Sardinian names need more love.

Letā€™s give them a hand for preserving the Vulgar Latin masculine ending u, unlike others which changed it to o or dropped it entirely (looking at you, French). Also for being the only Romance language to maintain hard c in front of i and e.

Here are some Sardinian names:
Tiadora (Theodora)
Arrita (Rita)
Biata (Beatrice)
Boicu (nn for Rafael)
Callina (Caterina/Catherine)
Gilla (Cecilia)
[name_f]Iliana[/name_f] (Juliana)
IstĆØvene (Steven)
Micali (Michael)

Thank you for posting some of these. I tried to look up a couple of them, but they either didnā€™t come up or came up as a surname. I wish they were much more accessible so people know they are names.

Actually, Iā€™m not sure about other countries, but I often donā€™t find names that arenā€™t English when I run searches online for them unless I specify a country that it may come from (how would I know when I donā€™t know the name) or trick my internet search into believing Iā€™m from somewhere else altogether to get different results, and even that is hit and miss.

Really dislike Felicity, Grace, Hope, Rose, Faith, [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and every name that ends with -leigh tbhā€¦

I got these from BehindtheName.

Itā€™s hard to find Sardinian sources in particular as mostly the elderly speak it and there is no standardised form. The orthography is often based on that of standard Italian. Sardinian is considered the closest Romance language to Latin.

Wow, I love Callina and [name_f]Iliana[/name_f]

Thank you. Iā€™ll have to take a look. Itā€™s a great resource (so long as you can ignore the inane comments), but I never thought of looking up names by language.

I know there are several names that were passed through my family where the language isnā€™t spoken anymore. Those are harder to find. I might find them on there.

I donā€™t like these either

This I disagree with

You donā€™t like Felicity either :exploding_head::face_with_hand_over_mouth:?!

I find the ā€œunfortunateā€ meaning of [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] quirky and charming. Maybe itā€™s because we had to read The [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] of [name_u]Red[/name_u] Chief in sixth grade (which isā€¦ problematic, but still a fun read). It makes me think of 1800s fraudsters rather than hostage situations.

Itā€™s Felicity and Hazel for me. Itā€™s not even the sound but I just really donā€™t like the look of Hazel for some reason.
Hope and Faith donā€™t appeal to me either, neither does Fay/Faye/Fae. I can see the appeal of Harriet but it looks unbalanced to me, I want it to be either Harriett or Hariette, but they look pretty off.

Claude, we canā€™t be friends anymore. Iā€™m demoting you to ā€œClaudiaā€ status.

I love the name Ransom, honestly.
