It frustrates me when someone’s like “Don’t name your kid (generic, reasonable name) unless you want to subject them to a LIFETIME OF TEASING!!!”
What does that even mean? If I name my kid Violet, I’m not being cruel simply because there’s some people out there who might call her “violent.” Or if I name my kid Margot, the likeness to “maggot” for some is not enough to kill its beauty. Alice will not be condemned to live out her days as “A lice.”
I think those who wage these criticisms, while well-intentioned, often fail to recognize the possible faults in their own favorite names. Every name can be ridiculed. Desperately warning people against choosing reasonable names is annoying. Feel free to bring up a valid issue with a name, but if the name is a well-established name, don’t annihilate its very presence.
