[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] should be spelled Tommis
The spelling has always annoyed me! I understand it comes from Greek but it looks like we should be pronouncing it âthough massâ. I propose a change!
boy do i have some news for you about how thomas is pronounced in greek hahaha
A lot of my fave names for girls end in ith.
[name_f]Aerith[/name_f] (in my top combo), Judith/Julith, [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and Ardith/Aldith.
I donât know why Iâm drawn to it.
me too! i love names that end in -ith and -th. theyâre so pretty!
I really like -th and -ith names too! I have [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_f]Ardith[/name_f], Talaith, and Ailith on my list. Iâve always been a bit disappointed that [name_f]Orlaith[/name_f] isnât Or-layth, because that would be so gorgeous (not that [name_f]Orla[/name_f] isnât too).
In most languages it is, or at least much closer to this than to âtommisâ. Itâs just in [name_f]English[/name_f] that itâs pronounced differently. So whoâs the problem here?
I forgot about [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I love her too.
There are perfectly formal girl names that have fewer than five letters.
Ok, that was snarky. But I am annoyed at this trend of people flailing around and desperately asking for suggestions of a more formal name for the horribly childish and unserious nickname they picked out⌠and then the nickname in question is something like [name_f]Ann[/name_f]. I promise that you can just name the baby [name_f]Ann[/name_f]. She doesnât need a âmore formalâ legal name like [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f], [name_f]Anneliese[/name_f], or [name_f]Annette[/name_f]. Those arenât more formal, just longer.
kind of unnecessary rant
Like, I would get this if the nickname they asked about was something obviously nicknamey like CC or [name_f]Bea[/name_f], or even if the nickname was vaguely gendered, like [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. But when people do this with established stand-alone names like [name_f]Ann[/name_f], [name_f]Eve[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_u]Rose[/name_u], and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], it starts to get silly.
Also, this isnât about people who liked the name [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] in the first place and thought [name_f]Ann[/name_f] would be a cute nickname. I mean the ones that seemingly wring their hands about how much they love the nickname [name_f]Ann[/name_f], but the baby will never get taken seriosly with a nickname name.
I kind of get this.
If I find a name that I like as a nickname, Iâll sometimes try and find a full name. This happened with a sibset who had matchy (and stretchy) nicknames. I ended up thinking of the nicknames first but managed to find full names easily.
I donât believe that any name is formal. They can be posher and more elaborate, but what are the chances that [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] will be forced to change her birth name to something like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]. (This did happen to a [name_u]Coco[/name_u] but it was a joke chosen name used by a man who joined the army. He was forced to change it back).
More of a confession than a hot take, but it fits better here than in name rants!
I cannot remember or figure out how to say [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] for the life of me. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time sheâs mentioned around the forums I look up the pronunciation and will practice saying it aloud and reading it in my mind, but it just never sticks! Like I genuinely just looked up how to say it not even five minutes ago, and I already forget. Boo-lah, byoo-lah, beau-lah, bee-ooh-lahâŚI donât know! How is it possible I can never figure it out!
Not quite the same but I have a similar problem with [name_f]Nimue[/name_f], which is always nim-yoo in my head even if I know the correct pronunciation (and honestly, I prefer that to nim-way).
[name_f]Beulah[/name_f] Iâd make myself remember with âBeautiful Beulahâ (though perhaps thatâs not quite how I feel about the name )
i couldnt figure it out at first either! but i like to think of it as how it looks BE - U - LAH, so basically just say it all together kinda quick! be-you-lah such a pretty vintage name.
Iâd say [name_f]Beula[/name_f] like byoo-luh.
[name_f]My[/name_f] hot take of today
I like Cate/Cait, but not so much [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (sheâs shifted over to a more elegant âmotherlyâ image, which isnât unpleasant)
The imagery by sound for any is cute and fluffy (a little cat-ish, and a little cake-y because they rhyme), but the imagery by look is more prettier with [name_f]Cate[/name_f] (cat-ish also), and [name_f]Cait[/name_f] is somewhat cool (if itâs even real).
I think Rinnie would be such a cute nn for [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] but Iâm starting to wonder if it means anything.
I think that repeating initials for siblings are super cute and are too overhated on Nameberry (I do see it a lot in real life though lol!). [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]? [name_f]Ruthie[/name_f] and [name_u]Rose[/name_u]? [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Dot[/name_f]? Câmon, they make the cutest sisters!
I do recognise and appreciate that repeating letters does make it difficult to refer people by initials, though - which is something I do a lot in writing
I have two children (out of six) with repeating initials, [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] and [name_m]Eshkol[/name_m]. When naming [name_m]Eshkol[/name_m] it crossed my mind, but to be honest I didnât give it much thought and it doesnât bother me. We hardly ever use their initials, and I canât imagine how it could cause problems in the future. [name_m]Even[/name_m] with letters, theyâre rarely addressed to a person with just their initials. And who sends letters anymore by the time theyâre adults? And as for labeling things for school etc, I just use their first name. The chances theyâll ever end up with another [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] or [name_m]Eshkol[/name_m] in the same classroom are very slim
I didnât even notice the repeating initials until now, RĂł! Goes to show how it doesnât really matter irl
I love this name but I never know how to spell it!
I know someone who spells it [name_m]Neev[/name_m] and thatâs never sat right with me haha
