Golly, she gets me right in the heart! :face_holding_back_tears:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]So[/name_f], I’ve got a few questions for you all surrounding this everlasting flower: :snowflake:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think she could realistically work? As a first, or should I just reserve her for the middle spot?
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. Is [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] connection too obvious and overwhelming? Is it such a distinct tie that it makes the name feel exponentially too clunky?
  4. [name_f][/name_f]
  5. What first name would you give sweet [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] if she were the middle? If she were the first, what middle would you give her?
  6. [name_f][/name_f]
  7. What would you name a sibling to [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]?
  8. [name_f][/name_f]
  9. What would you nickname your own little [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]?
  10. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

Thank you in advance, dear berries! [name_f]Happy[/name_f] winter. :white_heart:

[name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] is a staple childhood film for me and my family (we even went to Salzburg to see the filming locations and everything, which was amazing), and it’s still one of my favourites. [name_m]The[/name_m] song reminds me of so many wonderful things. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother used to sing it to me as a lullaby! And the message is [name_f][/name_f] so beautiful and powerful. Of course I’m on board with this as a name!
[name_f][/name_f]Here are some thoughts:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  1. [name_f][/name_f]

I’m unsure on usability as a first… I would love to say, ā€œgo for itā€, and honestly, I think she could totally work. But for a couple reasons, I think she’s probably a better choice for the middle spot. She’s not as established as a name then other floral names, and doesn’t have a super instinctive ā€œnameyā€ sound (although she is absolutely beautiful, no doubt.) Also, although her nicknames are super cute, nothing is really jumping out at me as having potential to fall back on. [name_f]So[/name_f], basically what I’m saying is I freaking love her as a first and would be delighted to meet a little [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], but realistically I would probably reserve her for the middle.

    [name_f][/name_f]
  2. [name_f][/name_f]
  3. [name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]No[/name_m], I don’t think so at all! Although it is my first association, I think it’s a lovely sentiment as opposed to being clunky. I also think that because she’s tied to the song (separate from the movie), and the flower, it’s not too overwhelming. I would say no problem here whatsoever.

    [name_f][/name_f]
  4. [name_f][/name_f]
  5. [name_f][/name_f]

Off your lists, I might go for something like:
[name_f][/name_f]*And I think any of these could be reversed, for the record

    [name_f][/name_f]
  6. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] Edelwiess
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Oona[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Bonny[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] (maybe too descriptive, but super cute. I think she flows very well with 2 syllable names ending in a long E sound…Birdie, [name_f]Marnie[/name_f], Sylvie)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

If I[name_f][/name_f] were to name a little one, I would go for [name_f]Petra[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] ā€œPetā€[name_f][/name_f], or [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] Sarah-Beth[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] as a double barrel middle.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think she could realistically work?

[name_f][/name_f]

I do think it works for a bold namer. It reads a little eccentric but it feels substantial from the consonant sounds, the flower imagery, and the fact that flowers have a long history of use as names feels like an anchor for it.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think my main considerations would be teaching the pronunciation and spelling, being prepared for curious questions and having an accessible nickname. I would also want sibling names to be at a similar level of familiarity or boldness.

[name_f][/name_f]

Is [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] connection too obvious and overwhelming?

[name_f][/name_f]

There would be many people in the world who would not have any reference point for the name be it film or otherwise. I’m not one for films myself and I’m fairly sure I haven’t ever seen it in full. If it wasn’t for this forum or my interest in names I probably wouldn’t know about the film connection at all.

[name_f][/name_f]

What first name would you give sweet [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] if she were the middle? If she were the first, what middle would you give her?

[name_f][/name_f]

I immediately thought of the little black dress style – grounded and classic with some air and lightness to counter the sound of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]. I think you could also lean into the literary/cultural inspiration.

What would you name a sibling to [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

Something unexpected or with a little punch about it.

[name_f][/name_f]

From my long list:

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] & [name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] & [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] & [name_m]Merle[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

What would you nickname your own little [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]The[/name_m] most obvious choices would be [name_f]Edie[/name_f] or [name_f]Ada[/name_f] although I’m not as fond of them as I used to be.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] could work, but I don’t think they’re quite right. Perhaps [name_f]Dodie[/name_f] would be my favourite as a home nickname.

I do think she has potential [name_f][/name_f]- similar sounds to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Aveline[/name_f], [name_f]Avis[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- however, I do think her familiarity and useability depends on people knowing/being familiar with the song? That said, she’s not too[name_f][/name_f] different from [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f]? and while I am still leaning ā€˜middle name territory’ I think, 9 girls were called [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] in the US last year [name_f][/name_f]- and 79 have been named it since 2015.

