Honest Feedback on the name Elowyn

Okay, Berries… I need your honest feedback on the name Elowyn. My husband and I both love the name itself and the nickname possibilities of both [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] and [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f]. My husband is set on this name. However, I’m just not sure if it’s too much/trendy or the spelling is too odd. I know the correct/traditional spelling is [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] and I’m usually a stickler for traditional spellings but [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] doesn’t seem to lend itself as well to our favored nicknames. We appreciate any and all honest feedback. Thanks in advance!

I definitely prefer the [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] spelling. Elowyn looks a little made up to me, even though, I think it might be a correct variation. I don’t see why you can’t still use your nicknames with the [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] spelling. [name_m]Bob[/name_m] is a nn for [name_m]Robert[/name_m] and [name_m]Dick[/name_m] for [name_m]Richard[/name_m] and neither of those are really obvious in the names themselves.

I much prefer the correct [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] spelling. Putting the y in seems to take away a lot of the magical charm to me and adds it to that collection of names where people replace the vowel with a y to make it seem more special (though I don’t actually think that’s your intention here!).

It shouldn’t be a bar to giving her the nickname you want. A nickname is just a play on the original name and as pp says, a lot of nicknames don’t even resemble the name they’re from.

I much prefer [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], but Elowyn isn’t really bad.

Stick with the original spelling and still call her [name_u]Wyn[/name_u]

I have no problem with the Elowyn spelling. It has an old English feel to it, rather than looking trendy and made-up, to me. Very pretty name!

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is a Cornish word. Spelling it incorrectly would be tacky imo.

I love Elowyn! Go for it. I do prefer it spelled [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] but I too love the nickname [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] and would prefer for there to be a more obvious connection. Either way, beautiful name.

I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]! I don’t really like made up spellings or putting y’s in place of other vowels… But Elowyn doesn’t look that bad. As far as nicknames, you can for sure use your favorites without changing the spelling of the real name!

Great name. I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f] are acceptable nicknames for [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] too, just like [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] can be a nickname for [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]. They’re kind of interchangeable. But I do understand wanting the spelling to be there. Elowyn nn [name_u]Wyn[/name_u]/[name_f]Wynnie[/name_f] is a fine choice. Dont beat yourself up about the traditional spelling. Only name-nerds would care, and i would hardly call Elowyn a butchering, just an alternative spelling. Congrats!

I think Elowyn is beautiful! It’s not too trendy for me.

I agree with what’s been said here. Elowyn isn’t too awful, but it really seems an unnecessary alteration of a beautiful Cornish name that doesn’t get much exposure as it is. I think it does the name a disservice to tinker with it, honestly, and it does make it appear that you’re trying to jump on the tryndee wagon. (I also personally feel that if you’re going with a choice from a different country or culture, especially if the language it stems from is endangered or underrepresented, the spelling and pronunciation ought to be left alone out of respect.)

If you want to call her Winnie or Winn, peachy - call her that and keep the original spelling. No one tells the parents of a William that they can’t call him Bill because there isn’t a B in it.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] the name, only spelled [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. Elowyn looks trendy and does a bit of a disservice to the name, in my opinion. I agree with everything @kimigrace said.

Great name choice, btw!

It’s not my personal style. For me it’s a bit “out there”. Having said that, I can appreciate the melodic sound and the femininity. Perhaps [name_f]Eliana[/name_f] is similar and a bit more wearable.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] even if spelled Elowyn. Here in the US I doubt very much anyone would take exception to the y except the hardcore name nerds like us berries.

I see no reason why u couldn’t still call her [name_u]Wynn[/name_u], and spell it [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (which is beautiful btw). A nickname is what you make of it. There was a guy in high school named [name_m]Victor[/name_m]…and all our friends just called him Person… if he can go by Person, then an [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] can definitely go by [name_u]Wynn[/name_u] or [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f].

We named our daughter Elowyn [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]! I saw both spellings & really just prefer the Y, I also didn’t want so many E’s throughout her name since there is also one in our last name. I like the look of it & although I can respect where people are coming from about an old language, we wanted to have our own twist on it!

I really like the name Elowyn/en! I think the y makes it look more trendy and “out there” then the e spelling. However, if they y spelling is the one you love, I think it works nicely!

Edited:

Congratulations on Elowyn [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]! I love the FN/MN combination!

I think the original spelling is better, and you can still use the nicknames you like.

[name_f]Susan[/name_f]

Agreed. I’ve heard of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], so I can certainly see [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] getting [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] or [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f], too. Are you tied to the [name_f]Wynnie[/name_f] spelling? I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would be gorgeous! I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].
