We are expecting a girl in [name_u]December[/name_u] and want to name her [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] after a relative. Are we crazy?
It sounded like a great idea but now we’re freaking out trying to decide. Are we essentially “naming a boy [name_f]Sue[/name_f]”?
Not so much “naming a boy [name_f]Sue[/name_f],” but more so “naming a boy [name_f]Maisie[/name_f].” If that makes sense lol, probably not. I mean, I see how it could cross into the girls, but I also want to condemn it and say get a girl name.
[name_m]How[/name_m] would you feel being called [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], knowing it’s a traditional boy name? That’s what I would ask myself if I couldn’t decide.
I guess [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is fairly girl-friendly in that it’s similar to [name_u]Harley[/name_u], [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], and [name_u]Avery[/name_u] which are used on girls. One difference with those is they are derived from surnames whereas [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is originally a male first name. So it is similar to using a name like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], or [name_u]Toby[/name_u] on a girl. I think some girls would be fine with that and some would hate it, so you will just have to make your best guess about what kind of girl you are going to get
I don’t personally think it’s a good idea. There’s a lot of similar names that work for girls to honour a [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], or you could use it as a MN but I would avoid it for a first name. It’s just too solidly masculine imo.
I don’t think it sounds good for a girl. I would not like being named [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], unfortunately.
I would go with a similar-sounding, more feminine alternative like [name_f]Harlow[/name_f].
I agree that it is not the best… [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] just seems very heavy to me. I would love to suggest [name_u]Haven[/name_u]!
Not a fan.
Personally, I just don’t get it. Of all the beautiful girl names out there, why pick a boy name? Maybe you could honor a female relative and save [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] for a future boy. [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] in a boy is super cute.
There are a lot of ways you could honor [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] that aren’t naming your daughter his actual name. I would recommend [name_u]Haley[/name_u], [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], or [name_u]Harley[/name_u]. I know you love your relative but I don’t think you necessarily need to use his name in this form in order to demonstrate that. A variation honors the person just as effectively, in my opinion. Or if you really want to use [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], maybe it could be her middle name?
Weirdly, I prefer it on a girl.
[name_u]Haven[/name_u], [name_u]Harley[/name_u], and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] would all be good options. On another site people asked the same question and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was suggested as it means battle maid, and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is battle worthy. Maybe a different family member also related to [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], his mother, maybe? Possibly even [name_u]Havana[/name_u]? Or [name_f]Hallie[/name_f]!
I don’t think it is any worse than most names i hear. I think it is spunky, and cute!
It’s not bad, but in my opinion it’s a little heavy. I’m not a huge fan of it for either gender personally, but I prefer it on a boy. Maybe use it as a middle name?
I like it! I think it’s great. I don’t think gender should be a significant factor in the name you choose, honestly. I know many on this site would disagree with me, but in the real world, I’ve known [name_m]WAY[/name_m] more women who have resented being given a frilly girly name, and none who were upset that they had a gender neutral name.
If you were confident, I’d say go for it. Since you’re hesitating, it might be best to use it as a middle name.
(I’d use a traditionally male honour name in the middle but not as a first, so my advice is probably biased/influenced by my personal naming style)
I kind of love it? But [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] seems a lot more wearable
It’s a no from me. If you have to use it put it in the middle.
I’m personally not a fan. It sounds to me like an older male. I agree with others who have mentioned names with similar meanings as [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], or maybe a name like [name_f]Harlow[/name_f]. If it’s really important to you to name her after that relative, did he have a middle name you could work with instead? If you would really like to use [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], I’d suggest using it in the middle.
I think [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] would be a cute middle name for a girl! I also agree with the suggestions of [name_u]Harley[/name_u] & [name_f]Harlow[/name_f].
However, if I met a girl named [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], I probably wouldn’t even think twice about it (and maybe even compliment her on her unique name)
so if you truly love it, I say go for it!
I agree with this.