I’m going to answer 1 and 2 together…I do love the idea of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] nn [name_f]Edie[/name_f], on paper, but for me it’s probably[name_f][/name_f] too connected to the film to be useable. I have seen the film maybe 2-3 times in my life and not always the whole way through. I like it but I’m not a sort of top tier fan. But still [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] immediately puts the song in my head and I don’t really have a point of reference for it outside that. I wouldn’t say it’s clunky[name_f][/name_f] but if I met an [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] I would think ā€˜oh your parents really like the film huh?’ and I do think they’d get the occasional person singing it to them. I know, it’s a flower, but would I know the name of that flower without the film? Unsure. That probably depends on location/context.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]In[/name_f] terms of combos, from my list I would choose…
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] (just because it’s my favourite name and I do think it goes nicely!)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Saffron[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] (love this suggested above)
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]

[name_f][/name_f]

For a sibling I’d go for something similarly whimsical yet bold….
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Altalune[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Iolanthe[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Lillemor[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Pomeline[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Rosemonde[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Vivendel[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Astrophel[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Halcyon[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Marinell[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Somerled[/name_m]
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Valentine[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]

For a nickname, I’ve already said [name_f]Edie[/name_f] but I also think [name_f]Della[/name_f] would be sweet!

[name_m]Not[/name_m] in a bad way, but I think it’s entered the realm of anything can be a name and it’s more traditional (in a sense) than that of the likes of wingspan and banjo.

[name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is bold, but perfectly usable. It’s a nature name with symbolic meaning across multiple countries and tons of nickname potential [name_f][/name_f]- a little [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] could go by Dells, [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Elvy[/name_f], [name_f]Adele[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], [name_f]Icey[/name_f], [name_f]Edie[/name_f], or even [name_f]Snow[/name_f]. [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] is an obvious connection. But [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] existed before that film. It’s a national symbol of not just [name_f]Austria[/name_f], but basically every [name_f]Alpine[/name_f] country, including [name_f]Italy[/name_f], [name_f]France[/name_f], [name_f]Romania[/name_f], Slovenia, and Switzerland. [name_m]Even[/name_m] before the national symbolism, [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is a beautiful and distinct flower. [name_m]Like[/name_m] you said, it’s very wintery. As a snow-growing flower, it can also be a symbol of blooming in adversity. That’s a ton of associations. And the Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] isn’t a negative association. It’s a classic film, and [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] in the movie is a symbol of hope, national pride that’s free from bigotry, and resistance against Nazi tyrrany. That’s a noble namesake.

I’d agree with previous posters that it’s a bold choice but could be workable. There’s familiar nickname options, it has a nice sound and positive connotations. For me personally it’s probably middle name territory only but I do see it working IRL.

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

As someone who is only loosely familiar with the film and musical, the connection isn’t overpowering (but I may be an outlier here). And even so, it’s a nice association. I actually predominantly associate [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] with the flower because I’ve seen it in the mountains a few times IRL (also a very lovely association). I definitely would not call [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] ā€œclunkyā€, probably because ā€œedelā€ can mean precious or fine, which conjures more of an airy/light image for me (like fine silk).

Firstly, your description of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is perfectly lovely :white_heart:

[name_f][/name_f]

I think she could work in the first or middle spots equally well

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] is a beautiful connection. I’m not sure how well known it would be now & I wouldn’t worry about it.

I love [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] is such a nostalgic and special film to my family, and I would love to meet a little [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]! [name_f][/name_f] I know there was a berry several years back who had a [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], which I think is beautiful! [name_f][/name_f] I don’t know that I’d have the guts to use her up front, but I do think she could be usable, especially with rarer floral names like [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] getting more mainstream attention (I know two! [name_f][/name_f] I think it’s Edelweiss’s time haha).

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t think the film is too strong of a connection? [name_f][/name_f] I mean that’s half the appeal for me, but with everything going on in pop culture, I don’t think [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] is front and center in most people’s attention haha.

[name_f][/name_f]

I have been thinking about [name_f]Maria[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] while I’ve been responding, I like her a lot and love the Russian diminutive [name_f]Masha[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] I think that’s what I’d probably do? [name_f][/name_f] But I think something like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] or [name_f]Fleur[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] or [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] or [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] or [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] I think she works with so many names! [name_f][/name_f] If [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] was the middle, maybe [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Maria[/name_f] or [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Lou[/name_f], something short and simple and timeless?

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Oh[/name_m] I have no idea what I would name her sibling [name_f][/name_f]- something like [name_f]Jonquil[/name_f] feels too themey, but what else compares? [name_f][/name_f] I know the berry who used it had a son named [name_m]Kaspar[/name_m], and maybe [name_f]Freya[/name_f]? [name_f][/name_f] I feel like Germanic names would work well. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]She[/name_f] does feel quite modern to me, so I’m not sure something that feels fully vintage, like [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] or [name_m]Bertram[/name_m], would fit, but I do think something like [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] would (though would prefer something less mainstream, maybe something like [name_m]Philip[/name_m] and Lottie?).

