We live in the UK. My husband will only consider [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], or [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] for a girls names.
I have offered [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but he feels she needs a “proper” name.
I have said no to [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] as bel features in my name.
So to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], what do you honestly think of [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]?
I am totally lost with names for a girl. I feel like I have seen so many names that nothing feels right or special anymore.
At first, the spelling looked like a butchered form of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. But the more I think about how this name might be pronounced out loud, the more accepting I am of it. I think it’s a pretty name and so is the spelling. (I do like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] best though!)
I don’t know anything at all about the situations regarding your husband and family, but I suggest talking to him about being more open to different names. Let him know how you are lost and how the other names don’t fit well with you. Naming your child should be a mutual decision that makes you both happy but thats just my opinion of course.
What about [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Embeth[/name_f]? [name_f]Elisabet[/name_f] is a pretty version. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is very nice. You can shorten it to [name_f]Elise[/name_f] (ah-LEES, soft ‘s’), [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_u]Lisa[/name_u], [name_f]Lise[/name_f] (leeze).
Finally, my favourite would be [name_f]Elizabella[/name_f].
I actually knew a girl named [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] in high school. I’m in the US, but I thought it was a different and interesting version of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].
As far as the other names go, I think it just depends on what you’ll call her for a nickname. I can understand wanting a “proper” name rather than a nickname-name, but that doesn’t mean that you’d need to use their full name all the time. I know a lot of girls named [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] who go by [name_f]Liz[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzy[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], etc. Similarly, if you had a daughter named [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], you could still just call her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_f]Margot[/name_f].
I’m actually with your husband with the proper name thing. Maybe it’s because in my country you can’t use nicknames as a name on the birth certificate. From your choices I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. It has plenty of nicknames options. You don’t need to use her full name all the time. Like @erinbeth says, you can still call her [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] if her name is [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. You can still use [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. Personally, my favourite [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] nickname is [name_f]Lizbeth[/name_f]. but there is plenty of options…
Instead of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] how about - [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_f]Elise[/name_f], [name_f]Elisabetta[/name_f], Elsabeth
Instead of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] how about -[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], and I totally think [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is a proper name!!!
Thank you everyone. We just have different tastes in names, I’m a bit more left field while he likes traditional names. We just can’t find a middle where we are both happy. Does anyone know any traditional type names that are a bit more unusual? Thank you!
He also likes [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], which I think is nice but becoming popular with the vintage name trend. It just doesn’t seem to be the one!!
I think your husband probably likes names like:
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f], [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f]
A bit more uncommon but still traditional British:
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Thomasina[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Clarissa[/name_f]
I would also throw in [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (but I personally have never heard it in the UK, more in the US) and my own name [name_f]Susanna/name_f.
Thank you! He does like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. We will see if they might convince him from his other choices. I’ve added [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] to the list. It might be a bit far out but I like it. [name_f]Frances[/name_f] could be a winner for him. I hope we can get this sorted out soon or perhaps the baby will be a boy and we will be fine as we have agreed on that!
I really like [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]. There’s also [name_f]Lisbeth[/name_f]. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] is a great name that gets you close to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I am not a fan of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], it sounds so harsh. Thus, I would use a variation of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or use that as the full name. Good luck!
[name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] may come across to people as a distortion/or abbreviation/ or nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I think there would be a risk of frequent misspellings (z/s - b/p). My recommendations are [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Susanna[/name_f], [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f], [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], and [name_f]Francine[/name_f]. I wish you the best of luck in coming up with the right name.
[name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] to me feels incomplete— like you just cut two vowels out of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. However, I have less issues with [name_f]Lisbet[/name_f] and [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], because they differ more. I really like [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f], in fact!!!
I prefer the [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] spelling it’s my mums name (her mums called [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]) so [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] just looks wrong to me. It’s a gorgeous name but [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f] seems more like a “real” name. My mum sometimes gets called [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] or [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] as nicknames (neither which she likes).
Your husband has a limited range. [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] is nice if you don 't mind popular names. I’m not a fan of [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f] but I love [name_f]Elise[/name_f].
It’s a nice name, although I prefer [name_f]Elspeth[/name_f].
Is there a reason your husband is set on those three names? Has he simply not found another name he likes? Maybe take a look at nymbler, it might help you out.
I really like [name_f]Elsbeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elspeth[/name_f]. In fact, I prefer it to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. To me, it seems softer and warmer.
