Consider this the low-brow version of the ‘names in poems’ post.
When I was young I was always sad that there were no songs for [name]Tara[/name]…so I would sing the song [name]Sarah[/name] with my name in it!
What are some favorite? Any that you would avoid because of a song?
I think I’m turned off from [name]Delilah[/name] by that Plain White Ts song.
A song called [name]Geraldine[/name] has made me see it’s beauty!
Some that I would use because of the song (but probably wouldn’t use if it had never been in the song):
[name]Prudence[/name]
[name]Gloria[/name]
[name]Emily[/name]
Some that I would use either way:
[name]Cecelia[/name]
[name]Layla[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
Some that I would not use because of the song:
[name]Mandy[/name]
[name]Delilah[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name] (I actually love this name, and it’s really not because of the [name]Fleetwood[/name] [name]Mac[/name] song that I wouldn’t use it - It’s because it’s too close to [name]Rhianna[/name])
[name]Roxanne[/name]
I feel the same about [name]Delilah[/name]. [name]Love[/name] the name but don’t like the band.
As for [name]Roxanne[/name]… it’s way too huge a hit [name]IMO[/name]. The name is fine but everywhere poor [name]Roxanne[/name] goes she needs to listen to people singing that to her. [name]Trust[/name] me, it gets old fast.
[name]Jesse[/name]… one of those songs that made the name even better haha “I wish that I had [name]Jesse[/name]'s girl”.
[name]Layla[/name]/[name]Leila[/name] is another one I like thanks so song, I am not a fan of the name but I am a fan of the some so it makes me more accepting.
Let’s not forget how [name]Michael[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] ruined [name]Billie[/name] [name]Jean[/name]. Great song, just unfortunate for the name lol.
[name]Jolene[/name] is such a great song & I love [name]Dolly[/name], but I fear that a girl named [name]Jolene[/name] would get the song sung to her all the time!
There’s this one really catchy song by [name]Jason[/name] Derulo, I think it’s called repeat, and he says “[name]Charlene[/name]'s like a melody in my head…”
At least I think he said [name]Charlene[/name]. I get lyrics wrong all the time.
There’s also [name]Athena[/name] by the Who, [name]Jessica[/name] by [name]Regina[/name] Spektor, [name]Michelle[/name] by the Beatles, and [name]Cecilia[/name] by [name]Simon[/name] and Garfunkle.
[name]Tori[/name] [name]Amos[/name] has too many to count, but she’s opened my eyes to some really odd ones, [name]Ernestine[/name], [name]Marianne[/name], [name]Tallula[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name] (so many beautiful names in it!), [name]Virginia[/name], [name]Scarlet[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Martha[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name], [name]Pandora[/name]… and those are just from titles! (except for [name]Ernestine[/name])
Norwegian singer [name]Thomas[/name] Dybdahl has beautiful songs called [name]Adelaide[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] (and [name]Henry[/name]).
[name]Bat[/name] for Lashes has Prescilla, [name]Sarah[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name] (and [name]Daniel[/name]).
The Ditty Bops has a wonderful song about [name]Kate[/name] (“I may be late, but I’ll be up to date if I can shimmy like my sister [name]Kate[/name]”)
PJ [name]Harvey[/name] has [name]Angelene[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Catherine[/name] and [name]Joy[/name] all on one album (Is this Desire?)
[name]Ana[/name]ïs [name]Mitchell[/name] has [name]Annmarie[/name], [name]Venus[/name] and amazingly enough Shenandoah (!)