[name_f][/name_f]

If I had my own [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], I would probably nickname her [name_f]Della[/name_f], [name_f]Vivi[/name_f], or [name_f]Adie[/name_f] (ay-dee), or MAYBE [name_f]Edie[/name_f], even though the sound isn’t really there.

[name_f][/name_f]

Good luck!

i honestly think just about anything is usable! the song and movie help a lot with familiarity and pronunciation as well, but the connection isn’t overwhelming. i think it’s cute :white_heart:

I loved the film growing up, so the association is very strong for me. Whenever I see [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] written down I feel I should hum along to the song. I can see the appeal and think with the right name it can flow nicely too. That being said, I personally would go for something like [name_f]Blossom[/name_f] over [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] as more subtle nod to the song.

[name_f][/name_f]

If I were to use [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] I’d go with something like [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] or [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f].

There is a Catholic missionary, [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] ā€œEdelā€ [name_f]Quinn[/name_f].

[name_f][/name_f]

ā€œThe spelling of her name was inspired by the edelweiss flower. [name_m]Her[/name_m] parents had intended to name her [name_f]Adele[/name_f] but the priest who baptized her thought they meant to call her after the flower and baptized her [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], which was shortened to Edel.ā€

I love the idea of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], because I, too, love the song and the movie. I think that if you’re in the U.S., like me, it would be easier in the middle. That is, unless you’re considering calling her ā€œEdieā€ on a daily basis. But [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] all the time, with spelling confusions and such, I do think would be a hassle.

[name_f][/name_f]

I don’t think the tie to the musical makes the name clunky. If anything, the familiarity makes it LESS clunky.

@OctaviaMay[name_f][/name_f] It’s such[name_f][/name_f] a good lullaby song, isn’t it? It feels so nostalgic and dreamy :sparkles:[name_f][/name_f] I adore[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] is one of those names that is super hard to pair middles with (but I adore her so much that I can’t help but try ), so I love having her in a pair with a name that I love so much. [name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], and [name_f]Bonny[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], and [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Mayella[/name_f], and all[name_f][/name_f] of these…just so perfect :face_holding_back_tears:[name_f][/name_f] Your [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] Sarah-Beth is so incredibly fab, too. [name_f]So[/name_f] stunning. A set of [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], [name_f]Maeblythe[/name_f], [name_f]Pleasance[/name_f], and [name_m]Augustine[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]— oh how dreamy [name_f][/name_f] Your response is so helpful, [name_f]Louise[/name_f]. Although that’s no surprise!

[name_f][/name_f]

@kachenka[name_f][/name_f] I totally agree about your note on sibling names! Especially with [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] being so bold, but also having such substantial ties to media. @atomicginge[name_f][/name_f] Your point about [name_m]The[/name_m] Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f] being almost dated is so interesting! It definitely makes a lot of sense though, most kids probably wouldn’t have the knowledge of it, and the parents of today would be remembering it more from childhood. Perhaps that nostalgia makes it sweeter! [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is so pretty. I love [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] and [name_m]Caspar[/name_m] as brothers for her! [name_f]Edie[/name_f] and [name_m]Edel[/name_m] are both lovely. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

All of her namesakes make her even sweeter, in my opinion. Resistance, strength, resilience, etc…such wonderful qualities that the name would hopefully inspire in a little one! [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] are both such wonderful combos. I love[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Altalune[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] as sisters for her. [name_f]So[/name_f] fun and magical! :rainbow:

I love [name_f]Amy[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f]. [name_f]So[/name_f] very pretty! [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] ā€œEdie,ā€ [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f], [name_f]Opaline[/name_f], [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]Ignatius[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] are all so wonderful together. :herb:

[name_m]The[/name_m] Sound Of [name_f]Music[/name_f][name_f][/name_f] is one of my favorite movies! I actually have a CD of the songs and love listening to it on repeat. We [name_f][/name_f] first watched in [name_m]Vermont[/name_m] with all the mountains so I always associate it with that :mountain:[name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] is one of my favorite songs in the movie and I actually never considered it a name before now.

  1. As much as the meaning is super pretty, I think she could only realistically work in the middle spot. Maybe in the first spot with a nickname though?

  3. I would immediately think of Sound of [name_f]Music[/name_f], but I’m not sure if everyone would.

  6. [name_f][/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] and [name_f]Amaryllis[/name_f] or [name_f]Edelweiss[/name_f] and [name_m]Cypress[/name_m]
  8. [name_f][/name_f]
  9. [name_f]Edie[/name_f]! (I know that the E sounds at the start are different (eh vs ee) but I think it’s adorable!
