I am trying to decide on the spelling for our soon-to-be-born daughter. We would like for her name to be pronounced Eh-vee (with a SHORT e sound at the beginning.)
Her “formal” name will be [name_u]Everly[/name_u], but we want Eh-vee to be the name she goes by in daily life, school, etc.
Please let me know which spelling you think is best, in your opinion. Thank you so much!
[name_f]Evie[/name_f]
[name_f]Evi[/name_f]
[name_f]Evy[/name_f]
If you’re wanting it to be pronounced eh-vee then I would definitely go with [name_f]Evy[/name_f]. [name_f]Evie[/name_f] and [name_f]Evi[/name_f] will be pronounced as ee-vee or eh-vi.
I personally think [name_f]Evie[/name_f] is riveting but I agree with @livelaughlove that that isn’t pronounced “EH-vee”, so therefore my vote would go to [name_f]Evy[/name_f] as well
I like [name_f]Evi[/name_f] for Eh-vee. [name_f]Evy[/name_f] also works, but I just prefer how [name_f]Evi[/name_f] looks.
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] would almost always be Ee-vee.
I agree with the poster who said as long as I know the given name is [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], or if I hear it before I see it spelled, then it doesn’t matter how it’s spelled because I’ll pronounce it the right way. That being said, spelling rules state that in order to show a short vowel sound, the following consonant is doubled (see the difference in words like capped and caped). So, to spell “eh-vee” would need two V’s. But we all know English is a language full of exceptions, so my first comment overrules the rules. If her name is [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] with a short E and you call her [name_f]Evie[/name_f] with a short E, you can spell it however you want (her given name breaks the rules, anyway). Go for the spelling you like the best.
I would pronounce [name_f]Evie[/name_f] as ee-vee. I think either [name_f]Evi[/name_f] or [name_f]Evy[/name_f] could work for eh-vee, I prefer [name_f]Evy[/name_f]
To me, [name_f]Evie[/name_f] would be ee-vee. Because of that, I’d go with either [name_f]Evi[/name_f] or [name_f]Evy[/name_f], though I prefer the former.
My favorite for you is [name_f]Evi[/name_f]. I tend to prefer the [name_f]Evie[/name_f] spelling in a strictly English context but as previous posters have pointed out it’d most likely be pronounced as Eevee.
I was going to say [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (EE-vee) but for [name_u]Everly[/name_u] I would say [name_f]Evy[/name_f] or [name_f]Evi[/name_f] (EH-vee) is best.
[name_f]Evie[/name_f] is my preferred spelling, but I will always only read that as ee-vee. If you want the eh-vee pronunciation, I think your best bet would be [name_f]Evi[/name_f] or [name_f]Evy[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Evi[/name_f] looks better than [name_f]Evy[/name_f], personally.
