Sorry if this will confuse anyone or if it’s extremely long!
Our second child is on her way and I’m going to go insane! With our son’s name, I got to choose his first name and my husband chose his middle name ([name_m]Jackson[/name_m] [name_m]Colt[/name_m] “[name_m]Jax[/name_m]”) and agreed we’d alternate who got to pick the first name and who got to pick the middle name. This time, it’s my husband’s turn to pick a first name and I don’t think I can make good on this deal. He’s big into hunting/guns/other things of the sort and wants to use a gun name as her first name (like how he chose [name_m]Jax[/name_m]'s middle name). His top 3 names are Magnum “[name_f]Maggie[/name_f]”, [name_m]Cannon[/name_m] “[name_f]Annie[/name_f]”, and Savage “[name_f]Ava[/name_f]”. I honestly don’t mind the nicknames but I cannot stand the first names! He said if he doesn’t pick a gun name he wants something “cool” like MoonLight, Booldrayne, or [name_m]Midnight[/name_m]. One thing we can agree on is that we’d like for her to have a nickname like her brother. [name_f]My[/name_f] actual question is, can you think of any “gun names” or names similar to the sort that are actual names (I don’t like [name_f]Beretta[/name_f] or [name_m]Remington[/name_m]) that I could suggest to my husband? Or even some names that go well with [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] and have a more unusual nickname? I don’t even know what I’m asking for…I’m just asking for anything that I can throw at my husband so our daughter won’t have one of the above as her name! I haven’t really said an official middle name choice yet, but I am leaning towards [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Noelle[/name_f], or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] (all have family importance).
Are there any famous female marksmen that have good names? Maybe that could be a compromise.
I hadn’t thought of that! Thank you for the idea, I’ll definitely look into it!
All I can think of is [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or [name_u]Oakley[/name_u].
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Oakley[/name_u], as in [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Oakley[/name_u]?
LOL, great minds think alike.

I like [name_f]Annie[/name_f] but only as a nickname (and I don’t like [name_m]Cannon[/name_m]). We definitely want her to have a more full name with a nickname like [name_m]Jax[/name_m]. [name_u]Oakley[/name_u] is actually my husband’s godson’s name!
What about [name_u]Ripley[/name_u]? It’s not a gun name (that I know of) but I think it’s cute for a girl!
[name_u]Ripley[/name_u] doesn’t sound very cute/pretty to me and I can’t think of any nice nicknames for it either, sorry!
Not exactly a gun name, but how about [name_u]Rebel[/name_u]? You could nickname her [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Reba[/name_f].
Or how about a name that means warrior?:
- [name_f]Alessia[/name_f] (means “defending warrior”)
- [name_f]Aloisa[/name_f] (means “renowned warrior”)
- [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] (means “female warrior”)
- [name_u]Clancy[/name_u] (means “red-haired warrior”)
- [name_u]Dustin[/name_u] (means “brave warrior”)
- [name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Luisa[/name_f]/[name_f]Luiza[/name_f] (means “renowned warrior”)
- [name_f]Marcheline[/name_f] (means “warrior”)
- [name_u]Owen[/name_u] (means “young warrior; well-born”)
- [name_u]Sacha[/name_u]/[name_u]Sascha[/name_u] (means “defending warrior”)
There’s also [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Martha[/name_f]- “Calamity [name_f]Jane[/name_f]” was born [name_f]Martha[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Canary[/name_f]. [name_f]Hedda[/name_f] Gabler, from [name_m]Ibsen[/name_m]'s play of the same name, had pistols she shot “for fun” but that may not be what you’re looking for.
Googled a bit and if outlaw/cowgirl names would work too, here are some [name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u] heroines: 12 Renowned Women of the Wild West | HowStuffWorks. There’s also the outlaw [name_f]Belle[/name_f] [name_f]Starr[/name_f], full name [name_f]Myra[/name_f] [name_f]Maybelle[/name_f] [name_f]Shirley[/name_f] [name_u]Reed[/name_u] [name_f]Starr[/name_f]. Or [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Parker[/name_u], the [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] of “[name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] and [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]”, or [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f] [name_m]Borden[/name_m] whom the play Blood Relations was based on.
I get that outlaws aren’t a great association for a child though! (I wouldn’t be comfortable with gun names myself either though, personally, but to each their own.)
Oh, and the actress who played Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun was Betty Hutton, born Elizabeth June Thornburg.
I like [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] but worry about the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association?
I was looking at some famous female marksmen and found [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] who was the rival of [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Oakley[/name_u]; I’ll probably suggest [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] “[name_f]Lily[/name_f]” to my husband!
bonfireazalea, it’s funny you added that link; that was the one I was just looking at before I saw your comment! I think [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] is really cute but it seems more like a nickname to me (and if we did use it as a full name, it doesn’t have a nickname option)
I don’t know anything about guns, but after reading your post, [name_u]Sierra[/name_u] popped into my mind. Maybe there’s a reason for this association, maybe not, but I thought I’d throw it out there. Either way, I think [name_u]Sierra[/name_u] and [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] sound terrific together.
Good luck finding something both you and your husband love, and here’s hoping you don’t end up with a daughter named “[name_f]Bloodrayne[/name_f]”

