[name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_u]Kit[/name_u] are both masculine

[name_u]Rory[/name_u] is definitely masculine

Rory is unisex but leans masculine, and Kit is solidly unisex, as it is a diminutive of both Christopher and Katherine, originally.

I’ve softened my stance on Russian diminutives as first names, but I can’t get over the very cute ones like [name_f]Anechka[/name_f] and Ninochka. I feel like if a name would never be used on the birth certificate in its culture of origin, it’s also a strange choice outside of that culture, at least to me.

I see you, which is my struggle with [name_f]Lidochka[/name_f] :sob:

“reynie” and “hazie” (the sounds, not the spellings) are much nicer than Rain/Reign and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f].

Speaking of [name_m]Cohen[/name_m], I remember an online friend of mine told me a story about how she met a Mother with a son named [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m].

(To quote what the lady said since I’m not sure how to use Namberrys quotes)

Today while at work I came across a woman who had an elementary aged boy with her. I asked him what his name was and he said [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m]. I must have looked a tad stunned because the mom interjected saying that “well I’m not religious so we don’t have that association with the devil here, I just liked how it sounded!” Giving a slight eye roll. I smiled but needed to share to see how other people felt about it.

In my opinion at least, at the end of the day not everybody is going to be satisfied with your naming choices, so you might as well just do what you want. If you know a name is likely going to cause your child problems, especially in it’s cultural image, or maybe controversy from a certain group of people, even if the next person doesn’t view the way you do, it’s probably best if you listen to other people’s impressions and really think if you should be using this name or not.

I’m always torn about this. A name like Sasha, for example, is well established as a given name outside of Russia, but would never be used like that in Russia. So if Sasha is usable when you look at it like that, then why not Pasha or Petya? I do however draw the line at “the second step” in diminutives. To stick with Aleksander: Sasha is alright, but not Sashenka. Petya is usable, but maybe not Petrushka (even though it breaks my heart). And while Pasha is adorable, maybe Pashenka is too much.

May>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Mae. That is all.

Real talk, I think we emphasize FN-MN flow a LOT, when in real life it’s… not that important. I know the middle names of like 10% of the people I talk to regularly, and I think it’s much more important to like both the first and middle.

Couldn’t agree more. I think FN-LN flow is WAY more important.

It really depends on whether you plan on using your child’s middle name or not. Most don’t, but some people use their full names a good portion of the time.
Personally, I like to make sure that the FN-MN, FN-LN, and FN-MN-LN flow are all good.

[name_f]Addie[/name_f] as a nn is just better than [name_f]Addy[/name_f]. And that’s all, folks. :v:

Agree, but I don’t like either of them. (or Maddie)

Agreed. I think I got lucky with how a lot of my fn-mn and fn-mn-mn combos sound together, but all of the names have significant meaning to me. I think that’s what makes it so difficult to choose a single mn or which name has a greater degree of significance than another.

me neither! but I love Felix!

[name_u]Indy[/name_u] > [name_u]Indie[/name_u]

I don’t know why, it just is

Petrushka is definitely unusable! I don’t know if you know but it means parsley (or at least, this pronunciation if not the spelling) in Polish

I just can’t see [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] on a little girl. Like… that’s the name of my grandmother’s uncle.
