Help us name a third girl!

Last name is a very common name with English roots. Older siblings are ed1th (we call her Ed1e), cl@rk, lou1sa. I love all of their names!

Some names we are considering are Cecily (I’ve always loved it, my husband says it’s hard to say and has never liked it as much), Ainsley (we have a mutual friend with this name, which is sort of weird, but have both always liked it) and Catherine (but calling her Cate). I don’t like Katie. I also like Cece as a nickname but that didn’t seem to get him there. Other names I like that he doesn’t are Margot and Annie. Another name he likes is Margaret (I knew a mean one though and don’t like the association). We’ve talked about Jane but our last name starts with J, which might be a bit much.

Help! Any way to narrow this down or get us excited about a choice! Have always felt good about our kids name but a third girl name is really throwing us for a loop - definitely our last kid though!

[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] to Nameberry and congratulations on your baby girl!

Your other children’s names are gorgeous. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter has a little friend called Ed1e and it’s totally fabulous

I think of your ideas so far, [name_f]Margot[/name_f] feels like the perfect fit. It’s got the same vintagey, British vibe and fits beautifully stylistically but has a very distinct sound. If you like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and he likes Margaret, how about [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nicknamed Margot? A classic name with a sweet and cool nickname for everyday use, just like your eldest daughter. Other lovely [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nicknames include Maggie, Pearl, Daisy, Greta, Meg… such a versatile name which might allow you to meet in the middle in terms of style.

I do really like your other choices too. [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] is a wonderful name – sweet but substantial, and very uncommon even here in the UK. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] “Cate” and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are both chic and classic, and [name_f]Annie[/name_f] is sweet and whimsical. The only one I don’t like from your current list is Ainsley, which feels much more modern and androgynous than your general style.

A few more ideas for you…

[name_f]Annabel[/name_f] “Annie”
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]

Your older kids’ names are lovely! I want to put in a vote for Jane–I adore it, I think it fits perfectly with your sibset, and I actually really like the idea of it with an alliterative surname. From Cecily, Ainsley, and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] “Cate,” the latter is my favorite. But I don’t love that [name_m]Clark[/name_m] and [name_f]Cate[/name_f] are both one-syllable, starts with “C” names. Does that bother you? I also love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and Annie, but it sounds like maybe those are off the table? Other suggestions…

[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] “Bea”
[name_u]Camille[/name_u] “Millie”
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] “Dottie”
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f] “Annie”
[name_f]Marjorie[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] “Romy”

I love [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] “Cate” for you!

Ed1th, Cl@rk, Lou1sa, &…

[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Muriel[/name_f] / [name_f]Murielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Mariel[/name_f] / [name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] / Mary-Grace / Marygrace
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] / Mary-Ellen / [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f]
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] / [name_f]Elanor[/name_f] / [name_f]Elinor[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanora[/name_f] / Elanora / Elinora
[name_f]Nell[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] the best out of those options.
Also, what about Claire? (Alt Clare)

Your kids have great names!

I love [name_f]Cecily[/name_f] for you! So pretty and lovely.

Annabel, Carys, Amelie, Anya, Celeste, [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] came to mind

What about Pippa, Charlotte, or Claire?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

Your kids’ names are lovely!

Here are my thoughts on the names that you’re considering:

Cecily-It’s so pretty & friendly & unique. I agree that it could be a little tricky to say correctly if you’re not familiar with it. And that could get annoying.

Ainsley-Now, I think that this name is awkward to say. It just doesn’t flow right to me. But if you like it & you & your husband are okay w/the friend association, it’s probably not a big deal.

Catherine-Catherine nn [name_f]Cate[/name_f] is polished & classic. And I’m w/you; I love Cate, but not Katie. And I fear it would be at least occasionally unavoidable. I think that the nn [name_f]Cece[/name_f] is okay though. Especially if you gave her a ‘C’ mn. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] Cecily!

Margot-I like it okay, & it goes well w/your crew. I hear it way too often though, so it doesn’t sparkle much.

Annie-So sweet & old fashioned but fresh. I definitely prefer it as a nn. Maybe you can talk your husband into Anne, Annabelle, Annabella, Annelise, [name_f]Annika[/name_f] or [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] nn Annie.

Margaret-Good solid name, but definitely hard to shake a mean girl association.

Jane-A nice classic, but I don’t think that two 'J’s usually sound great. Sometimes alliteration is fine depending on the letter, but for some reason two Js are over kill.

How about [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] or [name_f]Celestine[/name_f] with the NN Cece. I also think [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is the much prettier version with the NN of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or Maggie.
Perhaps you may like [name_f]Martha[/name_f] or Mabel.

Ignoring the J thing for a moment, what about Jessamy? Like Cecily…

Congratulations on baby girl! Seconding the suggestions of [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] (nn Cece), Sylvia/Sylvie, Daisy, and Georgia.

I like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] nn Cate! So pretty

I love the suggestion Celeste, Emmeline, Florence.

I like [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] but it may be too much!

Thank you Katinka! I’m not sure how to tag people so hopefully this works!

I looove the name Ed1e - we haven’t met another yet it feels very current. highly recommend for anyone considering!

Your comment and others really helped me eliminate Ainsley. The only one we know is a very smart irish girl from [name_f]Chicago[/name_f] - I’m seeing that’s not how people usually associate the name!

I love some of these other suggestions - going to run them past my husband!

Thank you dandy_orchid! I actually love Jane. But if you knew we were J0nes, would that change your feeling? It’s definitely a strong move!

I actually like one syllable hard C names- we’ve always really loved the sound of Clark. So the similarity doesn’t bother me.

I love some of htese other ideas too - a good friend just did [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn “Bea” and I love it! Going to run them past my husband - thanks!

You’re welcome! To tag someone, just type an @ sign and then their username with no space in between. Like this: @mb22

Good luck!

Oooh I think of that as a boys name because of a [name_f]Georgette[/name_f] Heyer novel.

I actually love it but with our short J last name it’s just TOO catchy! Thank you for the suggestion Harvest-Edellion!

Thank you @katinka !