blazinjax- Haha [name_f]My[/name_f] friend is a [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f], just [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f]. We call her BonBon sometimes. I’m not a fan of nicknames as full names myself but it’s definitely workable. Nicknames, especially family nicknames, don’t have to be related to the name- [name_f]Bonnie[/name_f] in Gone With the Wind was a [name_f]Eugenie[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]!

Hm, that’s a unique situation. I’ll try to get creative here.
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]: goddess of the hunt. Nickname [name_f]Missy[/name_f].might be a little exotic next to [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], but no weirder than [name_m]Cannon[/name_m], lol.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] nickname [name_m]Arrow[/name_m]: this would be so cool. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] would go perfectly with [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], and is sweet /normal enough for you. But Comes with sensible badass hunting nickname for daddy!
[name_u]Avery[/name_u]: someone suggested this online because apparently it’s a hunting gear brand? Nickname [name_u]Avi[/name_u].
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] nickname [name_u]Scout[/name_u]: another great option for you - normal name, awesome hunting-esque nickname for dad. I think this seems like a perfect solution. It’s on my list in this format too. (If you don’t want to call her [name_u]Scout[/name_u], you could always use [name_f]Carly[/name_f], [name_f]Letty[/name_f], etc.)
Xylia: pronounced zye-lee-uh, a Latin name meaning “wood dweller” - just like a hunter! Once again, a little out there next to jackson, but meaning is spot on. Nicknames Xylie, [name_f]Lia[/name_f] if preferred.
I hope it all works, out, and that you don’t end up with a daughter named [name_m]Cannon[/name_m]. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] I helped and best of luck!
I went to Google and looked up a list of firearm names and here is what I came across. Take Christensen Arms for example and call her something similar to that. Like [name_f]Christine[/name_f] or [name_f]Kristen[/name_f]. Or [name_m]Iver[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m] Firearms and call her [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] if you like that and you could make her initials IJ with a J middle name. What about [name_f]Kimber[/name_f]? [name_u]Marlin[/name_u] is another that I found. These are just some ideas. I’m not really sure if that helps.
I actually have a really bad association with the name [name_u]Sierra[/name_u], sorry! I do really like the ideas of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]! I’m not a fan of [name_m]Arrow[/name_m] or [name_u]Scout[/name_u] but those could be nicknames my husband uses!
Right now, [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] “[name_f]Lily[/name_f]” (after [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m]), [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] “[name_m]Arrow[/name_m]”, and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] “[name_u]Scout[/name_u]/[name_f]Carly[/name_f]” are my top three. What are some other cute nicknames for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] that I could use/like a little more? I’m not a fan of [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] but that’s all I can think of!
Oh, you could definitely use [name_f]Callie[/name_f] or [name_f]Carli[/name_f]!
I like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and I get the idea, but I’m not a fan of [name_m]Iver[/name_m]. I also like the idea of using initials (not sure if that would be “enough” for my husband) but at the same time I do want to use an important family name as a middle. It’s definitely something I’ll have to take into consideration! I have a half-sister named [name_u]Kimberly[/name_u] that I, to be honest, cannot stand so [name_f]Kimber[/name_f] is just a bit too close for me
