So I’m really struggling with boys names and just keep coming back to [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. I just love it. My DH suggested it and we just always talk about it - and have done for a while.
I live in the UK and even though unique names are accepted here, I can’t help feeling this name might be a little too heavy? And open to sniggers?! I feel cautious about it and wonder how it will wear over someone’s lifetime.
What I really want to know is, do you know an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]? Have you ever met one? What did it make you think? [name_m]How[/name_m] do you think this will age and will it become more reguarly heard? I suggested it to my two best friends who laughed out loud, but by the end of our dinner were both fairly okay with it.
We’re not pregnant yet but have planned TTC. In terms of any child we have, my DH is big into sports and if his family history is anything to go by, I’m pretty sure it would be a very active little one and should wear a big name well!
I love the name [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. It’s definitely unique, but I think it’s historical/mythological background keeps it from being “weird”. I’ve only ever met kids with [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] as a surname. If you really do want to use [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] as a first name (it sounds like it appeals to you a lot!) then I would go for it! You could use it as a first name and then give him a very traditional middle name to balance things out.
In my experience, names always seem more normal and appeal to people more when a kid is actually named that name, since the child will give it personality and more of a personal connection to whoever hears it. Sometimes when people hear possible names, they dislike it more because it doesn’t actually belong to a child.
I’ve never met an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] but I really like it-- definitely a striking name. I do think of the famous novel [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] Shrugged by [name_f]Ayn[/name_f] [name_m]Rand[/name_m] (now a film), so I would just make sure that you like the character/reference :). I think it’s a fabulous choice though. Different and strong.
I have never met an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], but I would certainly love to. I love it as a name and I personally would rather see someone named [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], which has history and backstory and is lovely and unique without being made-up, rather than an overused, popular name which everyone has heard of.
Another reason why I think you should go for it is that I can tell that you really like it, and if your husband likes it too then definitely go with. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let what anyone else says sway you if you really love it! Good luck!
I have! well, kinda - I follow a travel blog written by a woman and she called her son [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] (he was born last year). She’s based in Germany. It’s obvious why she chose that as a name
I’m from [name_f]Canada[/name_f], but I’ve never met an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. I love the name and I think if you love it, definitely go for it! It’s so cool! I don’t think it’ll stick out in a sore thumb way, but it will stand out (in a good way). Also love [name_m]Albus[/name_m] which is a very similar sound.
Ooh that sounds so interesting, is it a public blog?
Thanks everyone for all the responses so far, it’s lovely to hear the positive words.
Please keep posting, especially if you’d like to meet an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] or already know one.
here is the blog : http://www.travelettes.net/
there are several writers but it’s the creator of the website who called her son [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. she mentionned him in 1 or 2 articles where she was talking about travelling with an infant.
The first thing that comes to mind is [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], the body-builder, although I don’t know that many would think of that. Would it maybe be a hard name to live up to? I think someone with a big personality and a big, athletic physique, would be best to wear this name. If your child turns out to be bookish and a quieter person, I’m not sure it would work well. [name_m]Just[/name_m] some thoughts…
Since you live on the UK, just don’t call your baby [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_m]Romeo[/name_m], [name_u]Cruz[/name_u] of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and you’ll be ok.
Never met an [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] but it sounds cool. [name_m]Just[/name_m] give them a simple middle name in case the child wants to tone it down a bit.
I love [name_m]Jenson[/name_m] Button’s name. It was probably unusual when they named him that, but fashionable now.
I’ve not met anyone named [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], but I adore the name (it’s one of my own top middle name options). I love both the mythological side of it, as well as the word-name/wanderlust side of it. I do think many may raise their eyebrows at such a name, but then no matter what name you choose, you’ll get that kind of reaction , so I say go for it. You both obviously love the name - be brave and give that kid a quirky yet brilliant name!
