Grandparent Nicknames 🧦

i’m not sure if a thread like this exists yet but i thought it would be fun to share your nicknames for your grandparents and maybe, if you had any, what nickname you would want your grandchildren to call you!

for example:

my (paternal) grandparents are my grammy and pop-pop, and i think i would like to be marmee or papa with my own grandchildren <3 my partner would be gaia!

Typically, it’s just been [name_f]Nanny[/name_f] and Grandad, however, my great grandad used to be Grandad Mate (as he called everyone ā€˜Mate’)

well, I never met any of my grandfathers, but my paternal grandmother is just Grandma and my maternal grandmother is [name_u]Nana[/name_u]. I did get to meet my great-grandfather and he was [name_f]Papa[/name_f].

when I have kids, my kids are going to have two sets of grandparents on my side, my mom and dad, and then my adopted parents (it’s complicated) so my mom and dad are gong to be Platypus and Grandad. it started as a joke between me and my mom with her calling me [name_m]Little[/name_m] Puggle which is a baby Platypus, so I decided that she’s gonna be Platypus to my kids (not gonna lie, I hope it gets shortened to Platty because that would be adorable). and then my adopted parents are just gonna be Grandma and Grandpa.

when I’m a grandmother someday, I think I want to be [name_u]Puma[/name_u], becuase it’s russian for cougar and I think it would be hilarious.

they’ve all passed but…

my maternal grandparents: grandma & grandad
my paternal grandparents: granny & grandad

I’d probably be happiest with granny or grandma :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

grandparent nicknames aren’t really common where i’m from, but i do call one of my grandmothers mama, because i’d stay over at her house so often when i was really young that i thought she was my second mum

i never met either of my grandfathers, but i have someone who’s like a grandfather to me (my grandmother’s brother) who i call dodo (a nickname for his name, theodoros, that only i use)

i’d probably either be just-grandma (in the language of the country i live in at the time), or ā€œyiayiaā€ with my own grandkids!

i’m english and almost everyone here calls their grandmother nan, nana or nanny! for me, my maternal grandmother is nanny and my paternal grandmother nana. as for grandfathers, both of them are grandad for me!

in america, i was quite shocked that grandparents had so many names!! like meemaw, peepaw (my friend’s grandparents), mimi, gigi, grandmommy & grandpoppy are some of the ones i’ve heard!

i think i would like my grandmother name to be nanny or nana

my grandma is [name_u]Nana[/name_u] šŸ«¶šŸ¼ we sometimes affectionally nickname her [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], so that’s another of hers

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents all got divorced and remarried, so I have 8

Grandma & Grandpa
[name_u]Nana[/name_u] & Papaw (NAN-nuh, PAP-paw)
Memere & Pawpaw
[name_f]Honey[/name_f] & Pappy (but mostly I just called him by his name, Norman)

[name_f]My[/name_f] nephew calls my parents Yaya & Grumpy, which fit well actually. [name_f]My[/name_f] two great grandmothers who I knew were Mawmaw [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (diminutive of her last name) and Mawmaw [name_u]June[/name_u].

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents were grandma and grandad (or ā€˜gangang’ when I was very small!) one one side, and nana on the other. I know for a fact my mum will not want to be nana like her mother, I think she might end up as [name_f]Bee[/name_f] or [name_f]Bibi[/name_f] because it’s her initial and she loves bees :honeybee: Personally, I’d be fine with traditional old grandma if the time comes!

my paternal grandparents are Babci and Gramps. my Babci’s family is polish and Babci is a polish word for grandma

my maternal grandparents are [name_u]Nana[/name_u] and B’pa. when my sister was a baby, she couldn’t say ā€œgrandpaā€ so she called him B’pa instead and it stuck. he especially loves it because his own father was G’pa to my mom and aunt :purple_heart:

On my paternal side - Grandma & Grandpa

On my maternal side - Yaya/Yayi (prn JAH-jah/JAH-jee) & Dad (I was the first grandkid, I saw my mom calling him dad and copied her, and then my siblings and cousin copied me)

For me personally I think I’d want to be Aracoel (TaĆno word for grandma), Grandmama or [name_f]Ela[/name_f] (short for Abuela)

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents are grandma, papa, nonna, and then an unusual nickname for my grandfather that I won’t say because I think they use it a lot online!

[name_f]My[/name_f] mother and I both want to be called nonna by any future grandchildren.

I’ve got:
[name_u]Nana[/name_u] and Grandpa [name_m]Mike[/name_m]
Nonee and [name_f]Papa[/name_f]
Grandpa

I’d like to be anything, really. Nonee or Grammy I can especially imagine!

I call my mom Marmee, so I hope my kids might call her that, too, one day… :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents:
Grammy & Grampy
Grandma & Grandpa

[name_f]My[/name_f] great-grandparents (that I ever knew):
[name_m]Gram[/name_m]
[name_u]Nana[/name_u] & Bampa

[name_f]My[/name_f] parents to my niblings + soon-to-be child:
Grammy & Poobah

What SO’s mom wants to be called:
Meemaw (this took us by surprise as it’s really not usually a thing where we live)

What I’d like to be called:
hmm… possibly Grandy. SO would like to be Bampa

my grandparents are grandma + papa and granny + grandpa! my great grandparents that i met were great grandma, and bampop + werwey! :sparkles:

maternal grandma - gammie
paternal grandma - nana
paternal grandpa - jimpa

[name_f]My[/name_f] maternal grandparents were Grandma and Grandpa. [name_f]My[/name_f] paternal grandparents were [name_u]Nana[/name_u] and Grandpa [name_u]Jack[/name_u] or GJ.

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandparents:
Grandma & Grandpa
Gramma & Grandad

For myself, hmm… I’m not sure about gender neutral grandparent nicknames! I feel like [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] would be fun

[name_f]My[/name_f] grandma is [name_f]Amma[/name_f]! I’m not sure how it started; it was passed down by my older cousins, but it fits her perfectly and i love it!

I would be so pleased to be [name_f]Amma[/name_f] as well someday :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