Bon [name]Iver[/name] has [name]Emma[/name]
[name]Damien[/name] [name]Rice[/name] has [name]Amie[/name]
[name]Edward[/name] Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have [name]Jade[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name] [name]Wolf[/name] has [name]Augustine[/name] and [name]Damaris[/name]
As a [name]Caroline[/name], I loved my name because of [name]Neil[/name] [name]Diamond[/name] and was fairly mad when Outkast came out with Roses. Hatred. Anyway…
[name]Amy[/name]/ie (Once In [name]Love[/name] with [name]Amy[/name], love. Also [name]Amie[/name] by [name]Damien[/name] [name]Rice[/name] which I just love)
[name]Eileen[/name] (Come on [name]Eileen[/name])
[name]Natalie[/name] (Believe Me [name]Natalie[/name])
[name]Melissa[/name] (Sweet [name]Melissa[/name], I always thought that would be a nice song name to have too)
[name]Mickey[/name]
[name]Valerie[/name]
[name]Sherry[/name] ([name]Sherry[/name] has a couple songs come to think of it!)
[name]Sally[/name] (Mustang [name]Sally[/name])
[name]Jennie[/name] (8675309…)
The only name I like that I wouldnt use for the song is [name]Sharona[/name]. Kind of ruined for me.
I’ve been on the fence about whether [name]Lola[/name] bothers me. I feel like it should, but I love that song!
Oh, there was a song with the name [name]Julie[/name] in it by [name]Bobby[/name] [name]Sherman[/name]. My mom- who happens to be named [name]Julie[/name]- had a crush on him when she was in school, so the song was just a dream for her.
Renée - I’ve always loved the song “Just Walk Away Renée” by the Left Bank, Gwen Stefani’s mn is Renée because of this song, so is Rod Stewart’s daughter.
Irene - Goodnight, Irene - a great song covered by so many people I can’t count but I love the Pogues, Johnny Cash and Leadbelly versions.
Josephine - not an English song but Osez Josephine by Alain Bashung was a favorite song of mine growing up
Dulcinea - Man of La Mancha - Renato Braz does a great version of this
I was singing it when I was pregnant & my mom tried to convince me to use it.
Also, my dad wanted to name me [name]Angie[/name] cause of the stones…he also tried to convince my mom that [name]Keith[/name] [name]Richard[/name] should be my name if I were a boy!
[name]Mathilda[/name] - [name]Little[/name] Comets
[name]Joanna[/name] - [name]Little[/name] Comets
[name]Jennifer[/name] - [name]Little[/name] Comets
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Hill[/name] is a song by Coldplay, and obviously [name]Violet[/name] is becoming a bit more mainstream as a girl’s name.
[name]Bryn[/name] - Vampire Weekend
In the song A-Punk by Vampire Weekend, the first verse says, “[name]Johanna[/name] drove slowly into the city,”
And The Beatles have a fair amount of names; I especially like [name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name].
[name]Janine[/name] - [name]David[/name] [name]Bowie[/name]
[name]Jeane[/name] - The Smiths
[name]Lilian[/name] - Depeche Mode
(Letter to) [name]Elise[/name] - The Cure
[name]Charlotte[/name], (Sometimes) - The Cure
[name]Caroline[/name] - Concrete Blonde
[name]Adrienne[/name] - The Calling
[name]Johanna[/name] - from [name]Sweeney[/name] [name]Todd[/name]
(The Diary of) [name]Jane[/name] - Breaking [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Jane[/name] (Says) - [name]Jane[/name]'s Addiction, (Sweet) [name]Jane[/name] - The [name]Velvet[/name] Underground
[name]Eva[/name] - Orgy
[name]Rebecca[/name] - Tesla
[name]Ariadne[/name] - The Cruxshadows
[name]Severine[/name] - Ego Likeness
[name]Bronte[/name] - Gotye
[name]Silvia[/name] - Miike [name]Snow[/name] (I already LOVED [name]Silvia[/name], so this just sent me over the edge)
[name]Alice[/name]'s (House) - The Psychedelic Furs
[name]One[/name] the same note, I now have a soft spot for [name]Daniel[/name] because of the song by [name]Bat[/name] For Lashes.
The Kinks had [name]Lola[/name]
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said [name]Lola[/name]
L-o-l-a [name]Lola[/name] lo-lo-lo-lo [name]Lola[/name]
This song used to be my roommate’s ringtone, so I know it far better than I would like haha. He says “Shorty’s like a melody” Although it does sound a bit like [name]Charlene[/name], so I see why you thought that
