My main character needs a name with a meaning related to sleep, dreams, resting, visions, etc. I would like the name to be a family name but that was before I realized how few names there are that actually have one of these meanings. So I need help ANY suggestions are gladly welcomed! Preferably easy to pronounce or has a simple nickname would be lovely. My character is an 18 year old girl with a very distinctive family that goes back a long way. Her last name is “[name]Sanders[/name]”. I’ve already written a good chunk of the book but still don’t have a name.
Names I’ve found:
[name]Imena[/name]
[name]Aisling[/name] (pronounced [name]ASH[/name]-ling, [name]ASH[/name]-lin or ash-LEEN)
[name]Darsha[/name] - to see, to perceive, to have vision
Darshana - worthy of seeing
[name]Sibley[/name], [name]Sibyl[/name], [name]Sybella[/name] - seer, oracle
Ramla - divination
Roya, Ruya - dream, premonition, vision
[name]Isleen[/name] - related to [name]Aisling[/name]
Nidra - the goddess of sleep
Pasithea - wife of the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos, and one of the Graces
Thank You so much for your suggestions, I’ve really taken a liking to [name]Sybil[/name] (a different spelling) Nidra and [name]Aisling[/name] (nickname [name]ASH[/name])
[name]Aisling[/name]/[name]Aislin[/name]/[name]Isleen[/name] (really like this one)
[name]Sybella[/name]
[name]Marzena[/name]-polish names meaning ‘dreamed one’
[name]Narcissa[/name]: Feminine form of Latin [name]Narcissus[/name], meaning “numbness; sleep.”
Chelem-Aramaic, meaning dream
Dromena-Dutch, means dream
[name]Penelope[/name]-Greek, means [name]Dream[/name] [name]Weaver[/name]
Sovanna-Cambodian, means golden; dream
Winta-Amharic, means dream gift
[name]Sanders[/name] is a good choice since the Sandman is a well known character related to sleep.
What about instead of a name meaning sleep you used a name that has a connection to sleep or dreams.
For example, [name]Joseph[/name] in the Bible had several prophetic dreams.
[name]Sigmund[/name] - for Freud who wrote a famous book on dreams
[name]Gregor[/name] - for [name]Franz[/name] [name]Kafka[/name]'s character in Metamorphosis
[name]Alice[/name] - for [name]Lewis[/name] [name]Caroll[/name]'s character who dreamed her experience
[name]Van[/name] - for [name]Rip[/name] [name]Van[/name] Winkle
etc.
[name]Cassandra[/name] would be nice. She was a Trojan princess who was cursed with visions by [name]Apollo[/name] that no one ever believed. You could use the nn [name]Cassie[/name].
I really like the name [name]Cassandra[/name] as it is, so that would be one of my top picks, if I were you. I also like [name]Sybella[/name] (I prefer it rather than [name]Sybil[/name]), and [name]Isleen[/name]. I also think that [name]Aisling[/name] is a great name for the character, anyways, if you like that.
I looked at the list and noticed that someone was confused about pronunciation. I thought it was just me! (I actually know how to pronounce [name]Aisling[/name], though! Most of the time I feel like I’m the only one who hasn’t heard the pronunciation of these names before!!! :{) (mustache smiley face)
